Chinese officials are now warning that the United States plan to ratchet up our missile defense.

Against North Korea was just antagonize North Korea.

You may recall last week the Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the US is adding fourteen new ground based missile interceptors that would -- put in Alaska.

That's double the amount we had before and this follows North Korea's successful long range missile launch that happened in December.

A recent threat to carry out preemptive nuclear attack on the United States in it it is specifically.

They said they were gonna hit Washington which we don't think they can do but nevertheless there's a lot of talk.

The Chinese foreign minister said today that diplomacy.

Should solve the disputes over North Korea's nuclear program and that the United States missile defense plan.

Is not helping.

The -- -- -- governor -- US ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson is with us.

He is visit North Korea several times been involved -- diplomatic missions there and I was wondering what your take on this as -- I know we don't know a lot about this can the younger who's running the place now.

But to put up defense systems Chinese don't like that.

Well it shows that the Chinese will only do so much to help us in the end.

They will back North Korea they did help us with a tough Security Council resolution on sanctions last week they helped author.

Which put a little bite into the sanctions but.

Now that I think we did the right thing to put those interceptors not.

Targeted against Russian missiles -- North Korean missiles were -- more of a threat.

The Chinese are kind of backing off.

So in the end.

I've always felt -- that the Chinese don't really want -- help us there because it's a threat to us they don't want all of these north Koreans coming in as refugees.

So in the end they say diplomacy but diplomacy has to be backed by a few states and that stick.

The biggest state carried out -- by -- is by China.

And if they don't want to help us it's going to be tough to get the north Koreans.

Moving in the right direction.

I remember when -- the younger this Kim Jong-un became a new leader of North Korea we didn't even have a picture that was less than five years old something of an.

But more importantly is who is who's pulling his strings as you said in -- commercial break do we know.

Well the danger is that the hard line elements of the North Korean military he's got an uncle that.

Is not very pro engagement pro US.

The danger is that they're pulling his strings and he's allowing him to do that now what I do think is happening is.

Kim -- on -- his people think that he has to strengthen himself because he's so young and inexperienced.

When his own people.

So maybe a lot of this -- to show his own people.

That he's in charge -- that the missile launch was successful the one they did a couple months ago.

But if it's amazing what we don't know about this guy and this is why I think it's important that.

Somehow down -- line we engage them with diplomacy but backed up by a few -- like the Chinese could help us more than their -- -- That live in the South Koreans essentially ended the cease fire that put that with the war on hold.

How concerned are the South Koreans about this -- well they should be concerned because any little conflagration any little mishap by the north Koreans miscalculation.

Could you know get it get both sides in -- in -- conflict and that pulls us again.

So this is why I've always said North Korea has missiles they got a million and a half men and arms.

They've got possibly four -- five nuclear weapons they've got an untested.

Unpredictable leader.

No it's it's -- on that -- peninsula we got to watch it.
