-- new information out of North Korea as the Wall Street Journal reports a positive -- in our show for saying the United States is stepping back.
From a more aggressive stand that we seen over the last couple weeks out of concern it.
And made for prompt these this unpredictable country do something rash triggering an even bigger crisis which is something we now want to avoid joining us now.
Is Jim wash international security expert with the MIT security studies program Jim nice heavy back on the program.
Good to see you Jenna even in this conversation that we've had about North Korea over the last several weeks several weeks there are people that -- -- -- this is just North Korea being North Korea you say.
They're sending and precedent and we're seeing here.
What is it.
-- both the pace of events you know I've been sitting in this chair for like it seems like -- two weeks solid day after day.
-- talking to people about -- we've had the north Koreans do things that they've never done before we -- the United States doing things it's never done before.
Flying the B fifty twos.
The B twos.
You all across South Korea trying to send a message to the north as well as a message of reassurance to the self.
North Koreans re starting their new director pitches and none of this has involved something where anyone's directly poke someone which is the other thing that I think it's set off.
It's something small that would grow quite big quite quickly that would be my concern but no one has done that but just it's every today.
There's something else going on -- you refer to the report from the Wall Street Journal which is really impressive reporting.
That suggests that when good what else made a lot of these decisions and do all this stuff send you know very visible gestures in the region.
They are starting to pull back a little bit because they too -- concerned.
About what's gonna happen next so.
And you see it -- -- If I could we -- just we're showing some video it in the North Korea and North Korea's military one of the things that we consider viewers is North Korea shooting a target that says USA.
On the top of it how does the United States do the delicate dance have not provoking unnecessarily.
A country that's unpredictable but also not looking -- But you know that's -- that is -- walk and there's another element.
Also that you.
Want to reassure your treaty allies you want to reassure.
A South Korea want to reassure Japan that the US has -- back so you wanna be strong enough that you reassure.
But not so -- so over the line that the other -- freaks out and does something stupid I think that was the concern that North Korea might miscalculate.
And that's why we've hopefully we'll have a studying.
Over in this next period of time but you know tomorrow we could wake up and have a missile launch.
Missile test towards Japan and start all over.
How likely is that and why do you think Japan would be the direction where this test.
-- would do this test would be.
Well hi there are the reports today that they're moving a missile east.
And if you look at the map what's east you know what's faces the off the eastern coast of North Korea it's Japan.
Japan is another one of those countries because of the history of World War II the North Korea's used as a -- man you know to incite strong nationalist feelings.
So and again -- -- will be another one of these things that's provocative without actually doing anything to anyone -- a friend Roy -- Frankel.
Tells a story of a guy in -- -- in Korea.
Who -- a car accident.
And both drivers rush out of the car and they're shouting at each other and they bump bellies and they look like you're just about to fight and they stopped getting the cars and drive away.
And then he -- that sort of situation here but are we gonna go up to the edge bump bellies and then stop and drive away.
Or we'd been -- is gonna crossover into a fight.
A lot's been made -- this new leader in North Korea but we have some new leaders as loudly -- chuck stabilize the new Defense Secretary we have a new secretary of state in John Kerry.
What do you think is it in the top priority should be form for both of them and how they approach North Korea since you've spent some time next to him.
BI and I -- to say -- you're right to put your finger on that because.
We also have new leadership in North Korea a new president in South Korea and a new leader in China so lots of fresh faces on the job training you know I think they've handled it pretty well so far I'm not sure I would have gone with the B fifty twos in the B twos because that -- other repercussions.
But it I think you have to reassure your -- that's job one and then you have to restrain your ally so they don't do anything stupid we don't want South Korea.
To start something that drags us into -- war so reassurance and restraint.
Talking to the Chinese and and trying to turn the dial down trying to lower the temperature on this so people don't mess up.
Quick final question -- -- and he spent a lot of time also looking at Iran there's a whole lot of distraction happening in North Asia right now because of North Korea.
But -- Ron is still there in her behind still working with its nuclear program how much do you think this distraction in North Asia is and -- -- Our our dealings with Iran right now.
Well I grain gonna tell you have a crisis you tend to spend less time on other issues that's just the way it is but I will say at least what the -- and we have a set of partners the Europeans.
Who are also working this issue and in fact the negotiators are meeting today at the expert level there's a meeting today.
A between Iran and the who are managing this issue so I think that process is going to be OK you know the questions there whether -- a question -- -- whether it's gonna produce any thing.
But that that seems to keep ongoing you know that's probably someplace else and Africa or some place you and I can't even think of that's that -- something bad happening that we're not paying attention to because -- north Koreans are acting up so much.
And it seems to be the way you write something else pops up totally unexpected.
The way the world -- it's great to have your expertise and this is always look forward to having you back.
