Week Daily Beast columnist -- and powers Richard Bernal former spokesman into the last four US ambassadors to the United Nations.
Jim Pinkerton contributing editor the American conservative magazine and Fox News analyst Juan Williams.
I'm John Scott FOX News Watch is -- right now.
We're -- -- balance the budget.
Ten years because if you look at what Paul Ryan -- to balance the budget.
It means that you have to.
-- for -- Medicare.
You have to slash.
Deeply.
Into programs like Medicaid my goal is not to chase.
-- balanced budget just for the sake of balance.
So President Obama there appearing on ABC telling George Stephanopoulos that balancing the budget is not his goal.
And attacking congressman Paul Ryan for the budget that he proposed so Jim to you first of the media.
Ignore the president's.
Contention that a balanced budget is not really in the realm for.
I don't think the media have ever thought of that is particularly high goal.
Themselves.
And yet it as Scott -- both the American conservative and Matt Miller at the Washington Post -- -- -- out.
That that the problem the president has had on this.
Sort of moderate but of course is trying to strike which is in part tax increases and in part.
Lee's alleged spending cuts is it nobody is really for that and synthesis are too vague enough and -- and to really get excited over and so.
What you're seeing now in what the president presented in the slash word -- -- as word got -- GUT went first of Medicare.
I think is the beginning of the -- the 2014.
Mid term elections where.
The Democrats are gonna come after Republicans and Paul Ryan on guiding her flashing their their words the Medicare and I think that.
Action and you see it in the deeds that Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Twitter feed.
Is really where the Democrats are headed so -- the presidents -- the balanced budget is not his goal is that newsworthy.
-- I think for most reporters are -- used to hearing this I mean bush must have -- it and every state of the union and I don't think get a bounce budget line laughed so it's not it's one of those things it's a sort of boilerplate these days.
When people promise it.
The president.
I think -- expecting the president to say that he wants abound but balanced budget right now as a little bit putting in the Republican paradigm because most liberals don't think of that as our short term.
Goal our goal right now -- to avoid austerity and and spending keep the economy moving and you know in the long run balance the budget but not it's not a short term.
All what about the interview itself wanna Stephanopoulos claimed that it was and -- holds barred interview but it around more like the presidential charm offensive.
Continue to.
Well that's their overall media strategist -- -- what struck me was that even odd.
ABC that night it was not the lead story in their own -- -- And when they got to it that way they -- it was to say the president talks about the hacking scandal or Michelle Obama the First Lady.
Now is that a clue that there's no one knows yet that was known those I mean basically it is the president using that.
Format I think and we saw this with the CBS interview that was so widely criticized for sixty minutes interview.
But he uses the press in this way on his terms and I I think this is what we're seeing -- succeed for him time and again.
Go -- it except you know let's let's be honest this is the president of the United States who is candidate.
Called six trillion dollars on American six trillion dollars is un American.
Sixteen trillion dollars is not American.
I mean this is the next level and yet the media are acting like I think you are correct Hairston.
Well we've heard it before but bush never called.
-- you know six trillion dollar national debt on American.
Obama did -- and -- accountable if it's on I was on American its ultimate parent surplus isn't from what I.
-- about the fact that we went through a terrible recession here and stance and steps had to be taken and don't forget Dick Cheney is the man who famously said that.
That deficits don't matter -- but you're avoiding.
The number one.
Problem right now which is President Obama called six trillion dollars on American he has overseen sixteen throwing.
In the meantime Jim Paul Ryan introduced his budget and it's hard to find -- good words said about it in the press you might be thinking for example the Washington post's Jonathan Bernstein.
Said -- what do you do when one party is this.
Underline that this dishonest and sometimes reporters say why don't write the headlines.
And in the -- also called it breathtaking it is so I guess that kind of speak from their receivers NCs.
And a much of the Washington Post he all right why does he not -- and I mean disagree or agree with the budget that he puts forward why does he not get credit for.
Is putting something on paper and saying this is what I think we ought to do whatever is job I -- I don't know what you want is yet the president.
Job to put out but yeah it has says he can't do and he has been rightly criticized.
You know I think that in the fact that he's late with this budget is a problem and he's been criticized for I don't think hotline gets extra points just for putting a budget out.
I I think you need to put something out that act that people actually might -- -- -- work together on and this is not that document you cannot make your centerpiece of your.
Budget repealing the president's.
Cornerstone.
It obamacare it's is a non starter and everybody knows it so I don't I don't care is a serious exercise -- because something meant to gin up the base and that's the way it should be covered.
-- in the meantime.
One of the president's charm offensive.
Is it working on the -- even.
On the press an awful gosh I think -- it -- -- -- -- market.
Attacked and -- for -- I think I think that's pretty much is an old story.
And I think that -- the press has suggested here that the fact that he's going up -- the -- Is having some impact if I was the ball the press on this story -- that they have somehow been slow to correlate the fact that his numbers were dropping and that the Republicans succeeded Hussein.
His leadership is -- because these that not getting -- the deal -- can't just blame the Republicans.
ABC's Jonathan Karl had this exchange with Jay Carney the presidential spokesman watch.
How much is it going to cost present trial this week.
-- -- -- -- And he's elected to represent all the people and he travels around the country appropriately I don't have a figure on the cost of presidential travel is.
You know.
Obviously something has every president deals with because of security and staff.
A significant undertaking but.
Yeah the president has to travel around the country travel around the world that is part of his job.
I'm -- costs from golf at all John again.
Yes you you're trivializing and impact your people will lose their -- three quarters -- -- million people will lose their jobs.
White House the White House is closed for tour -- but the president still managed to get in some travel this week including a green energy expo in Chicago.
So Jake attorney's wife.
Claire Shipman works at ABC news with Jonathan Karl I would love to see -- C news room after that exchange.
I mean -- lead got to give credit to Jonathan Karl here is someone who is trying to get some serious answers.
You shouldn't allow the White House to play politics with the White House two hours and then be able to get away with the golf outings all right.
What do I does got you attic I don't get me well I think that minimizes the impact of the press that's just not a serious question I think what -- and I.
As well I would yeah.
Glory years of an -- -- now I mean how much does that cost the president think that the American people wanna see the president but.
No but if you just can't they don't get to see him becoming in the southwestern isn't unusual circumstance I agree under normal circumstances that would you it -- victory.
That the White House is -- Easter egg roll.
Because that just proves again this event that they can buy them if anything but let's head on camera -- -- -- ever pictured that basically that is privately funded through eggs sale.
