It's.
-- -- weeks unsafe for the president you first have a setback on the sequestered then a dramatic filibuster forcing a clarification on killer drones or at least attempting tale.
I welcome to -- you -- happening now I'm generally.
I'm John Scott for that thanks for joining us today.
On the surface it appears the president is changing course trying to win over the opposition by doing something.
Very different from what he's done up till now like sharing lunch with the Republican chairman of the House Budget Committee Paul Ryan.
And dinner with Republican senators the night before.
Politico saying Republicans are forcing the president's hand quote.
Obama is doing things he's never done like dine out this week with a dozen Republican senators at a meal in which they talked fiscal issues.
And to re engage with lawmakers after almost two years of campaigning against them.
House speaker John Boehner calling that a dinner diplomacy -- hopeful sign saying quote.
This week we've gone 180 after being in office now for four years he's actually going to sit down and talk to members.
Meanwhile senator Rand Paul is declaring victory after his filibuster forced the drone issue on -- the front burner.
The administration now stating the president does not claim power to kill Americans on US soil using drones.
Here is politicos -- take on that episode.
The flurry of attention to the issued -- we caught the Obama White House by surprise the White House appears to have misjudged the downside of -- stances on transparency.
And how it could -- existing legal principles to justify the program.
Complicated by political miscalculations fumbles by the attorney general and growing concern among some segments of the public.
Talk about it all -- Joseph Trippi was Howard dean's campaign manager he is also a Fox News contributor so let's start with this sequestered did the president overplay his hand Joseph.
No I look I think the president's dealing now with the new reality we're not in the campaign season and I think what's happening is.
The -- case he I think he's realize he can't move Republican votes in the house from the outside most of these members are in safe district safe Republican districts.
It's not -- -- be by brow beating them into and -- and we've got sitting down and working with them and that's the early strategy worked for his reelection.
And actually you know worked up until now but it doesn't look like it'll work much further than that -- that's why I think he's changed change tactic.
Well he seems to operate as though he got his sweeping electoral mandate he didn't act and in the Electoral College maybe you could say he did but he basically got 51% of the vote I mean it was still pretty close election.
Well he's so lucky it's only the second I -- literally two or three presidents have gotten over 51%.
Both their elections he was one of them I think the other was FDR and I think Reagan so -- I mean it's not that it's it.
It's it when you're pushing off Republicans it helped it helped bring independents to him now the problem is as we go into the 2014.
Election.
Each of these members of congress are -- relatively very safe district so the more you push against a Republican.
The more that Republican doesn't have to fear -- primary challenge I mean if it's coming from the president.
He then that Republican is solid fighting the president more sought by fighting on the working with a so I think the president realized the only way to get anything done now.
It's -- change strategies and try to sit down and and win it on the inside not fight from the outside.
Question I guess is is it too late for the president to change -- -- here's what the speaker of the house said John Boehner says.
I'm hopeful that something will come out of this referring to these meetings and lunches and dinners with the president.
But if the president continues to insist on tax hikes I don't think we're going to get very far.
If the president doesn't believe that we have a spending problem I don't know if we're going to get very far but I'm optimistic.
Despite all the sequester cuts and everything the budget the federal government is still going to spend more money this year than it spent last year -- Know that that's right John but I think what I think -- you when you read data but let's point out is that.
That that that this could be 88 between a rock and a hard place for these Republicans because if if the president now looks like hey I'm sitting down we're having dinner we're talking.
And then they vote -- Then we sit down and we talk some more we have dinner and they oppose them on something else.
It could set them up in 2014.
For if you want to get something done you've got to change congress I mean he's not on the ballot in 2014.
So they're there could be a trap here Republicans don't handle.
The handle this you know if they -- with sort of a lead foot I think -- could be a problem.
All right but you know on the on the American people don't seem to much like the way to sequester thing has been going so far that is some of the choices that have been made about things to cut.
It's going to be interesting to see out all shakes out Joseph Trippi thanks for joining us.
