United States and South Korea kicking off joint military drills this morning this despite North Korea's threat to launch a nuclear attack on the United States and to scrap the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War.

It has been quite.

Couple of weeks with news out of North Korea city's military -- come in the face of all that Steve Centanni is live on this for us in Washington.

Says Steve they've made these threats before.

Why should we think that this time it might be different.

Well -- with war games under way on both sides of the border with North Korea saying its ending that sixty year old cease fire.

And of the UN now ratcheting up sanctions.

Tensions are running higher than at any time since 2010.

When Pyongyang attacked a South Korean island.

All this follows a series of missile launches by the north of course.

And more importantly North Korea's third underground nuclear test since 2006.

Which took place on February 12.

And last week the UN Security Council voted unanimously.

To impose tougher sanctions aimed at North Korea's finances.

At the same time the north Koreans are threatening nuclear war on South Korea and the US.

And -- and to talk of course the State Department tells is not helpful at all.

Spokeswoman Victoria new and saying this kind of provocative rhetoric these kinds of actions are just not going to improve conditions for the North Korean people.

They're -- -- end the isolation -- just going to increase tensions and it's extremely regrettable obviously.

Now experts say with the recent missile launches and nuclear test North Korea may now be closer to actually being able to strike the yes Martha the -- what's the nature of these military exercises that we're gonna -- what we expect.

-- huge exercise it was long plan becomes a very crucial time now.

The eleven day drill began today involves 101000 South Korean troops and about 3000 American troops.

And continuing at the same time -- large scale North Korean drills that Seoul says involve the army air force and navy of the north.

US and the international community obviously monitoring all this very very closely -- thank you very much so let's take a look back at.
