Thousands of men and women put their lives and on to defend America as you know and our freedoms yet there's an unacceptable backlog.
A veterans' claims for benefits is going to stagger you according to the center for investigative reporting thousands of hundreds of thousands of veterans are awaiting an average of 279.
Days for their benefits some of them suffering from life threatening illnesses along the way joining us right now.
Is John Davis director legislative programs for the fleet reserve association and retired US Marine Corps reserve.
And retired army National Guard lieutenant Davis welcome.
Thank you is this but is this situation getting worse.
That is getting worse and wanted to say the what the goal is is to have a disability claim.
Adjudicated and finished with -- 125 days and have 98% accuracy.
And as of January 2012 they had about 800000 claims and 60% of those were.
Over a 125 days and than just this last February.
They're over 900000 claims and that 70% of those are 125 days or older so there they're moving in the wrong direction.
So we have more guys in more women coming home to get -- these benefits.
What seems to be the problem by nature of the military are people they get things done they find a way what's going on when it comes to health benefits.
Well this is a major issue for our membership and our our national president mark Kilgore.
A recently testified for the senate veterans affairs committee on our issues of concern and this.
The backlog of claims was the number one issue and followed by Agent Orange as well which is sort of a related issue.
-- there's no quick fix.
And we are in dialog with the Department of Veterans Affairs on a fairly regular basis on trying to to deal with this problem.
And there there at least trying to make an effort they're not you know -- and it just overwhelm them.
They're dealing with such things as reforming the the process.
Trying to streamline the process.
We train people properly that are dealing with these claims and also.
Another big issue is technology which they still need to work on ally and the Teddy said to be a lot easier with the DOD they would just take it records we have Department of Defense -- -- -- immediately to the VA.
That would eliminate a lot of the problem.
Yet it's been a long.
Problem for many many years is that the DOD -- -- VA have different.
Systems and they they they're not compatible.
Which takes makes it very difficult for the that'd be disabled veteran when they go to get out of the military go to the VA to get.
You know this is a problem that needs to be dealt with right away and we are glad that there's that the department veterans affairs is it.
Do you know in contact with a talking about this problem and trying to help it.
But it's still you know it's going in the wrong direction while -- keep talking about it and try to pound this through and get a -- -- is only gonna get worse unless we do.
Let's say John Davis thanks so much.
