On the Korean Peninsula tensions remain high North Korea's leader Kim Jung on.
Urging his troops be on -- maximum alert.
Telling soldiers stationed near disputed waters quote war can break out right now.
John Bolton former investors United Nations functions contributors are good morning to you.
Maximum alert the rhetoric is its crank it up by the day and he measure.
Well certainly the rhetoric is pretty intense.
I think the odds of -- -- actually happening are remote but you never can tell with the regime that said this irrational in our terms.
-- closed and hard to read is this one is and for the people of South Korean particular you know the suburbs of sold the capital go right up to the demilitarized zone.
So this kind of behavior by North Korea combined with actual physical attacks.
The sinking of -- South Korean Corvette a couple of years ago I think necessarily should concern us quite a bit I think that is.
What is difficult to gauge here how much attention.
How much credence do you give him more now.
Well I wouldn't worry -- to have much credibility we give to on -- I think any country with nuclear weapons ruled by hereditary Communist dictatorship hat has enough credibility to get our attention and that's why I think what we need to focus on.
Is how to solve the problem.
Of this irrational totalitarian regime with its hands on nuclear weapons that's -- I've long believed the -- -- Real solution here is to eliminate North Korea the to reunify the Korean Peninsula.
And put in a representative government to do that we have to persuade China no small task but that's the -- we need to.
Wow what a challenge that is -- show our viewers that the region here to Johnny just mentioned.
South Korea down here Russia to the north.
Always a player so to his Japan advance -- one time.
38 parallel this is where the the treaty was agreed to in 1953 and just this past week.
The north says that treaty can be scrap -- being disputed now as well but here in South Korea mr.
ambassador you have.
Thousands and thousands of American forces that brings us to be -- we got a question now when I get to because -- -- frying foods rice.
If North Korea goes against the cease fire and attacks the other side of the 38 parallel.
Will the US send more troops to South Korea and end up being the makings for another Korean.
War is that a possibility.
Or not.
Well look we we've had a mutual security agreement with South Korea since the end of the Korean War it's an alliance almost as old as NATO.
We've got a similar agreement with Japan yes we would defend South Korea.
But let's be clear we've been preparing for this a long time if the north is foolish enough to come across the demilitarized zone.
It'll mean the end of the regime in North Korea it'll cause.
Terrible damage in South Korea -- we don't want to see it happen but.
Again we're we're not dealing with somebody on the other side of that the militarized zone who is rational and our terms.
And as long as that regime exists the kind of threat that we're concerned about especially with a regime that has nuclear weapons will exist.
And I think why we have to -- trying to find the hard though it may be.
The permanent solution which is getting rid of that regime and -- speak clearer in this in North Korean attack in the south with well would rather with near certainty.
And in the destruction of North Korea.
Is that -- -- -- South Korea -- us as well.
Well I think it said by -- you know when Colin Powell left being chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that before it became secretary of state.
He used to say if North Korea attacked South Korea especially if they used chemical weapons.
That we would turn North Korea into a charcoal -- and that's about right it would be the end of the North Korean regime.
But it's it's a conflict we don't want to win we don't want to have it in the first place.
How many forces do we have there surpass them.
What we have under 30000 now that number's been coming down and you know our goal is to move them away from the demilitarized zone to put them.
In a rear area at the southern part of the peninsula.
So there are available for deployment.
All around Asia we'd like to give South Korea really the lead in the command but look we do exercises with the South Koreans all the time we we are.
Prepared in in the event the north Koreans do something foolish it's it's it just shows though that when you're at the mercy.
Of a regime that simply is not rational and our terms it's not an acceptable way to live is it your view of the US forces were not there in South Korea that north would have done something already.
Perhaps -- vision.
Well -- it's possible anything's possible with this kind of regime but you know it's ironic that north Koreans don't want the Americans to move away from the 38.
Parallel along the DMZ they want us pinned down there because they think they hold us hostage.
And I think it shows -- really how fragile the regime in the north is China knows it too and that's why they've been afraid to put.
Pressure on North Korea which they uniquely could do.
Because they have not wanted to see the regime collapse in the peninsula reunified that's why we need to work on China ultimately.
China doesn't want North Korea with nuclear weapons they've either got to take the weapons away from North Korea or find an alternative and I think reunification is the only.
Long term route to peace and stability in northeast Asia -- noted thank you John Bolton mr.
best thank you just.
