Items that -- -- judge in his book about Roger and -- also run -- off camera has just come out today -- Tim yesterday yesterday exciting.
Very -- still -- this year that you spelling -- trails what an interesting experience.
Fascinating experience.
Rogers the guy who's you know.
Been around forever.
He's been in national politics.
Since 1968.
So -- -- and I am almost -- the road almost dialogue.
-- so we there's a lot of history that I was interest of the things that he's done with.
Richard Nixon was the Ronald Reagan.
He has -- stories he told me stories about.
Ronald and Nancy Reagan you know everybody was always curious about their marriage.
And they seem to be such an ideal couples can Roger said that they decided after many years of not having acted together.
-- was already in the White House that they would duo.
-- commercial something to do than -- using drugs and Muslims public affairs commercials.
And they had a script and Roger -- producing.
In the Oval Office or someplace and would.
And Nancy kept correcting Ronald Reagan from readings of the lines.
And he got annoyed with the earnings that you know I've done this for a living before.
And seems they would you don't have to talk to me -- In that way and she -- walked out of the -- Rogers Rogers is producing so with the present the United States generated -- reasonable route when we do know and Reagan's -- Well to the football.
Let's watch the football candidate in addition really anything -- -- yet to be back in fifteen minutes.
According to Roger fourteen minutes and thirty seconds later -- can't look back in as though nothing happened and they did the in the -- of the commercial.
That's great yes great stories.
I love them you know you give the entire view from the beginning Russians like a lot of people realize that he he grew up.
As little boy in Warren Ohio instead was rough on him rough beat him at times.
And eventually he went to Ohio University who was interested in communications got into television yet.
And I really found something that he liked and one of the great stories you tell and and it's it's a famous Roger -- story is when he was one of the producers at the Mike Douglas show thing.
What changed his life was the fact that there was no place for Richard Nixon to set -- in anticipation throughout his appearance on the Mike Douglas show.
That's to mix those vitamin could come back.
Politically after losing in the 1960 partially -- -- a bit of the TV debates with Kennedy and and he said to Roger.
In the course of conversation and it's too bad that a man has to -- gimmicks to get elected.
But president.
And Roger who's in his mid twenties.
And -- and said.
If you think TV is a -- -- -- we're gonna get elected to anything.
And as a result of that Nixon -- -- on this TV in the the -- 68 campaign.
Which do you talk to a Rodgers is.
Youth and Warren Ohio.
And I -- -- I was surprised to know until the guidance -- all -- Rodgers and hemophilia and and of course -- especially -- was you know potentially fatal disease and so he's.
Really lived his entire life well he told me that he went back recently from -- and -- And do well to do cemetery where -- is them -- film plot.
And there were of the plots of his grandfather and his grandmother.
In between was a small.
Plot a child size plus.
And -- it was for him.
Because they didn't expect that he would -- to adulthood.
And they didn't think he would live long enough to be very Nixon's career so he hit -- the plot between this could.
That's powerful I hadn't heard that Roger was in Philly back into your book -- you must obviously.
He spent a lot of time with him he opened up to you in -- way that he hasn't -- other people.
Well.
We did spend a lot of time together and we talked about a lot of things.
We have a lot of experience and common -- from small factory towns in the midwestern group rooms and color from Pontiac Pontiac Michigan.
Overshadowed for -- it.
It doesn't get many of -- But it deserves more.
And you know we both are fathers and one of the things that -- -- but what Roger.
About Rogers a guy.
Is this box that he has which I -- the -- box.
In which he's been putting memorabilia.
Away from his son you know Roger is.
So that he too is he says he's got maybe ten more years -- -- actuarial.
Accounting I asked him what he's gonna do if he gets to -- he finds out that -- a liberal lady and it is said and that's God's business.
But it looks and acts that he doesn't think he's a liberal think should lose her balance.
It but.
Roger puts the way things was that -- son.
So that when he's gone that we'll have a lot of things to remember about his father and also advice from his father that -- -- so for -- that's yeah.
Beautiful.
You know I lost my father when I was seventeen.
And it was a sudden things those who didn't have an opportunity to -- but it made me think that this is something that I would like to do from my my kids alone.
-- what else about Roger that you think maybe the public should know about.
Well he's a bad guy get on the wrong side.
And I can say that.
The other one the other things is that Rodgers you know I did a quiz there's a professor that you silly.
To have grossed close load Tim -- -- them because of political science we -- -- the study.
How to compare ideological slant the news organizations.
-- -- compare your own slant to those organizations.
And I said to Roger this could be career ending for you but let's do it in -- Calif who.
So he took the test and I took office.
And and we had the Fox News figures from this professor.
And it turned out that Roger.
Is actually more conservative than the network.
Which I think and I thought that was interest -- -- he agreed that that you know that's probably right and we talked about the fact that there is.
Quite a lot of economies of fox -- mean obviously some network and has one view of some that we're business -- them from conservative.
Place in many ways.
But there -- a lot of -- love -- diversity you.
Ideas and thought on this -- a lot of you know liberals and a lot of people who work hard to classify.
As well vote a lot of conservative and that's because Roger -- -- Has.
Created that way because this network -- run.
-- it is what why is it and and you're getting a little taste of this now that the books coming out why is it that the cultural left.
Just.
You know.
He drives increase.
Well I don't know I think I'm a member of the cultural left.
He doesn't drive me crazy I think it's more question of how much.
How much tolerance people have for other people's point of view.
And Rodgers so direct and he can be at times so abrasive.
And kinds I think he's I'm sure he's intentionally brings to relate to pull people's chains here he's he's he's told me a couple of times that I about it.
I'm not a punch your bottom -- And that's certainly he sees himself as being under assault by.
The cultural lead and so.
When people flight back there have been controversial in Rogers -- Rogers the fighter.
Of course he doesn't pull any punches and even in your book I mean you have so many juicy things he even.
Famous women from the advance press has said some perhaps unkind things about Newt Gingrich and even Republicans and he calls it like he sees it.
And Newt Gingrich cheated and beat Santoro -- million -- a couple of things which were.
Not wildly positive about Glenn -- and and about.
Even about -- well Sarah Palin through intimated that seems to be here forever.
And and of course many Democrats I mean he said then Joseph Biden -- of -- which.
You know got a lot of attention.
And -- other people Roger likes to do that and he gets arise from people and I can tell you is an author of a book about Roger Ailes those -- my favorite parts of Roger -- -- -- Yeah if you will work scribbling.
Yeah I think he's that I wrote down an absolutely.
You know you've been good about.
Not ask you mean.
You -- subjects often ask you put things off the record our agreement was that we would.
Do this book unauthorized.
He would not have -- control of those over the the content content of it.
But I would check his quotes with him which always -- with everybody that I write about -- he's tape recorder.
And that he could put things off the record if he wanted to and less than almost anyone you've written about you put things very few things.
And I understand that you also reunited Roger with some of his childhood friend.
I did with one in particular he had a friend Austin.
Pendleton who's a I didn't really -- -- -- it's right who's an actor here in new York and they were kids together and Warren.
And hadn't seen each other -- May be forty years.
And when I first met Roger he said you know not everybody loves me in New York there's this guy Austin my best friend in Warren.
He's an -- now director I'm sure that.
You know he's probably embarrassed to have known I haven't seen him in forty years.
So I called a -- -- called them and he said Roger Roger I -- Roger and I haven't seen Roger you know and -- -- a lot of what you -- what have lunch we'll just the three of us who have won three of the two of them announced that there have been.
You know -- And that's what we did and then sat like little kids you know they were you memorable into the store remember who sold salute and a quarter of the street and it wasn't in Finland in the Austin said the -- continuously come -- -- You know ogre for being -- right wing government -- -- -- offensive no it was a matter of fact.
I remember the speech you gave in this is -- missiles class in the and it's been doing -- then.
I lower collection can you convince me to vote for rise -- -- apple apple apple and -- -- on the other hand.
You know Roger had a career in the theater he was the producer of -- roll off Broadway and gets a warning when it put them Baltimore.
Any -- that back to the influence of Austin.
And he also -- advances in public to know this -- you lose them.
He was a hoped for when he was a -- and and his wife Beth told me that he still has a pair of dancing shoes you know -- -- that's current I don't know how.
I CR yeah.
It tomorrow if -- -- about it -- to.
Great when he's up he is a true American pioneer and he really has changed when people watch television food and you know everybody I know who works for him.
Since he's the best -- we've ever had one of the things about.
Boss and he and is it there's a connection where we are very loyal to him and he's very loyal to us.
That's what people tell me I hear a lot of loyalty stories and a lot of let people here whose careers he made a lot of people -- careers he resuscitated right.
And I think that there's a sense that Roger.
Has been a dependable.
Boss it was it was.
Doug Kennedy told his story about he had.
Some publicity issues around.
Fight -- -- -- in the hospital right.
-- the Roger.
What when the Kennedy.
You know media circus began.
Roger called -- come up to my hosts stay with those -- blows over.
That will cook for you.
And Doug Kennedy said to me.
There is another media executive of the country that would do something like.
-- -- It is it's a great book and it's a fast read and it it's all this -- -- it isn't competent people say that to me I don't -- -- you change your.
I don't think it's a -- now know.
She's exactly right I mean I started reading that and I thought OK I've got time for one -- I want to read a 150 pages and -- it it would -- them.
It's a great book it's called Roger -- a camera certificates thank you very much.
I've talked into -- -- -- -- you definition shall.
We'll seats are dancing with Roger I call it mean can and can't I paired up --
