Americans seem to be cooling a bit on the president's handling of the economy in spite of this surge that has -- Wall Street to record numbers.

And an improving employment picture.

A -- Washington Post ABC news poll finds 44% approve of the way the president is handling the economy that's down from 50% in December.

Right now 52%.

Disapprove and when it comes to public trust on dealing with the economy.

The president has only a slight edge over congressional Republicans 44 to 40%.

Joining us now Juan Williams he is a Fox News political analyst as you well know so what's your thinking about the reasons behind the president's slide in the polls on the economy one.

Independent voters John who were previously been convinced that -- Obama.

Really had a better handle on the economy than the Republicans and now if you look inside the poll numbers that you just cited.

What you see is that independents have gone over the edge and now favor Republicans slightly to the president.

So I think that this in fact is that evidence of the success of a Republican strategy the Republican strategy.

In the midst of the -- was to say this request is gonna happen.

-- the president's a real leader.

He's -- -- accept some latitude from odds and make this sequester.

Less painful for all Americans the president as you know turn that down I'm not sure with -- sincere offer by the way but.

The president turned it down.

And I think lots of people saw that or thought.

This guy's really not interested in -- deal he's trying to make it more painful to make his point and they they agree with Republicans that the lack of leadership when it comes to the president.

Well you say that but but there is an interesting poll number that I wanna put up on screen the same voters were asked will budget cuts hurt the economy.

And 64%.

Said -- how we think they are going to 32% said now so.

So if they thought that that that the sequester the budget -- -- was going to we're going to hurt the economy.

Or why are they casting the blame on the president.

Well -- again what they want is a deal overall than they think the president should be making an effort that's why you referenced the charm offensive.

And we -- see that happening today in Washington.

The president has to make it clear that even if Democrats feel that Republicans have been.

Just obstructing the president's agenda and refused to make a deal that's not -- speaker Boehner is that interest because he can't get the Tea Party folks and his caucus to go along or not and minority leader McDonald's interest in the senate because he fears that challenge in his home state of Kentucky.

That president nonetheless have to convince independents that he's trying to make a deal he can't simply say I'm sick of these Republicans are condemned Republicans.

As you know John we talk about 50% of the president's as the president's job approval rating that's.

OK but -- down a little bit from where it was as you point out if you look at the congressional approval rating.

Gee whiz it's like 16%.

Chance -- -- me getting beat up on the congress to look fairly well but at some what people say no you're the president.

Let's make it happen show some leadership I think that's what we're saying it's -- -- there they blame on the Republicans more than the president but again they say.

Make a -- Mr.

President be the president.

Here's here's an idea let's lock -- mall in -- -- swear that the secrecy.

And then wait for the smoke to tell us what they've come up.

All we could look with a bird.

There you go.

Juan Williams thanks -- the decision you're welcome Jeff I.
