Are you might recall the president promised he would put everything he had into passing tough new laws to control guns.
But backers of the regulations claim the president is failing because he's going too easy on Democrats in the United States senate.
At the same time at least five Republican senators are threatening to filibuster any new gun restrictions.
Let's talk about it -- Monica Crowley Fox News contributor who new her new book is what the bleep just happened.
So the president famously said after the new town massacre he said you know it's time to crack down it's time to get tough I'm gonna give it everything I've got.
And yet when the opportunity presents itself to lean on some Democrats in the senate he doesn't do -- And he hasn't done it actually when you think about the 1994 push for gun control.
The Feinstein assault weapons ban all of that was done because President Bill Clinton at the time decided to invest his political capital in that caused John.
He went to Capitol Hill he twisted arms he cajoled he gave way things he needed to give way in order to get that through.
This president doesn't seem to want to die on the gun control.
-- and so he's sort of he's saying all of the right things that the left wants to hear about gun control.
But he's not willing to invest the time -- the political capital and actually getting it done well.
Here's what he said back on the sixteenth of January of this year.
I won't put.
Everything I've got into this and so we'll -- But I tell you -- -- -- where we can change.
That the American people demand.
Here's what that Chris -- -- said about this in his column yesterday it he said that the obstacle.
The primary obstacle to the sweeping gun control legislation he demanded in the wake of the horrific.
December school shooting in -- in Connecticut is currently a dozen or so democratic senators who have ball.
At the president's planning is that the case I mean do you see it.
Same when there's so much attention on the handful of Republican senators like Marco Rubio Rand Paul -- -- Ted Cruz who may in fact filibuster any bill that comes to the floor of the senate.
But actually they're not the real obstacle to real arts obstacle -- these Democrats are got a dozen or so.
Who are opposed to this kind of gun control you've got five Democrats John in the senate who are up for reelection next year.
Largely in red states with big gun cultures and big opposition to any kind of gun control.
Their very vulnerable here Harry Reid would like to protect them so with the president so why doesn't.
Harry Reid lean on them to give them that you know -- -- give them the legislator to pass the legislation that the president purports to want well actually what Harry Reid did was take out the assault weapons ban he's sneaking out as a standalone bills so people can vote.
Against that if they want to and then vote for the broader bill which shall they include probably -- broadening of background checks.
But even then you're gonna get a diluted version of the background checks not gonna get what the president originally wanted on that it has to -- -- the house -- even if it survives it will probably get even more watered down and not so I think you're gonna look at.
Very limited gun control if anything this year so is this a situation where Republicans by threatening to filibuster are are perhaps playing into the president's hand -- -- because in in that way they make themselves look like they are the obstacle.
Well certainly that's how the press is playing this in the Democrats have been trying to lay low trying to work a deal with Harry Reid you know give us something that we actually can vote for.
That's not gonna damage or electoral chances back at home.
But it's been a very fine line again this was the same kind of argument.
And political difficulties that Democrats face back in 94 the president at that time Clinton gotten involved and made it happen this president's not willing to it is said.
Of this president that he doesn't really like to get into the nitty gritty of legislation.
-- and the horse trading and that kind of thing that has to go on he basically likes to give speeches.
You know go to Twitter get the public on his side is he able to do that on an issue like.
Well if she really cares about an issue and he's willing to invest his political capital in doing yet he has been known to do -- we -- -- with Obama care.
He was willing to lose control of the house so that he was willing to lose the blue dog Democrats for it.
On this issue he doesn't seem willing to do it.
But look what happened he.
-- got almost nothing else accomplished in his first term after going to the map for obamacare are remembered for him that was the critical thing because socialized medicine is -- crown jewel of the welfare state that's why soonest he got involved since he became president he got involved in doing health -- right -- wasn't the economy wasn't jobs at -- Health Care Reform boom.
But decided it was his primary agenda item gun control is much further down his list.
As you can tell -- president's priorities -- what they're willing to do -- how far they're willing to go to achieve it.
Gun control is not at the top of this list and by the -- public support for gun control is now really slipping.
Many months here after new town the president heads to Colorado next week to talk about it as we mentioned earlier Monica Crowley thank you pleasure thank you --
