President Obama announced he will head to Denver next week where he is expected to meet with -- lawmakers and push for tougher federal gun laws.
This comes as hunters begin a boycott of Colorado -- after that state passed some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation.
Including restrictions on magazine sizes and universal background checks that now have to be paid for by the applicants themselves.
Joining me now Dan Baum author of gun guys a road trip Dan was in our studio a couple of weeks ago -- you and I kind of traded places I grew up in Colorado moved to New York.
You grew up in New Jersey and moved to Colorado so what is it that hunters are saying.
About this boycott.
-- the tragedy here is.
That these was.
Assumed that gun owners are problem and instead of assuming that gun owners are the solution.
Because gun owners of the people who own the guns they are the custodians of these 300 million firearms that we live them.
And nothing good can happen to keep us safer from these guns without the cooperation of the -- guys without the participation of the -- guys.
So was like this just drive -- -- guys away and make them angry drive him into their defensive crouch and I got to add.
I am a tax and spend Democrat a lifelong gun guy and a tax and spend Democrat and it breaks my heart because.
I think it puts the Democrat controlled democratic control of Colorado at risk.
Do you think that's part of the reason that President Obama is actually going there because he feels some political vulnerability for Democrats on this issue.
I don't know I can't say what President Obama is doing what he's doing on a big Obama fan but I think he's in the wrong on this issue I think he needs to.
Rethink this and say you know gun most gun guys in America our law abiding responsible people.
They are as horrified by gun violence as anybody.
And it is today who need to be involved and solutions and banning it more guns in the future trying to adjust how many rounds can be in a magazine.
It's silly and -- guys find it deeply -- -- The so there are about 86000.
Hunting license licenses that are issued each year in Colorado to out of state hunters about 15% of the total -- I understand it.
If this boycott sticks and you know if it hurts the economy has boycotts tend to do.
The irony is that the people who are going to be hurt first and perhaps hurt the worst.
Our gun supporters themselves the outfitters the -- services the sporting goods stores.
Right and there is a prominent manufacturer.
Rifle magazines in Colorado with about 200 employees that says it's going to leave Colorado.
Take 200 jobs out of the state.
Because of these laws it's.
It's ill considered it's kind of a disaster and it's really not gonna make us safer and gotten guys are irritated by -- well do you see the legislature and the governor is saying wall mainly let him stake here let's rethink this.
Mean you know there was the hit the governor had a good amount of time between the passage of the bill and when he signed.
Several days went by and a lot of us thought well maybe he is rethinking this there were some big demonstrations at the state house.
He made the cut calculation whether it was a political calculation our policy calculation.
He's a good guy he's a Smart guy and this is part of what makes -- guys so suspicious.
They say look governor Hickenlooper is a Smart man he can't possibly think.
That he's gonna make us safer by adjusting the number of rounds in the magazines we can have and are rifles.
So he must have something else going around and and what -- guys perceive is.
It's not the guns he's after its -- he doesn't like us and he wants the disapproval who wants to express disapproval of us.
And you can imagine how insulting that.
Because gun guys -- -- -- the criminals don't care how many rounds they have in the magazine of course of course anybody who has bent on mass murder is not going to be dissuaded by a -- saying how many rounds you can have a magazine.
And they are so many of these magazines out there already that anybody who wants one can -- so it's it's entirely just to.
It's a gesture and the gun guys say well what is he gesturing towards -- gesturing towards disapproval of me personally.
You can imagine how irritating and insulting matters now it'll be interesting to see what kind of a welcome the president gets there when he arrives on Wednesday Dan and I think -- probably I think you'll probably get a pretty good welcome from a lot of people here are frankly he's very popular here well and it's a very polite stayed as I can attest.
Did as a polite state Dan Baum is the author of gun guys are driven -- always good -- thanks.
Thank you for having all that.
