Consensus joined now for debate on all of those issues by Mario Lopez who is president -- Hispanic leadership fund and Christian Ramos who -- policy director.
With a 21 century border that initiative about -- let me come to you first have the personal thank you -- For being here I don't the Republicans really need a change here it appears -- getting one.
Perhaps -- the good people like senator Marco Rubio in the lead.
What is -- change that you believe Republicans.
Should seek and should do that all most to bring about.
Why I think the most important part of many -- immigration reform package not just for Republicans but for the country.
I think is really streamlining and reforming the legal immigration process a lot of people really don't understand how incredibly cumbersome.
And lengthy -- process it is it's a very bureaucratic it's big government at its worst frankly.
And so as as from a center right perspective.
I think it makes a lot of sense to make sure that the reforming that legal process is part of any reform that -- goes forward.
Hot -- could you would you would you agree that that is where we stopped first is is floating up the process.
I think that's absolutely correct and -- -- you have to start with an earned.
Pathway to citizenship.
We just -- -- poll that came out today that shows that eight in ten Americans support that when you throw in the border enforcement side of things that number gets even higher.
If you're looking at the senate I think -- not we're heading that way and that's up listening that's on the table over there and they're gonna work all that out.
The house is where I think this is actually really interesting area Raul Labrador.
One of the members negotiating all of this over there.
-- put out not bad recently which.
Established three ways of moving towards citizenship one for dreamers 14.
People who are working in businesses here one -- Families those are the same sort of visa situations and then the last one is our legal status -- -- -- doesn't fit into those two categories and I think.
As we go forward and negotiate all these things -- I think.
The -- pathway to citizenship is central to fixing our legal system -- -- and he's also incredibly incredibly popular with the American people.
-- -- -- does does some of this so a man to what is being eight dead he would for many conservatives amnesty.
And know frankly I mean when the amnesty is getting something for nothing.
And no one's arguing for that.
At least no one who's reasonable so I think that.
-- you know when you look at the conditions being place when you look it.
Things is you know simple things but important principles.
Like the fact that we should process all the folks you know all the citizenship applications for folks who have been in the process already.
Before we get to anyone.
Who has been here without status regardless of how long that maybe I think that's something that's tough but fair.
And we want to make sure that we're will were especially fair to those folks who have decided to to apply through the existing legal process.
Despite the fact of how cumbersome and and how incredibly.
Bureaucratic it is.
-- is -- notice all and everybody within this debate though and everybody making the decisions on this.
To put border security first as a lot of people particularly those living along that border would like to say.
Well look I would have to say first and foremost we made tremendous progress on the border.
It's safer travel trade and tourism -- up down there.
You're looking at a dynamic that is completely different than it was four years ago and I think what we're gonna see in the senate is -- gonna build upon those successes to make that better and I think that's not a horrible thing to do.
But again I have to go back to the fact that if we're gonna do that and we really got to concentrate on the legal.
Immigration system and that does start in hand with and -- pathway to citizenship.
And I think at the end of the day if you look at the political dimensions of this.
Legal status for a large number of people in this country -- doesn't solve the problem B is not particularly.
Popular with the Hispanic community and see is bad policy so I think.
All of those things come into play here and I think we are in a in a good place and we're moving the ball down the field.
Mario -- -- do we have do you see to to make border security.
Go hand in hand with the -- way to citizenship or whatever we want to two in the legal process.
Well I would call -- more of -- earn legal status rather than a direct pathway to citizenship but to answer your question.
Yes absolutely I mean they they have to go hand in hand the fact is that we used to have a guest worker program for example in this country in the fifties and sixties.
-- so big union labor bosses killed it is called the -- -- program.
And it allowed people to come in.
And it wasn't perfect but it allowed people to to come in and work for a set period of time.
And then go back -- guest workers and what happened was illegal crossings and leave apprehensions at the border dropped dramatically.
During the period of time because there was an actual legal way for people to come and work.
And what a lot of folks understand currently is that it's there is no real.
Direct -- suited to either come to work for certain period of time or just to immigrate legally to United States it's incredibly difficult.
So the more that we can focus on -- Giving folks that path and that opportunity to come legally the more that our Border Patrol and the resources that we have on the border can focus on.
The real bad guys the guys that are bringing you know maybe weapons or drugs or other unsavory things in.
Instead of focusing on on the folks who are actually coming with the intent of working.
All right gentlemen not great till June we will obviously revisit this debate -- committed to following it all the way through I here at foxnews.com.
And all non.
A great to have you both -- Christian -- policy director with the 21 century.
Border initiative and Mario Lopez president -- Hispanic leadership fund thank you both very much indeed gentlemen.
