Right now West Virginia police are investigating the murder of another law enforcement official in this country.
-- -- Eugene -- was gunned down in his parking lot where he eats lunch most days the sheriff who launched a campaign to crack down on drug trafficking.
Was killed near the site of a former pharmacy known for illegally distributing pills.
And while authorities haven't said yet whether his murder was related to his crack down on drugs many who live there a suspect there's a connection.
Comes death follows the killings of -- Texas district attorney his assistant DA and the Colorado prison chief.
Right now none of these crimes have been linked.
Jeff Lanza is retired FBI special agent no links yet Jeff but certainly the authorities are looking into the possibility right.
Well let's that they are -- looking into and there's a striking resemblance.
Between killings now that we've seen in Colorado in Texas and yesterday the unfortunate -- shooting West Virginia lots of law enforcement officers.
Are killed in the line of duty unfortunately every year in the United States about one a week on average but not like this John this is an ambush attack.
And possibly premeditated and -- it it bears a striking and disturbing resemblance.
To what we've seen in Texas and and in Colorado we've had attacks now.
On all three components of the criminal justice system corrections the judicial system.
And now law enforcement -- so no link says.
At least to this point as as you've mentioned but what about copycats.
The first thing investigators do whenever have a case like this that bears this type of resemblance that I mentioned.
Is look for a copycat motive motive and that would be in my mind that the most likely possibility here this person.
In West Virginia probably felt empowered them by what he saw in the news in the last couple of days and -- resemblance being of course that the sheriff.
Has been working to eradicate the drug problem in West Virginia as they were.
In in Texas and so that may be a motivation enough for this said the suspect in this case to have struck -- struck out at the sheriff.
Sitting in a -- car in this ambush attack.
It's kind of odd though as you've noted -- all components of the criminal justice system have come under attack here you have law enforcement.
-- of prosecution.
And you have corrections.
Absolutely it's this is highly unusual and and and and really is something we've never seen before totally and president and and whether they're connected or not I mean it's just it's crazy that this stuff.
Is allowed to go on and what's really which really crazy about it.
Is the fact.
That it doesn't need it's -- and goal if you -- these people are striking out because they they want to affect law enforcement's crackdown judicial crackdown.
On under drug trafficking is gonna have just the opposite effect they're gonna it's only get a -- -- their resilience and and make them what a push harder to put these people in jail.
So the reason for them doing it is it even Eden in -- and a couple logic.
The advantage in this case I guess is that they do have a suspect in in custody in connection with the sheriff's murder.
That is an advantage in that will certainly give them.
Leads in this case.
Because I would I would presume that person well that would provide them some information even if they're not talking they'll be able to figure out.
What cases the sheriff was working on.
In his past recent history where what -- he's actually made and what would have been specific motivation.
For this horrible and Lucia and the shooting yesterday.
Now the thirty year law enforcement veteran just seems like a great guy our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his loved ones.
Jeff Lanza formerly with the FBI thank you.
