Attack killing two American soldiers in Afghanistan an Afghan police officer some imposing.
Like one opened fire inside a police station and -- -- province killing the Americans in three Afghan officers.
The attack comes one day after -- President Karzai there.
And his deadline for US special forces to withdraw from that very same province which is right near Kabul.
The deadly incident comes on the heels an incendiary comments from Karzai during.
His first visit by act by the new Defense Secretary check cable to Afghanistan.
Karzai claims the US is colluding with the Taliban saying quotes.
On the one hand the Taliban are talking with the Americans but on the other hand they carry out a bombing in Kabul.
He goes on to say recent bombings by the Taliban were for the benefit.
-- America saying quote these bombings aims to prolong the presidents.
The American forces.
In Afghanistan.
A good times remember that's when he 2100 class Americans have died since the war began in Afghanistan.
-- -- spent more than half trillion dollars.
On the war.
Seth Jones and former advisor to the general of the US operation forces in Afghanistan he's now our researcher for the Rand Corp.
Access nice hit back with that's.
Thanks -- -- a -- why should our men.
Keep dying in this country men and women.
If this is the behavior.
Of that country's precedent what's going on here.
-- not I I should point out that this is not the first time we've heard statements like this back in April of 2010.
President car -- cars actually said he would join the Taliban if he continued to come under pressure.
From outside governments including the US to reform but the bottom line for the US is that there continues to be a threat.
To the US homeland from a range of militant groups including al-Qaeda on both the Afghan and Pakistan sides of the border I think that's what.
Makes the US sort of suck up these kinds of statements and continue to try to cooperate as much as possible so so -- a little deeper into that why should we tolerate this.
Well we shouldn't tolerate these kinds of actions and I hope that the new secretary of defense made that very clear to the -- to the Afghan president.
That while it's OK to have differences in views to keep those private and these public statements -- on helpful and in fact if they continue.
They will increase the rationale for the US to pull out more forces.
And what's the risk of that.
Well the risk is if you pull out too much I think.
You know again we've been 2009 there was nearly an attack in.
New York City from a and al-Qaeda plot that was based out of Pakistan.
Two -- ten this time square bomber was trained in Pakistan right along the Afghan Pakistan border so there are still threats to the US coming from this region.
Can't imagine that he's in a few times we actually have a map -- gonna show our viewers.
And our viewers should know the name of one city in particular in this map that we're showing you.
The city's called Mirren shocked.
It's in North Waziristan you could see the tribal area it's right along the border between Afghanistan.
And Pakistan and just over the last -- -- per -- is there's been reports -- another drone strike in nearly shot that's.
Where the bad guys are everybody is -- where the bad guys that that Anheuser in marriage shall we know that we know a few areas that there in in this tribal area sat.
How does what Karzai says are what -- does the local government in Afghanistan.
Impact our ability to go get the bad guys where they are -- that tribal region.
Well for the US to continue to try to go after the bad guys in this area they have to have bases.
Right along the border.
And work with the Afghans -- to get at these -- to collect the intelligence necessary to conduct strikes in this area and it looks like in this case.
The US targeted.
Two Arabs and several uzbeks fighters that was -- aspect is interstate because again this is a country that lies north of Afghanistan.
Indicating yet.
Continuing.
Proliferation of Islamic radical groups in this region this is this probably why the US needs to stay here to some degree for the foreseeable future.
Thinking Karzai disrupt that can cars and make it impossible.
-- to go and do that -- is that something that right now we don't need his permission or whatever he says in the ground in cobble.
Isn't as much of a factor.
What he'd have to -- US forces out of bases like Jalalabad.
For the US to.
To to not be able conducting strikes he has.
What we see with Karzai is his bark is usually worse than his bite he makes a lot of inflammatory statements like this.
-- when it comes to action.
He's usually not.
He's using now willing to actually take this step and force US forces and.
That said though we're expecting a -- elections next year rates at that's when the -- -- the elections in Afghanistan are gonna take place who should we expect to take his position or is he vying.
And sound strange way with some of these public statements to stay in power and we're gonna see another you know term the President Karzai.
Well look -- range of options on the table there's one option where.
You actually have somebody else.
Like the president's brother -- -- -- ward off their whole range of individuals that may run for president.
But there's a second option where President Karzai either stays.
On as president -- the constitution.
Or stays on in sort of -- background role the way we saw say with.
Vladimir Putin in Russia like there's a range of options -- a president can.
Actually continue to influence the political process even if he decides not to run and and the.
Missing and watched that process play out as it does -- -- next year and that a good reminder that we're supposed to be.
Withdrawing from Afghanistan and the next it at the end of next year.
After this elections take place so interesting timing for all this at great to have you as always thank you thank thanks Jenna.
