Reaction to -- Obama's meeting with house Republicans -- first in nearly two years.
The meeting part of a new push to reach a deal on the budget.
Seems that both sides still far apart on this congressman Randy Forbes a Republican.
From Virginia was inside that meeting yesterday -- -- good morning to you.
Thank you for -- I don't know if I want to take our viewers and me for that matter inside this room yesterday who was there first of law.
-- we had almost the entire Republican conference I don't know of anybody that wasn't there was a full run and the president was in there.
He was -- with a great deal respect and we continually tell him that he's welcome any time and we're glad have a dialogue okay all right so a lot of people in that room the -- -- was impressive how did the meeting started he began.
With his right -- he'd he had it now in a very short opening statement and he went right into questions but that.
Questions I think the people have been pre selected that we're gonna ask the questions so I think he had a little bit of -- tipoff as to what the questions we're going to be but it was still look good dialogue right the -- -- -- did you get a chance to ask a question.
I did not bill I would've liked today asking the question now but.
How we had some good questions the interesting thing always that the president is you know the president's words kind of evolved so it's very difficult to find out.
What he really means on certain issues but it's it's always good to have that dollar OK I think without any hang on one just one more question about this it was your question asked.
Toward him or or would you have taken him in a direction that was not.
Taking that I would -- in a different question I think there was some excellent questions asked about the budget.
I would have asking some questions about national defense -- chair the -- power subcommittee.
And you know the president talked about how catastrophic sequestration what's going to be.
But I what are -- asking about.
The fact that he cut nineteen times.
The amount of money that sequestration will cut out this year he had already cut at a national defense and out asking questions about that are now let's get to specifics John Boehner said it was a good meeting.
Would you considered a good meeting.
I think anytime -- to have a Dow -- its a good meeting I think we would like further.
President perhaps to give us a little more detail.
And and really stick to some of the things that he says but I think any time we haven't outlawed it's a good thing and I think that's what the American people want -- say -- Can now he also wrote a piece in the Washington Post today.
The speaker did speaker Boehner he said he's heard the arguments many times -- paraphrase.
This is his words now despite packing 400 what is it now the 650.
Billion dollars worth of tax hikes in January the day meaning Democrats.
Would rather raise taxes yet again.
And tinker around the edges on entitlements if at all.
While spending on these in.
And many other federal programs continues on auto pilot the other thing he said is that I've heard the arguments before but my colleagues have not.
Are you one of those colleagues who were hearing his arguments for the first time.
Now I think bill most of us have heard those arguments over and over again and I think one of the things that.
We'd like to see is the president to make some firm commitments and stick to the money.
Just that for the president to come out and say that he believes that we should balance the budget would be a great thing for the president to come out and be consistent and he -- he can have for example bill.
And told us that he recognized that we were.
All good people we were good neighbors we laughed our country we wanted to serve -- constituents.
But many guys that has a press conference worry says that the only thing that unites Republicans raise their desire to protect the top 1%.
The wealthy people in the country at the end I think one of the things that was really humorous and kind of got maybe even the most push back.
Was -- we talked about the closing of the White House which we thought was a bad decision and he blamed it on the Secret Service the Secret Service that works for him.
And under his control the other starters I think he he said that what were his words are -- he said we we we -- that you know we thought it was really bad.
To have the White House close to the American people that that.
Was a bad signal a bad sign we should do it -- the president literally said that wasn't his decision that was the Secret -- this decision and and you could hear laughter kind of in the room because everybody in and knows the Secret Service.
-- works for the president but secondly can you really imagine the Secret Service doing anything at the White House.
That the president didn't approve figures say that my comment was greeted with laughter by how Manuel if it was kind of kind of like a little bit pushed back at you to tell the -- Didn't agree with the statement that it was the secret services far did did he mention as he did -- and then ABC interview George Stephanopoulos that the -- is not the real issue.
Facing only -- he did he definitely said that he didn't feel that the debt could that the budget can be balanced that we didn't need to address that.
All right now as a top priority -- one of the questions we tried to getting to say bill was exactly.
Whether or not he thought balancing the budget was a proper goal.
And if he didn't agree with the ten year plan to do that.
How many years did he think we should have to balance the budget and the answer -- address that he wouldn't he wouldn't it just that no use united.
That's right now he didn't say anything about it's fascinating incident on our Randy Forbes thank you for your time we're gonna talk to other colleagues and also get reaction from the white house on this.
As it continues on the senate side and Randy Forbes from Virginia.
