Steps is Twitter taking to improve security -- joining us live for is a -- -- dot com tech reporter Samantha Murphy in New York Samantha thanks for joining -- hi how are you.
Good good -- last week you -- here we were talking about how they're a lot more ads are ways to buy things and click on things on on Twitter and Gordon has always been it's it's always been a -- for that but it seems like that's been in improving and has been more of those are popping up and a lot of our feeds coupled with that -- security questions right.
-- gas I mean anything that's popular online and going to be a hot -- for cyber criminals whether it can -- sort FaceBook -- Twitter.
They're gonna wanna go where the -- are so there's lots of different things that are happening on Twitter there's lots of Phishing scams which go after their passwords.
And your user information as well but there's also hacking groups that they call themselves -- to -- And -- they use the platform to kind of amplify the message or statement -- -- one week and even seeing a lot of that happening recently as well.
Yet they've -- made to mean not just those of us whoever own counsel were worried about our credit card information or whatever being taken but Burger King jeeps and big name corporations have been hit.
Common that does have some pretty big implications yes definitely a few weeks ago Burger King -- packed liking -- -- A few days later I -- with tax and basically just to give you a quick background on what happens.
And a how activist group anonymous they were behind the Burger King hacking and what they did would be switched the avatar and -- header.
Photo in the back.
And they need it in Q and McDonald's branding and -- they sent about fifty something -- and about seventeen minutes.
And a lot of these messages were between -- and it went all over the Internet a lot of them where some of them -- racial.
You know offenses and stuff like that so.
People were you know I kind of upset that and and realize you know brand through managing big cites.
That you know anybody is at risk here you could have fifteen followers are you could have fifteen million followers.
And people are still logging in the same way with one password and -- -- -- itself there's a lot of security issues around that.
Right -- is this indicative of a greater problem you know we had a guest on earlier this hour talking about cyber security and -- threat being face from Chinese hackers in North Korean hackers.
But you talk about activism is this the group visit India -- -- him of a greater cyber security issue that we're dealing with.
Now -- a massive level -- I mean like he was saying earlier you know we really are at risk for.
Some sort of cyber warfare.
Experts are you talking about I'm talking to business schools and trying to teach people that are going into this -- on how to prevent.
These things from happening but.
I mean if you just look at you know let's take and very simple.
Example let's say you're at an airport and the ticketing system goes down.
At the airport people -- for their planes the flight is able to lead the gate and then the flights in the Aaron evil coming in an -- rerouted to another airport.
So different things so small like -- have.
Much bigger -- -- and then also.
You know electricity in the middle of winter could go out or -- trains could even be derailed there's a lot of you know our systems a lot of our infrastructure haven't been changed in thirty years.
And these hackers and a lot of them moonlight or at least have to -- you know our IT specialist that.
Do these things on the moonlight.
You know on the side but you know and it's very powerful these platforms but when taken advantage of there are certainly some negative and terrible things that happened from -- as well.
-- to become a quick chat before -- -- is isn't anoint anyone listening says I'm not a techie or hacker but I do know.
That whatever me or anyone else puts on the net is retrievable -- -- Stevie says.
Adamant put on YouTube and I can't get off Twitter it shows up with my pictures and a couple of things that you were talking about some things that they're dealing.
So -- yes like I mentioned.
You know you could be you could just be an average user are you can be and need your branding yourself confronted with with these things and I think that.
People are concerned I don't think it's you know anyone should panic but I do think that.
They're really quick simple -- he should be used to have passwords that are lengthy ten character -- numbers symbols letters.
I mean if you are letting third parties.
Next with your apps on Twitter you should go back afterwards and take that out because they save information and so there's lots of little steps you can do to be -- again.
But in the meantime sites like Twitter me -- stepped up their security so we can don't want to care -- -- -- as well.
Highsmith Murphy tech reporter masimo dot com to view -- -- Murphy Samantha.
