If the president continues to insist on tax hikes are the greater -- for.
The president doesn't believe the we have a spending problem.
I don't know we're gonna get -- -- four.
And -- sets a new standard for managed expectations.
And the definition of optimism.
I was as speaker John Boehner talking to reporters yesterday and this is power play and high -- tireless -- are all welcome Internet -- studio three.
In the mighty Washington DC bureau of the Fox News Channel.
And the president is reaching out.
He's reaching out to not just senate Republicans and moderate Republicans like Lindsey Graham and John McCain but he's going to submit himself.
To speak with his greatest adversaries which are the Republican conservative Republican members of the house next week.
So is this for real is this live or is this memorex is the president really serious about doing a deal with conservatives in the house or is he buying time.
For the next round of scorched earth budget -- we will talk about that we will at a five and elucidate.
We will also talk about this.
It's kind of a big deal ray and Paul had a big week doing that.
But some in the Republican including mr.
Graham and McCain do not think it is too groovy.
Can the Republicans harness the energy of the libertarian right.
You know who knows Joseph -- because he knows how to motivate mobilize and do stuff with politics on the Internet especially.
So they'll be here to talk with us about that and we will talk about.
The details we've nitty gritty details of the president of the spending fight.
Including closing the White House paying somebody to walk the president's dog and things like that have come under closer scrutiny.
In the sequestration follies we will do all of that you'll enjoy all of that.
And the enjoyment that it left -- to begin at once let us not to let any longer and our enjoyment and say hi to Josh cross car.
-- that's not my best ever reading of your last name but it's okay.
Executive editor of National Journal hotline.
Which is of course as you know for political junkies -- -- probably one of -- watching this you you depend upon it and we depend on your good counsel Jack -- thanks for having Chris OK so.
The president says.
The last Republican that Barack Obama talked to.
Before this week was Mitt Romney two take his concession call in November.
But this week he's all about he's taken -- -- for lamb chops and he is gonna.
Meet with house Republicans next week.
Does it look like it's the real thing or is -- box -- here.
-- box checking Chris but it's also a response to the political situation that the president finds himself.
I mean if you remember during the campaign he said that once he won reelection he would break the fever of of of house Republicans right instead what we're seeing is that after the -- politics of the sequestered took place Republicans came out with a pretty.
Significant victory and it's Obama -- The insistence on doing things his way not negotiating with Republicans.
And that's fever has been broken if you will and -- the reason he's reaching out to certain senators.
And also Paul Ryan -- budget is because he wants to get something done his legacy depends on finding some kind of common ground.
These long term budget fights and keep mobility that unless he starts to build some -- will.
The other side so -- made simple and that the president needs the government is gonna need to borrow about a trillion and a half dollars.
Over the next most of that money there will borrow from the Federal Reserve.
It's complicated don't ask -- questions but they're gonna need to borrow about a train and a half dollars between now in the next election.
Which is the next time that you could get past.
Deadlock in Washington DC eight.
So keep the question is does he want to take it.
Bite bite bite bite bite as Democrats originally seem to want to do which was jump from cliff to -- and keep pushing the Republicans back at every turn.
Or does he want to do bigger deal the general rule of thumb that we've seen -- so far is that whichever side is losing on a particular argument suddenly finds new -- interest in a big deal right.
That's the rule of politics and he was backing away from -- gave up on the on the notion of -- big deal after the 2011 budget talks with John Boehner fell apart.
Now they really want to go back to that people they they they believe that there leverage that they had after the election is starting to dissipate.
And they want to get some moment -- now after 2013.
The chances of getting some kind of be.
Entitlement reform package tax reform package her -- much much much slower so this is his moment he's realizing that he doesn't have quite political muscle he did after the election.
And now he's trying to come back to the bargaining table -- -- parts -- our program.
-- the president has pretty hideous choice to make in the next few weeks because the continuing resolution that funds the government in the absence of -- budget.
It doesn't -- -- but it's authorizing spending it's again it's complicated don't ask a lot of questions.
But the continuing resolution that is needed to keep the government functioning.
Is in three weeks.
If the president wants to get the upper hand or make any changes to what the house Republicans have got to do.
He needs to bring the pain he needs Americans to feel like the sequestration is bad news or he's not going to be able to change it right.
That's true though.
Recently it looks like she's been trying to postpone.
Picking a fight on on this so called continuing resolution to make sure the government is funded properly it seems like the White House actually isn't that far apart from the bill house Republicans passed a bill funding the government and it seems that the -- -- is not for the moment going to pick a fight even though.
The house bill became the levels of funding for this -- sequestration.
And -- a little more flexibility is a little more money to the Defense Department.
Which took a big hit with the -- with a sequester but it is Obama the fact that he's not -- give -- fight over what looked like a big winning issue just a month ago shows how all that's changed.
So Liberal Democrats were very happy after the election when a new boulder Obama 2.0 step dad.
And said -- taking -- -- the -- -- take the -- he had hit a very bold inaugural address.
He went pretty hard after Republicans in his state of the union.
And took this -- And liberals who felt that he'd gotten role.
Liberals were strongly felt president and gotten ruled in his first term and that had been too accommodating to Republicans on these fiscal deals.
Are they gonna be patient with him if he comes back and says it's time to indulge these -- republic.
I doubt there's going to be a whole lot of patients but for the big tactical mistake.
The White House made was picking a fight on the one issue were Republicans polls are Republicans.
To have a relative that spending fights -- -- mom and dad it did it's pretty significant it's always been that way down and in the White House thought that you look at polls say -- you.
The mix of tax increases and spending cuts and of course they -- -- -- about -- the general triple what it actually comes of the political arguments Republicans generally have a better.
Edge when it comes that the issues of spending -- and so on so Obama -- to -- -- ships and that's spending debt sequester basket.
It's got to the other two big pet initiatives immigration.
And gun control that are flailing around in congress right now.
He's put the easily lost hello a lot of political capital and now the legacy the second term big initiatives that are there hanging around in congress are necessarily gonna -- -- momentum.
So on the Internet you have crafted an excellent she's very Smart piece about.
The way that the president's strategy to win back the House of Representatives which by the way.
Would be eight epic historic victory for its second term president mid term elections to slipped seventeen seats in the house his way when normally -- president's -- But how that there's an interplay between his strategy in the house.
In the senate where Democrats have -- ten or twelve seeds that they're gonna need to defend.
The senate passed this is so much different in the house in that Obama needs to Democrats rather need to.
Hold seats in the deep south -- seats in Alaska is a conservative states that are.
Like you -- Obama's agenda they're gonna need it.
Declared itself independent from from the president and from his from his pet issues so when Obama is gonna get more -- try to play a leading role help take back how's he may unwittingly -- he -- -- He may have -- publicly he may unwittingly helped.
-- Republican challengers in the senate that are running in very red states very conservative.
And the country.
Internet after you've read every pixel.
And watched every video and done everything that you can't hear I would encourage you after all of that two of the National Journal and -- peace and making a play for the house President Obama could lose the -- -- it's well written it's fair minded and it is the patriots got -- thank you thanks for us today Internet we're gonna take a quick break.
Republicans get young voters they stink with young voters I mean that.
I mean real bad like the president got 60% of the youth vote voters under thirty that's to be about a fifth of the electorate.
They can't go on like that they can't keep up that way so how they get it could libertarian -- and give them away and and will traditional Republicans tolerate.
This raucous behavior by Rand Paul and company who explore that question with Joseph -- when we come back.
So stick around.
But if mr.
Paul wants to be taken seriously.
He needs to do more than -- political stunts that fire up impressionable libertarian kids in their college dorms.
He needs to know what he's talking about.
And that was John McCain Republican senator from Arizona on the senate floor yesterday.
Quoting a wall street journal editorial attacking.
Senator Rand Paul Republican from Kentucky who had the best week of anybody in politics this week as he -- the floor for a twelve hour filibuster of the president's policies as it relates to killing Americans.
And -- prompt president in the -- had promised that he wouldn't he promises that he won't do it unless somebody is an enemy combatant.
This is power play.
So John McCain sounded a bit like parent who would come home to find a wild party going on in his house in his absence and he said turn that racket down.
Everybody get back in your seats in behave.
But the Republicans had a good week thanks to -- all in addition to the president having a little trouble selling as sequestration stuff that a good week because of landfall.
-- Republicans -- too great a youthful.
Libertarian movement into a party that.
Is no longer useful.
By and large and generally has gone away from libertarian principles in the last year or so.
Now Joseph Trippi is a Democrat there's no question he wears -- blue -- so you know.
Joseph Trippi is a Democrat he is also -- Fox News contributor he's a democratic strategist but Joseph was the perfect person to talk about the subject because.
-- used -- Internet.
To help revolutionize the Democratic Party in the 2004 election with Howard Dean tapping into some of the very same sentiment.
That -- and -- was tapping into yesterday and this week as he was out talking about the president on grounds -- -- -- -- the picture.
Could be previous we'll see if that's true.
I agree but I agree with him and -- -- actually there's been a time when I -- but.
John McCain would have.
-- with him too I mean when you back in the maverick -- -- -- -- time well now -- duty and Lindsey -- do like to kill Islamist -- CIA are into that and they're not -- anything that makes it in -- harder to kill islamists were so specific and so even if the Republicans credit them on national security stuff.
As -- report this was an about us well you know it.
It's well -- -- killing Americans.
It's on American soil that it IV and Radio One -- -- -- just want the president to say I promise unless you are an enemy combatant.
Unless you are like fighting Jihad.
We do not think that we have the authority to kill you.
And he did everything that an interest at all it -- ours and -- -- and and risking the trading in its editorial -- to prevent that to get that out of them.
That's the debt and two I think he demonstrate would've put real filibuster supposed to do.
You know whether we yeah I mean it was classic and it was classic and I think.
-- hit me hit a lot of any a lot of young people across the board with them on this thing I mean it wasn't.
You know conservatives was -- Tea Party young people just them it was -- or libertarian young people is.
There's a lot is there any -- a lot of people but a lot of them just plain old Americans don't we're party and asleep who.
Think he was making a point that needed to be made -- no one else even the Democrats.
I mean it's.
We'll read the -- on Dick Durbin says -- power plants there which -- if you -- follow me at cease fire while the look on Dick Durbin space.
And they had to close and Dick Durbin.
He was hit once like once upon a time like he was like an insurgent hip guy like all that stuff.
And the look on his face as Rand Paul from Kentucky and the big cheers.
And it it it had like it had this like animal house moment where Dick Durbin was forced to be -- -- warmer he did not did not seem to like the moment now everybody just be -- the be -- celebrating out -- -- exactly itself that's a lot of.
A lot of people both in both parties were about this but I think they -- -- I think.
Ray and Paul scored scored for the GOP you know now the interesting thing about this is it -- it did.
Sort of help paint Obama as the hawk.
Yeah as the guys tougher -- noted no doubt no doubt you know which is familiar place for Democrat -- and they're not -- they're not entirely comfortable with it now look at your career has been marked by this.
You have been part of several insurgencies in your Hugh.
You look you you you like that role you like to be the guy -- the establishment usually wins just might establishment usually wins that look.
-- as of Republican senate from making 76 to 1980 establishment may win the battle but then lose the war in the longer term and that was the case for you Howard -- didn't get the nomination in 2004 but there would have been no Obama victory you know -- right guys hadn't placed at risk but what happens is the establishment.
Stops the insurgency but didn't swallows elements of -- in someone -- And starts to moved in insurgency can really move apart.
You know they did the Republicans seem to intent the Republicans do much better does -- lack of absorbing this insurgency in 2010.
Than they did in India and -- when he -- exactly means that you can.
2012 they were trying to -- it -- just didn't work out.
You know -- the dean campaign is against the war.
In Iraq in Iraq -- -- four -- with four years later.
Being for the -- the war.
Hurts Hillary Clinton being opposed to it are saying he was about the -- Tutsis in officiating calculation based on what she saw happen in 2000 that's establishment not.
Not figuring out what's going on Obama.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- It it kind of upsets the establishment at first but when it starts to succeed.
The establishment learns from it takes those elements and that's a better strategy.
Than just trying to kill the team -- the Tea Party or kill elements of the party doesn't work through.
Asthma eczema Debra -- Nicol says that she follows me on Twitter and therefore gets to talk to me on Twitter.
-- residences as we should have a big tent -- I assume referring to Republicans McCain and grammar wrong.
They should be mentors not for much of it it's great article -- now I didn't just read that because she's a great our usual.
Course -- of course -- forced out remembering self serving in Washington DC but -- that it did the truth is.
Mitch McConnell and other more moderate -- problems would like Marco Rubio.
Played it better which was just today.
Well maybe you're overstating the case ran but I think it's super let's sort of a good review -- and I'm glad you got to go out there and do we hope you had fun.
As opposed to the rating or operating and that strikes me is better politics because instead of making yourself look.
As different Nichols as much in play you look like you're kind of hit even if you're a little bit -- -- about it.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Have sticking to principle going in -- -- holding out and look at witty guys that one of the few times he would admit is that the Republican senator.
Has gotten them the administration today.
To restate its position -- -- in -- keep you -- -- is that you know sort of -- a little bit in terms of being more open about what they're what they really -- -- and yeah I mean those.
He did something that a lot of actually that could be with upset some of them is that.
Got something now the Obama administration to know the rest of them.
Right exact hold off so that they didn't get back from the McCain and Graham to get a really nice dinner and the president paid for it looked like it supertanker.
Good and that could've been it.
This very -- I mean look you know he's the price of a dinner at the Jefferson and I would be willing to do a lot like I've got to yell at -- and allies most of it to have advised presidents -- front -- a strange place exactly right now so here's a question.
Rand Paul gonna run for president there is that there is now seemingly no question that he will pick up his father's mantle.
It carried forward into the Republican primary process and what did you see that.
This -- going to be really I know I love it.
Wait wait wait wait wait wait a minute wait a minute now you may say that.
But certainly he's demonstrated that he can have a discussion that -- appeals to -- outfit that fifth of the electorate those younger voters that are with Obama doesn't mean.
No it does it's unfortunate he's got to be more appealing to ambush somebody Gingrich really put through with the eventual Republican nominee -- -- -- -- if it signed him right we'll have killed him.
To get the nomination in their -- I mean this is what that the problem is I really believe the Republican Party asked is about to go through -- what Democrats did in 1980s.
Yeah where we just.
The left -- are you right in the business Democrats are you beat the living daylights out of intelligent one of the sides wine right and 92 we finally now.
At third way in the wilderness right we actually get it the guy Bill Clinton who can who can win but you -- you know that's not gonna happen -- -- I've talked about this before so much of it comes down to personnel policy right.
And if we frame this is a policy fight it it often gets and his policy fight.
But you gotta have the right man for the moment you have to have a right you have to have somebody to his skill set.
That can do it rubio looks like he is pretty skillful.
But perhaps not doesn't have the depth that Rand Paul demonstrated this week maybe -- bound up maybe Rand Paul we'll find a way to be a little liver.
When the moment calls right but this really comes down to personnel right.
Comes another person although.
-- comes down to.
There's there's so there there are usually two or three slot some of these primary fights you're gonna have -- establishment.
Slot and then there's going to be.
In -- -- and maybe it's libertarians but there's you know that end.
So you're right you know people are vying for we're we are where are -- on the racetrack so to speak and now.
These have got to get out there to fight it out in the end I think the fight is going to be and he's you -- yet Donny and so far every time -- here eight parties had one of those -- lose they lose adolescents helps them.
Long term really gives reenergize the party but they tend to lose that that's like that's.
Well -- proselytize.
And just think that's I'm still relatively young man I could live Syria if you live to say this -- of the Republican Party work through this and see -- but it'll be Moses is here with the Democrats -- post Obama.
Is he hasn't built a bench and Hillary Clinton doesn't they're -- -- coast.
Okay -- we thank you very much for making -- for today and you watch him on the Fox News Channel just in about.
Fourteen minutes or something he'll be there will be great -- enjoy it that -- were there extra.
OK and that we're gonna take a quick break but when we come back we'll ask this question.
Get small on spending we certainly -- small increments of spending.
People get upset because they find out all that is buried in federal spending.
So what does this portend for the president's fight to try to get Republicans to relent.
On their refusal to raise taxes very rich people we will discuss that when we come back.
It's just different.
And I believe ultimately the White House is has really who's going too far they're gonna have to reverse this because they know they made a mistake on this I believe.
That was John -- key is a senator from the great state of Wyoming he's a Republican and he was on the record with Greta Van Susteren -- -- talking about the decision.
By the Obama administration.
To close the White House to tourists just in time for all the kiddies to come to town on spring break with mom and dad.
And -- and wonder at American representative government.
This is power -- welcome back now.
The fight over small nuggets of spending -- the federal government.
Usually is consigned to -- books and angry statements issued by Republican congressman about mechanical squirrels and things like that but since the president has tried to narrow -- -- to talk about -- sequestration cuts.
Will affect individuals.
Those small -- 70000 dollars here 100000 dollars there million dollars there.
Rounding errors in the federal government usually have become very important how does this affect the discussion you know who knows Richard Fowler knows he is of course the host of the Richard -- it shows that not true that is true that he is a man of the left in good standing and he is complying with no -- Friday that he did this year there are ties have been sequestered.
Run -- jeans I has not been sequestered in a memo is in the 1% of tie wearing people and -- -- partner at center -- budget strategies the other budget.
In former spokeswoman for the speaker of the house and the senate Republicans OK guys welcome welcome.
We're running short on time but Richard I want to start with you.
Does the president have a problem when it comes to making small cuts when Republicans like Tom Coburn can come out and say.
You waste money on incredible.
Numbers of things federal government is -- is gushing money all over the place and you can't afford.
To let kids -- the White House come out.
Putting the broader discussion Chris is a good discussion about what Republicans are gonna do to actually work on solving this question we can talk about the small and you know we want to talking about -- you know couple of considerable amount of money -- through part of the federal budget I think in recent economists say it's a question goes in the fall back to lose.
Almost a half a percentage on GDP growth which is a big deal.
Ron when the president was out before he was saying.
If we cut.
This job if we cut this person your mind's going to be longer than TSA things are going to be -- do these things they say wait a minute what -- you pay your -- -- What the heck is going on here you're that concerned about these things when -- -- why don't you ships and over this is.
They're the result of the fact that the president went out -- cross country campaign that these cuts we're gonna hurt people and no one's felt the pain so they have symbolically show.
People that little kids can't get a White House tour so they had to bring it home and you're using you know very symbolic way which I think it's really back trying to on -- especially when they capitalism -- for -- -- I think -- -- right there's lots of ways that they should be targeting.
Be it a bit -- -- White House tour that's not necessarily the place to.
Go very quickly because we're lately late we're sorry Jonathan Hunt but very quickly Richards.
-- -- tours were -- what's -- -- I think reopened it shortly I think they'll reopen their right.
They're an agreement and they are right and their right to make time for us answering to -- through this guys that we love you for being here OK I'm hello Jonathan Hunt is up next but we have got some rapid fire power points -- -- they come.
Today's -- points.
Or 23 million.
That's the question the first PowerPoint the Dow -- up above 141000 the stock market looks good.
But -- there's a lot of people without jobs without jobs that they don't want or they need more money so how do you have an economy that stinks for so many people but it's so good.
In financial markets.
Well -- -- second PowerPoint.
It's a numbers game.
And the number that you look at depending on what number you look at the economy's doing better it's doing worse there's at that point they can tell you anything you want.
The reason that the stock market is doing better is in part because the Federal Reserve is making it happen.
-- -- -- a lot of dough out there but some people are doing better things are getting better for a lot of folks but here's your third PowerPoint.
-- -- Bono may have something happens right thing to ask is who benefits to who's benefit if you'd like to solve the riddle.
Find out who benefits and you may find out the person who's responsible for making that thing happen.
American struggle about income inequality but remember this about the stock market and this is significant significant the reason that we have such big income inequality in the United States now in CEOs make so much money is because so many middle class people make a lot of money and have retirement funds.
In the stock market with all those that that money floating around these CEOs and top executives at these companies that provide the retirement account for these folks through their investment.
Get really rich so just remember it's just things to think about just -- agitate and now as we like to do every day we wanna leave you with the work from French.
-- gitmo is precisely was invented.
As a way to have a site under which we could receive information over time.
Then the minute he arrives in New York on trial -- against lawyer up.
We're gonna learn nothing and he is a lot to tell us.
