We look at just how committed President Obama and congressional Democrats are to pushing for significant upgrades in federal gun control laws.

The decision -- one top Democrat is seen by some.

As an admission that will not happen.

Correspondent Shannon Bream has the story.

We've got lots of stuff to do.

We've got gun legislation.

But -- not legislation hits the senate floor it apparently will not include the toughest provisions.

Many that a President Obama has publicly call for the wake of the deadly new town tragedy.

Congress should restore ban on military style assault weapons.

And a ten round limit for magazines.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has passed an assault weapons ban which would also limit gun magazine sizes along with three other gun control measures.

Yet senate majority leader Harry Reid a longtime gun rights advocate with the B rating from the National Rifle Association says.

The strictest provisions will not go to the full senate for an up or down vote.

It's my job is to find one of those and I can bring to the floor or two of them but at least -- through the committee.

-- and -- I can get sixty votes to proceed at that.

We cannot help votes -- everything unless I get something on the floor.

Senator Dianne Feinstein who sponsored the new assault weapons ban yesterday publicly voiced her displeasure with -- This is very important to me and I'm not -- -- lay down and play dead.

It came out on -- 108 vote of the Judiciary Committee not to give me a vote on this would be a major betrayal.

Of trust.

Others on the left -- convinced Reid wouldn't have caved -- out the president's approval and questioned why mr.

Obama appears to be backing down on an issue he's called a top priority.

I think that you know.

That the reality is that there's something that he really wanted then why isn't he putting muscle behind it while lawmakers in Washington continued their debates -- number of state legislatures are moving forward.

Today Colorado -- New York in passing tough post -- laws.

As governor John Hickenlooper signed new measures restricting the sales of firearms and ammunition and push back against criticism that the new gun laws have been.

-- through and I hope you're not -- Washington up as a model of how we should.

How we should do R&R lawmaking process.

For now it appears Reid will offer up legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal trafficking and straw purchasers.
