Outpouring of reaction to the newly elected leader of the Catholic Church today -- France is planning an inaugural mass.
-- in the Sistine Chapel and that's where he was elected official yesterday he told a crowd of some 100000 people in Saint Peter's Square that he would pray.
To marry.
That she would watch over all of Rome that was one of the things that he said he also -- for prayers for him as well.
Pope Francis -- is Argentinian.
Is the first non European in more than a thousand years to be Pope he's also the first jesuit Pope.
Ambassador Raymond -- -- the former ambassadors back again the former mayor of Boston.
And he also met -- Francis last year ambassador nice have you with us today.
I -- nice to be with you thank you -- Francis remains a little bit of a mystery to so many of us -- new name.
For many as well just tell us a little bit about meeting him and your impressions.
Well -- -- -- -- -- his background of course jesuit.
Also somebody who's been committed to the yeah fundamental issues of social justice of the Catholic Church.
Which is -- refreshing which is nice to see.
But I think even though we 76 years of age generally.
A new dimension to dimension is he's an outsider.
In if the issue is we -- -- changing challenges facing the church.
And society today than -- do you really evident politics thought he is you really need an outside our.
To deal with those kind of issues not somebody -- is inside trying to defend the status quo so I welcome.
-- -- Francis who to commend and make those changes not theological changes not those kinda changes on the think -- the issues of traditional issues but.
Around the issues of inclusion.
Transparency.
And openness.
Solicit a little deeper into that because one of the most remarkable things about today.
Is that today there is a clean -- Right at any moment you -- get an idea of where where the priority is of this Pope where do you think the priority should be of all the different matters that lie ahead of him.
Where do you think his focus needs to be.
Well I think.
Bureaucratic.
Snafus inside the Vatican itself.
This the leaks and so forth controlling.
Controlling that I think that's really harmful.
To the Catholic church and I think people across the country and a little -- of period of time I've already been following.
This is this announcement.
I think people -- stunning to see a sense of hope.
A new day for the Catholic church and what's hot did it hit some people don't comprehend that.
Because he's an -- the man.
But by the same token.
You know he brings a fresh perspective.
About the issue -- Me and facing the Catholic Church today.
And he's got this -- -- -- and Jesuits social economic justice I was particularly pleased that he took as his name.
Francis because Francis of course it's -- neat.
Is the symbol of concern for the poor.
Concern for the downtrodden.
All those issues that the Catholic Church has always been the leader in the world.
In fighting for those people without a voice.
One of the things you've also said is that his selection.
Is now only a great tribute to him.
But a great tribute to America and our cardinals -- feel that way.
Well I'll tell you what I wrote a book got several years ago is called the accidental -- and I predicted that there would be an American -- -- he actually could have added the Latin American and I would have been a 100% accurate.
But I think it's really time to -- -- I'd.
Faithful.
People from the Latin America and central American community.
Flood he had devoted service as a Catholic Church over the years.
And also a recognition.
Of true great cardinals here in America Cardinal Sean O'Malley of Boston cardinal Timothy Dolan.
I mean they brought great pride in enthusiasm.
So while the world's.
-- -- -- to the air currents and the people that they think from the cities that they represent.
Boston he -- the United States.
So Americans have every right to be proud of both cardinals Dolan and in O'Malley and as we are proud of them.
I'm sure especially app from the state of Massachusetts is really quick here ambassador Flynn does -- that.
-- Francis last year if you had the opportunity to see him again today what would you say they haven't.
Well I'd say make sure you you've you've understand that there are a lot of great American Catholics here.
-- a faithful that have devoted.
And don't believe everything you read in the newspaper.
Because you know we our church that is moving forward we wanna be pot of something very important we -- faithful we out loyal.
And I hope he understands that I'm I'm sure that he will he -- that.
That America's best days are yet to come.
Investor playing great to have your perspective with us today thank you spend the time.
