Colorado's governor John Hickenlooper signed three new laws on gun control.
The laws require universal background checks for the purchase of firearms and fees for those -- as well as a fifteen round magazine limit.
Some analysts say chairs have been critical law saying they're not gonna stop criminals from getting guns and here's how the governor responded.
-- -- -- -- Reflect a more rural part of the state generally.
Again the the police chief's support these bills so again that's part of that urban rural divide that I've.
I intend to work very hard to -- Weld County Colorado sheriff John Cook says he's not gonna enforce those new measures and he's filing a lawsuit against the state.
He joins us now -- it's a real pleasure to have you thanks for joining.
When I heard that statement -- the governor I was thinking that he tried to make this rural vs urban.
Almost as if he was saying.
And thoughtful verses uneducated and out in the country in the sticks.
I was -- a definitive that because -- I understand sheriffs are elected by people they have to be responsible to and most police chiefs are appointed and there.
Appointed by political people.
Are people who are bureaucrats.
How did you react to the governor's comment.
Well governor who doesn't surprise me that governor Hickenlooper would say that in an interview just a couple of years ago.
He said that the people roll call rattle and on the western slope.
Are slow thinkers so -- governor said that.
It did not does surprise me at all this is not.
A rural verses urban.
Our liberties it's about our freedom.
It's about all right to self defense and those issues transcend.
Whether you live in the city or whether you live in the county.
-- the push is that these -- laws are gonna somehow make everybody safer we're gonna be better off but every.
Again you use that term of the street cops I've never talked to one who said boy I I really hope that we.
You know take away the capacity of a magazine.
For a legal gun -- -- because that'll make a safe is a note that the crooks aren't gonna turn their magazines in and say oh you know what I know now I'm supposed to only have.
Five rounds so let me turn this sand and if you could exchange it for one that only has five.
-- it would I think everybody has reconnaissance and now so.
What is the disconnect with some of these politicians and why is that they don't understand that they're gonna be asking the wrong people to give up the wrong thing.
I think it's a knee jerk reaction they eat their politicians who say.
We have to do something anything even if the laws don't make sense that shows that we're doing some things.
And -- -- you're right the criminals are not gonna look at a background check one criminals not gonna say to another before right.
Give you this stolen gone for that mess we need to go get a background check back -- -- to work at a the you know as far as the -- is it this -- -- magazine bill or way to say how many rounds a person needs to protect them in the family.
There -- there is a very big disconnect and it's really unfortunate because -- these gun laws or unenforceable.
And another thing that.
I guess these to be brought and you've got industries are saying -- only Colorado if this goes through mag poll which makes magazines.
That's what you're hearing and -- how does this affect Colorado.
Well Nat -- is actually a Weld County company -- right outside the town very.
And they are leaving Colorado there and that is not just a threat.
They're gonna take two to 400 jobs with them and you know you hear the Democrats say it's jobs jobs jobs well.
That is just -- they don't care that -- -- take two to 400 jobs.
And it's not just mad bull they there -- other companies that work with Mac poll that have said they will leave the state as well and take jobs with them.
One of the companies said they were gonna do a million dollar expansion.
And they're they put that on hold so it's not just those jobs it's the construction jobs that go along with it and so they just don't care.
Who they hurt when they come up these gun laws -- like -- for the wrong people out of business ought to be put the criminals out of business rather than.
Legitimate law abiding companies.
Sheriff thank you very much for joining us surprises ahead here.
