That's over North Korea is now officially threatening to -- you could Washington DC.
And in response the United States is fully capable of defending itself against any North Korean missile attack.
That promise from both the State Department and the White House just hours after this threat from the north Koreans to launch a preemptive nuclear strike.
The North Korean threat in response to tough punishment for the United Nations some of which are aimed at taking away luxuries that the country's leader enjoy it while their citizens store.
Jonathan -- is covering this from the United Nations tonight -- Jonathan if this is an empty threat or not.
No chance that it's not an empty threat we have seen of course that tough.
North Korea has a missile which could in theory reached -- United States all -- of the United States they tested such a missile.
Back in December they also carried out an underground nuclear test.
Earlier this year are of course now what they haven't been able to do yet is put those two.
-- of the technology together another -- they have not been able to -- -- nuclear warhead.
Enough to put it on top all of a long range missile that is why officials across the administration -- dismissing the threat.
But now listen.
The United States is fully capable.
Of defending against a DP RK ballistic missile attack the United States is fully capable of defending against.
Any North Korean ballistic missile attack.
Now what them.
Great -- -- right -- is that there is a measure of instability -- it within North Korea with Kim Jong-Il and Kim the younger.
Trying to prove himself and the military commanders trying to flex that power some experts worry.
That that could lead to an attack not against the United States directly but against one of our allies Japan or South Korea -- So what did the United Nations do exactly today that it's supposed to help prevent all of us.
Well they introduced a series of measures in this Security Council resolution which are designed essentially.
To stop North Korea importing all crucially exporting.
Nuclear technologies and stop the flow of cash that goes along -- those kind of exchanges of technology.
According to the US ambassador to the UN's Susan Rice.
These off some of the strongest punishments the Security Council has ever put together -- -- Taken together these sanctions will bite.
And bite hard.
They increase North Korea's isolation.
And raise the cost to North Korea's leaders.
-- defying the international community.
Now importantly here China has not just signed on to this resolution but in fact.
Dropped did it.
But -- that woods will be judged to mauled by their actions and that is something that US officials will be watching very closely whether the Chinese live up to this resolution shots.
-- any thing from the de facto ambassador to North Korea Dennis Rodman.
Well apparently -- -- diplomacy may well continue Dennis Rodman wants to go back.
To meet again with his BFF -- the younger.
I'd suggest that this time he might want to take a long Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with him.
He always seemed more successful when he had those guys alongside -- that is -- -- Jonathan Hunt at the UN tonight.
