Well with the agreement between business and labor every major policy issue has been resolved on the gang of eight.
Now every one we've all agreed that we're not gonna come to a final agreement until we see draft legislative language and we agree on that.
But we drafted some of it already the rest of it will be drafted this week.
And so I am very very optimistic that we will have an agreement among the -- of us next week.
Was Chuck Schumer is a senator from the empire State of New York he was on this week talking about.
That is moving forward in the United States congress and this is power play and I -- Chris Farrell -- Internet hope you had a good Easter for the Christians among -- and for everybody else -- -- you've got to steal from a -- Easter basket because that stuff is delicious.
As much slightly -- -- today can attest.
When it comes to this immigration plan.
What we saw over the weekend was a ratcheting up of pressure on Marco Rubio and other Republicans to make it happen right now but conservatives are not satisfied that the enforcement and border security components of this deal have yet been served.
88 agreement between big business and big labor but what to do about guest workers since it's heightening the pressure what will happen with that.
I know who knows somebody will somebody is here we'll tell you you should be excited about that we should also.
Be excited because we're going to talk about.
The battle for the House of Representatives is we have the top talkers for the Republican.
National campaign committee and the democratic national campaign committee will be here -- -- their fight for the house and who will be in charge.
That's good don't like that we'll talk about the interest general South Carolina that's going to play on the issue of immigration and other things as a state.
As a lot of important lawmakers but also.
Happens to host a pretty -- presidential primary we'll talk about that and we'll have special.
-- -- points on the president's Pasteur the pastor at the church the president goes to and the stuff that he had to say about.
So we'll have all that.
And it will be good and you know -- -- will be good because we're starting with money in the bank -- Bob Cusack.
He's the managing editor of the hill -- is -- mobile.
On Twitter at Bob Cusack.
And welcome back brother -- thank you Chris Ellis but it's nice and warm today it's pleasant it's it's -- feels like a real spring day opening day.
Think it and this could just be -- the Expos -- the nationals.
That is there for opening day here in Washington today this is -- a baseball team and we'll check -- will report back to you on that should go all the way it should.
-- -- We you're we have enough trouble -- football season that don't need to make baseball we don't need to bring baseball back to do.
But the on the Sunday shows and last week.
You heard from.
Democrats and moderate Republicans.
That the time is now for immigration reform and and the barriers are broken and it's it's over and it's going to happen you heard from Marco Rubio.
-- Is the junior partner but in in many ways the most important or yes of this gang of eight.
That well we're not done yet and we have more work to do and if you -- that -- blow it up so these guys trying to close is Chuck Schumer and company trying to those Marco Rubio.
Well I think that there's a lot of optimism now on immigration reform but as Schumer said they have.
Have legislative language to remember the old gang -- -- the fiscal intimate they never got a bill on the bulls since its.
Versions -- now we have another gang -- -- on immigration but both parties have incentive to get this done I think it's going to be a very going to be.
Some some tough -- here I mean you've got to move this bill through the Judiciary Committee.
Then you've got to move to the floor and then to have sex act and of course is another bipartisan group in the house so but I do think that right now immigration reform is looking a lot better than -- A couple of weeks yes yes yes yes well get this is stipulated we stick it absolutely absolutely stipulated.
Because gun controls though it it does -- gun control -- start to look like something is going to pass and it will be called.
Regardless of -- -- but it's going to be pretty -- and he's been ordered out of the thing and get the background checks and that is something that call an expansion of background checks it'll just be yet.
And a mental health provisions and then -- and I think the council passed something but it will be probably couldn't meet the senate version and in the gun control -- just I mean this isn't do we support this.
The a question for.
The immigration bill that was this conservatives.
Are restive on the subject.
And are most concerned about guarantees of enforcement whether it's keeping new illegal immigrants coming out are using the which is you employers have to check the nationality.
People who want to work for them so enforcement -- -- measures are the most important thing to the right.
And rubio is saying if you go too fast on this you're gonna look there's going to be no change -- past so what happens -- Well I mean and I think on the employer stuff that's very important because the employers there have to be employer sanctions so that employers are not.
Checking that's just -- right -- -- and they are gonna get find out has not happened in the past and that's something.
That's why it is so important that the US chamber of commerce in AF LC -- -- -- yeah that's a big deal.
But still you have a lot videos and -- involved in the senate here a Leahy who's the chairman of Judiciary Committee is not part of the gang of eight so.
Com let's let's see -- he says let's see how much fines they have to pay and back taxes.
But for Marco Rubio as a potential.
All all but official presidential candidate in 26 team.
The pressure mounts on him.
To not only satisfy his party's base that is suspicious of this deal but neither does he want to get made the fall guy if things fall.
-- -- you know this this high stakes here for rubio.
And both rubio -- to a lesser degree John Boehner I think you've been trying to move the party.
Towards some type of comprehensive immigration to get away from the subject.
Yes except well.
-- because when -- through a bill -- Last -- didn't then there's a target and end the heart right.
And the border control people who have been saying hey listen we have to secure the borders first before you do any of this pathway to citizenship.
Again have something to go after and -- gonna go -- pretty hard and this is gonna divide House Republican Conference down -- about.
That will all right so in terms.
What others are suggesting on this is doing it piecemeal and you and I've talked if you were about how the piecemeal approach is difficult because.
Unless you but you can do like the one for one cleaning you get this -- you get that.
But if you don't broaden the field -- negotiations very hard to do was -- a series of small it.
It's very difficult and I think that if the senate passes this broad bill and then that.
The house does piecemeal approach mean everyone is kind of singing a happy song now -- and Chuck Schumer and and -- Gutierrez and on the outside.
It was kind of and appraising each other.
But when bills come out tonight that this could be -- different.
Right well it's sort of like when you ask people about a lot of things that are issue oriented and government.
Do you favor cuts or tax increase I like cuts yet but -- -- Bret defense or about education and when you talk about reform gives a yes but it's always their preferred flavor of what you get to the specific.
Things get difficult for.
He tried to tap the brakes a little bit is the weekends -- whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa let's not be irrationally exuberant here.
Do we what do you expect to hear from him this week.
Well I think it was very important that he he sent a letter -- and Leahy saying we need to transparent process this -- can change self.
-- senators who are on the hard right one offer amendments let them offer amendments everything should be broadcast on C span so everybody can see this is not a.
Behind the scenes that's very important for rubio but without a doubt I mean if this bill goes down he's gonna take a political event.
Washington Nationals I just wish to consider what Bob -- support is now under the New York Jets over the years.
-- have their minutes and you may want to send a letter and it did exactly zero -- at the final fourteen so it was more just and and that's a US to disassociate yourself with them I'm just saying think about it just putting it out there what you do what you do not know about football you more than make up.
With what you know about politics thank you -- OK Internet devote yourself Fletcher blood sugar levels continue to drop as the -- Flow out of your system.
And when we come back we will talk about.
What's gonna happen with house race where you can get down to the nitty gritty yes it's time it's time Internet.
We're gonna get down -- the nitty gritty with representatives from the the triples and the Republican brain so we'll talk -- that when we come back -- cigarette.
Is Sam Rayburn is the last person to have been speaker of the house on two separate -- -- And this is power play and as long time ago that -- -- did that he traded paint on the -- with Republicans and was speaker of the house I believe three different times.
Who was speaker of the house announced that she don't do it again she's gonna come back and she will be the speaker of the house.
Because Democrats are gonna come back and retake the -- the rest of the seeds that they lost Republicans in the twenty and -- Is this possible is it possible I have with me today to people who -- -- -- have very different points of view.
On the question.
Like you Internet to meet our guests.
First meet Andrea goes there she is the communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee welcome -- thank Kia and Jesse Ferguson -- is a communications director for the counterpart the doesn't.
Thank you okay now.
So is it possible is it possible there's a lot of seats and everybody is -- saying it blew it.
The idea that Democrats are gonna retake the house is it possible it's absolutely possible com was possible that I maybe I -- It is possible that I will run a marathon next year but is it likely.
It is it is possible and there's absolutely -- to do it a guy in 2000 and in 2009.
Nobody thought Republicans and win the majority this far out from the election of in 2011.
People thought President Obama would never get reelected wins with higher than -- Average unemployment.
There's absolutely have to do it in the best the best thing working for us is the Republican majority it's the wildly unpopular majority.
That has approval rating that's that's lower than headlights.
That gives a real stark comparison for voters and we believe that if that continues.
That's where our path lives are really speak about headlights all the time.
They're they're just trying to get yeah they are more popular than biggest -- actually got something doors were organized John -- exit changes.
You guys say no chance.
No chance listen you know Chris we have great opportunities and a lot of -- there about fifteen Democrats and Republican seats right now -- a great effort TV we grow our house majority we have the -- house majority since court two so we feel really -- that the man has on our -- Don't -- I think desolate area that -- -- have a smaller plane field this time going around so we're gonna have to.
More money in and -- races and we feel like we have a great opportunity to even grow our house majority come November.
I know Jesse -- good outweigh that.
Redistricting has changed things in America.
The places where you guys -- trying to play offense are mostly Romney.
Romney kind of places right you're trying to go you're trying to you're trying to take off -- where Republicans are sort of holding in blue territory.
Not necessarily we have -- sixteen districts we need seventeen there's sixteen districts today that a Republican holds.
That President Obama won in 2012 -- there's another twenty districts the president of the.
-- wouldn't nearly one that would -- like Paul -- Yeah yeah absolutely okay -- -- get him we're gonna go after.
-- -- Now to Jesse's point -- Andrea.
Do Republicans are not popular in congress in general and we talked about this on Friday that.
Congress in general is not popular.
But among the unpopularity.
Democrats are slightly less unpopular there.
Then -- Republican members of congress.
It isn't there a danger for you guys that if another another year of fighting with President Obama people get frustrated and say threw -- Listen every you know everyone might -- Paris that they love their -- man -- -- so -- -- you know bill still very good about where -- house majority is you know I think that the -- -- house Democrats face is they need to go after districts Arab publication nature when -- have -- -- -- liberal harassment -- you know Democrat minority in congress and that's a liberal president.
On top of the -- who's who's pushing things like climate change and that kind of stuff so when -- re hauling coal country and the president is it is putting forth these.
Policies that are going to be a devastating the coal industry here -- have a hard time defending.
He's got to spend a lot of time with Barack Obama I would say over the next year well one of the things that's in those same polls that show the Republican majority -- popular is the issues in the image of the Republican Party.
You know one poll showed two thirds of voters think they're too extreme 50% think they're looking out for the rich gallop today.
Says that the number one critique of the Republican majority is that -- inflexible and uncompromising.
Those sound like things that voters don't want it's not just the unpopularity.
It's the beliefs that voters have about this Republican majority which makes -- fun and.
-- the -- these the contours of the elections the election process that Internet and what have you guys back over the next year to talk about this and do this because you guys doesn't seem to be a good Internet television.
Let's let's get it done -- exactly let's deal with the specific.
And the specific here is in South Carolina which is kind of -- Republican place.
You have Mark Sanford heading into a runoff election.
Now your team has already picked.
Elizabeth colder bush -- over bush and adults they called bear her brother even cold -- And she says Colbert -- -- -- she's in South Carolina he's in New York.
Do you guys really think that she's -- democratic polling firm apple that showed her beating Mark Sanford you guys think you can.
I want -- know a lot more after the runoff tomorrow -- this is a seat that.
Didn't vote for President Obama it's exactly the -- the -- that that he'd be just talked about.
And it's a seat that Republicans shouldn't have to defend -- they're on defense in.
They've got to choose between a candidate that.
Is unacceptable to voters they are on on values issues or somebody that's unacceptable to voters -- on ideological issues that matter -- middle class is about -- -- Mark -- or or mr.
-- either of them are unacceptable to have to voters there and we've got a candidate who is a small businesswoman.
Who's not focused on either party and is just focused on getting the job done in and creating jobs.
And that's a powerful contrasts in his district that never should be competitive you can tell us we'll tell him it would you want to win.
Tell us and.
Even -- -- people feeling you know Republican voters that decide tomorrow and -- respect their wishes that listen you know specials -- house press Alexis -- I mean it isn't Jason points out and we could have predicted alien and -- Hollywood celebrity in their race.
But you know I don't know we -- to say about that but on yeah I think once voters learn more about Elizabeth they're gonna finance and they don't like her that her campaign is being funded by the -- median.
That closed only creating jobs in South Carolina -- machines backs that I.
-- Mark Sanford -- you guys have trouble.
Now I don't -- So upset that we got you got an Internet you've heard from them but we thank you -- generously making your social Easter time available to us.
We're gonna talk more about -- can't collecting when we come back because John Roberts will join us and we will talk about the additional role that south Carolina's playing the immigration debate and a lot else inside the Republican Party.
So stick around.
And those are two South Carolina politicians right there that's Lindsey Graham he's a senator.
And that's straight -- he's a member of the United States -- happens to sit atop a very key committee in this is our life South Carolina.
Is not usually a major player when it comes to national political discourse -- its -- every four years to be king maker.
In the presidential primary process but when it comes to immigration it could be a big deal.
You know who knows about that.
John Roberts who joins us from our Atlanta bureau who's been checking it out brother Roberts welcome back.
Good to see -- senator Lindsey Graham and congressman -- got it right over here and they will play.
Both of them an integral part in any immigration reform deal of course senator Graham.
A member of the -- the gang of -- and congressman Gatti is the chairman of the immigration subcommittee.
In the house both of them say Chris now is the time.
To do something about immigration reform senator Graham says to get nearly twelve million people in this country illegally we need to figure out that piece of -- Congressman Gabby says he wants this to be the last time that the United States has to deal with immigration reform in his lifetime in both of them say.
In states like South Carolina where you've got a big agribusiness you -- tourism huge service industry -- need that pool of immigrant workers because.
According to senator Graham -- talk to us about this.
These employers are out there offering jobs and -- -- going wanting nobody wants to sign up for these jobs but there are other groups who say whoa whoa -- Not so fast remember numbers USA.
Roy -- 2007.
They played a key role in killing the immigration deal that Graham and John McCain we're talking about what they're back again.
They're running ads against senator Graham there also groups who were targeting congressman -- is well and they're saying look at.
Always Americans who can't find work why are we giving as they call it amnesty to illegal immigrants and letting them keep these jobs.
So they have made South Carolina which has no really inherent kind of immigration.
Base to it it's not a border state like Texas or California or Arizona or New Mexico but it does require.
To a greater degree on or rely -- greater degree on immigrant workers and it is one of the fastest growing immigrant populations.
In the nation.
And it's a very very conservative state as you pointed out so if immigration reform can gain support in South Carolina.
Senator Graham and -- -- -- that maybe that's the way the rest of the country we'll go.
Numbers USA which is about 250000 volunteers say we're gonna light a thousand grassroots fires against this.
We're gonna try to kill in South Carolina and send a signal to lawmakers and other parts of the country that.
You don't want to mess with that you don't want to touch it they think they can win the argument senator Graham congressman -- -- their argument will prevail.
They say that all politics is local and that's true utility it is national and that's what John Roberts -- told you.
John happy belated Easter thanks for making time for us today.
That degree of same -- always good to be -- Okay our Internet you know what you like wolf first of all you like following me you better like following me antsy -- on Twitter -- -- you and you now more than ever.
But yes she probably gets you -- you minority -- my column for the day you very intuitive you can have had a cup of coffee and mused.
But what else -- -- things that are special.
You like things that are special.
And something that special is that today.
Jonathan Hunt is on the hunt lions from Bill -- New Jersey for a full hour starting at noon today.
Tell you -- other hard hit areas recovering from Jerusalem standing.
Brother -- How we -- it how's it looking out there.
Hey Chris you know thirty billion dollars worth of damage was done across in the state.
All -- New Jersey in the wake of super storms Saturday.
So many of the worst hit communities were right here on the edge of the Atlantic Belmont New Jersey has so -- board ruled.
Completely destroyed businesses.
Hundreds all of them completely destroyed.
Homes completely destroyed since then we on that five months on from out of -- about dreadful day October 20 ninth.
The communities and the individuals here.
Have been busy rebuilding as -- they -- because of these.
Communities -- Salma is crucial so many of those businesses makes.
So much of that annual income from Memorial Day to Labor Day they simply.
Have to be back up and running -- -- hotter.
-- long for so.
Many of them and we will have some extraordinary stories of the human spirit coming up in the next hour live here from Belmont -- -- We'll also be talking to the -- Belmont Matt -- About how the city is improving you can see behind me and -- -- the work on the border wall here.
Pretty -- that -- the company that is rebuilding this portal has been given until April 30.
To get it done if it's not Don might end some pretty heavy penalties are gonna -- kicking in they want to Belmont to be ready like all of these towns up and down in New Jersey shall.
They wanna make some 2013.
Not just a summer of recovery but in fact the best -- up.
They've ever had will get a handle all of that in a special edition of on the hunt.
-- -- -- After a thirty minutes of Washington news has -- spirited the Internet.
Your stories will lift them back up so that is a good thing thanks -- I'll be watching.
So it's Monday.
So there's -- terms that unit you knew that coming in here.
That's okay because we have some.
-- -- to power points today and today's power points.
Hockey getting cocky that's what.
Social liberals are doing right now after twenty years in the ideological closet Democrats having -- so many issues near and dear to the left.
Gay rights including gun control.
Things that had to do with feminism things that had to do with environmentalists and -- -- to the back is Democrats -- back.
From a painful.
Fifteen years or so where things didn't go so well for them on the national level -- now.
They're back -- think that things are going their way they're pushing hard.
So here's your first PowerPoint Easter -- Now the preacher at church where the president is handling with Easter services reverend Leon.
Little overboard -- -- in his Easter service in his Easter sermon and went on the attack he didn't just talk about what he believed he.
Sort of mischaracterized I guess but certainly attacked the views of other Christians who disagreed with him.
On subjects and accused them of favoring segregation.
Unequal treatment for women.
Homosexuals and other issues really came out hard with the president sitting right there in a church that presidents of the united states military since 1816.
So that's was probably did not probably enhance the Easter -- for the president.
Because now opens up these questions about is that -- you believe Mr.
President we'll see what they answered today but you're -- SharePoint superiority.
To get certitude.
Now what Republicans.
Have had plenty of episodes like this over the years but both parties are certainly victim to -- when you win an election if things are going well for you you believe that things will always be this way remember republicans' argument the McKinley majority.
That the -- would have a combination.
People who were concerned about national defense and national security moms combined with evangelicals and social conservatives to forge a lasting coalition for the Republican Party that would last for generations.
And lasted for about two years.
And so that's how that went but at the moment Republicans especially social conservatives were rich with certitude that they had the way forward -- that they were key.
To the future well it turned out not so because things changed economic conditions changed attitudes changed.
That's the deal here's your third PowerPoint.
Play the game with fear and trepidation that's what my dear old dad used to say about the game of golf.
When you are playing your best when you're doing your best you play the game with fear and trepidation you don't get overconfident you don't swing too hard you don't take shot chart not to -- -- take shots that.
You play with respect and you play carefully.
And in politics that's even truer than it is for golf so that's something -- liberals consider right now is engaged in this round of tribalism.
That we saw in reverend -- speak.
The nuclear power points hope they were food for your food for thought.
And it did not increase your question index thanks for being with the -- receive accurate.
