Fox News alert out of Connecticut that state now boasting the nation's toughest gun restrictions.
This is video governor Dan Malloy moments ago signing the sweeping new gun limits into law.
That new law bans more than 100 types of firearms requires background checks on all gun purchases.
And bans the sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than ten rounds.
Some of those measures take effect immediately.
Lawmakers approve that sweeping legislation in response to the tragedy at sandy hook elementary school.
Many parents from -- have voiced support.
In favor of these controversial -- rules.
Joining -- now to discuss that Wayne Lapierre do you pick -- vice president and CEO of the National Rifle Association.
And so there at this and good support for this.
New set of laws in Connecticut it was not universal but many many of the new -- parents.
Got behind it Wayne and I want to ask you because.
CBS has released to us a sound -- on on sixty minutes they'll be airing some interviews with new town parents.
Who sat -- with Scott Kelly.
And this is in part to why they believe they they need these new laws and they want in particular.
The magazines and of the amount of ammo.
That you're allowed to carry around listen Rick Scott Kelly and a couple of the -- -- him.
The legislature has decided to limit the size of magazines in Connecticut to ten rounds.
The gunman -- sandy hook was using thirty round magazines.
Now I've heard the argument made.
You can change these magazine clips in these rifles in a matter of two seconds so what difference does it make.
Well I mean there was one instance where it wasn't two seconds and it allowed eleven kids -- -- a classroom tell me about that.
It's just the simple but -- content you have to change -- -- times instead of five times.
You have three times as many incidences where something could jam something to be Bobble.
You just increased the time for intervention increased the time frame with kids get out and there's eleven kids out there today.
That they're still running around on playground pretty much now lunchtime who escaped from his classroom right he.
Left the smaller capacity magazines at home that was a choice.
This year making news -- the larger capacity magazine clips and more lethal.
Powerful to listen to you know those families directive directly affected.
If Adam -- the shooter at new talent had not had thirty round magazine hey -- -- only had ten rounds and guns.
More children would've lived.
Well I think the problem what Connecticut did Megan is it the criminals -- drug dealers stated that the people there and do pour into there.
They are going to cooperate I mean all you're doing is make in the law books -- for the law abiding people and I mean from the very start.
My thought has been how little -- -- -- -- actually keeping kids safe and how much it has to do with his decade long.
Agenda against firearms that that.
The political -- some of the political class in the media have had what NRA is focused on is what we actually believe will make people safe.
Which is if you're gonna stop something horrible and happiness school.
Put police officers are certified armed security and every school.
Fix the broken mental health system that's broken from one end to this country to the other and a third thing.
One gun or one round in the hand of a criminal.
Or somebody mentally dangerous is too many and we need to get that person off the street interdict them incarcerate him if they're criminals.
Before they get their -- trying to see if they're mentally defective.
Intercept them and get him off the street and get him into treatment and that's what the NRA is financing aren't -- -- -- actual war.
I I appreciate that Anderson you articulate your position well but I if I could circle you back to that you know because if there's anything that moves people in this country.
Or has -- move them in one direction or the other recently is that new town tragedy.
And you hear the parents and the spouses of those killed are twenty children in six adults killed.
Eleven children have the chance to escape as that guy really loaded.
And they in their father that the one -- saying there if you had to re -- five times instead of one time.
How many more lives would of and saved that that is.
To me the most compelling argument it's been that is it that is revealed in the most compelling way anyone has yet revealed the argument for.
The that this limitation on panel and a lot of get your response.
Well Lamar responses that the criminals -- gonna have less one round and they hand that's of some of -- than do war is too many how do you know when and and -- advantage what just about giving you are promised back.
Adam -- you know.
His mother was a legal gun owner and how do you know that this person that his mother would not have -- the law and limited the magazine clip.
And then -- -- would have been limited to ten rounds instead -- thirty.
-- you could people that no guns you can change magazine clips in a second there's no evidence that that you know it did admit that anything would have changed I'm in the fact is if you're a homeowner though.
And you have someone coming through your door in the middle of the night.
Why should you be limited to three rounds or four rounds like Mayor Bloomberg wants to do what I'm -- fact is the criminals are going to be limited people want.
Magazines for the same reason.
Seventeen round magazines that -- protect Capitol Hill there's -- you you may need him for protection if something horrible is happening.
Most robberies involve more our our third of robberies involve multiple intruders.
And it -- people want him for the same reason.
Police want on the same reason the Capitol Hill is protected by -- is is.
If you why should you be limited to some what some what some politician believes is reasonable well.
How I do -- -- tell the viewers that that the near times was reporting based on interviews with the parents that officials have said he fired it lands 154 shots at about four minutes.
And that the parents claim that they have been told.
-- in the time it took him to reload and one of the -- eleven children were able to escape so that's it from what we -- -- where I'm getting my information from but I understand your I understand your counterpoint wane and that and that's.
When I was looking for the viewers will decide on that I want to ask is a -- we wanna get their.
Universal -- background checks and we're coming up against our breaks we'll carry you over but universal background checks -- Fox News poll 85% of the American people support it.
Including 81% of homes with gun owners in them.
I mean look at the look at across the partisan divide that it is -- a democrats' favorite 83% Republicans 82% of independents.
Why don't you favorite -- We supported the check on retail sales it we were promised it would be fair instant accurate.
It's none of those there all kinds of delays.
The mental health records and not in the system nobody's prosecuted it turns out to be a speed bump for the law abiding people.
Now what they want to do is take this extended to a hundred million law abiding gun owners.
Think it went hazard and I my apologies to the heart rate but I'll carry level to get up.
It's a hard breaks Wayne Lapierre is back with me now thank you surfer waiting with us in LA finish your point about the universal background checks.
Well -- the whole thing it's -- dishonest premise because criminals aren't going to be checked.
And the mental health records the badlands is the Loughner is the James -- and a roar they -- going to be in the system either so it's going to be you and me.
The drug gangs these people that -- all cut all kinds of horrible things that are gonna say hey let's -- -- -- Wal-Mart let's -- the police station.
Let's fill out the forms let's pay the fees lets put our name in that system.
It's not gonna happen you're gonna end up with with a hundred million law abiding people.
Paying taxes being inconvenienced.
Affecting no criminal simply lining up all the good people and putting their name in a registry.
And when once people find that out they go -- not in favor of that I -- present Obama out there on the campaign trail.
Everybody ought to hold up a sign that says nine deep because if he really really wanted to make a difference.
Chicago wouldn't be ninetieth nine.
Chicago is dead last in the United States that case the president keeps talking about that -- young girl that was killed.
That guy had been picked up on a gun charge that gang member put out on the street on probation.
Had been re arrested three times for break ends.
And for trust passing and still left on the streets and was never prosecuted under federal law at all there's there's no question the -- -- -- gun law enforcement is extremely.
Wanting I wanna run that another point -- speaking -- President Obama because he -- in Colorado yesterday which is also just passed tough gun control measures.
And and said that that the opponents of some of these quote common sense laws have ginned up fears.
And it and it feeds into this suspicion.
About government and then he went on to say -- swing.
You hear some of these quotes I -- -- got protect myself from the government.
We can't do.
Background checks because.
The government's got to come take my guns away.
The government's us.
The -- Officials are elected by you know.
They are elected by you I am elected by you I'm constrained.
As they are constrained.
By a system that our founders put.
Your thoughts on that.
Yeah this is somebody that handed out flyers this campaign get around the country -- and he's a strong support of the Second Amendment he said personally -- never -- -- -- your rifle shotgun and handgun.
And net before the campaign and now it's trying to ban all parade.
I mean ask believe ask the American public did believe promises from politicians in this town Washington DC right now.
Is a pretty tall order -- if they -- her registry of all the law abiding people I watched those politicians break their promise in the United Kingdom.
And I bet they do it here.
But thought they really need to do is fix a mental health system in force the federal gun laws and put school security and there.
There will actually protect people and let's start doing things that actually make people safer in this country we're not -- But for LA go -- -- you stick -- heat over the past few months for that remark he made in the wake of Newtown in some of the -- -- families were second they got robo calls in Connecticut.
From the NRA shortly after actually recently it was I think in March and they thought it was and -- well.
Just recently -- regard this legislation that was in Connecticut that we believe.
Only affects the law abiding people it -- it lines up all -- Eric.
Let god tell Wayne I mean you're -- regret the -- -- of the new account families are you regret anything about your tone in the immediate wake of the -- -- -- -- and I think guard tone was what makes America say if we're saying it louder than anybody enforce the federal gun laws are not doing it put.
Armed security in the schools.
Fix a mental health system.
The media -- they may not like it they're screaming to the rafters for all this gun ban agenda.
I think the American public is seeing through it and say I don't want that imposed on me.
I want those politicians to.
-- everything that happened might have been stopped.
But for deficiencies in the mental health system in the criminal justice system let's fix those and let's put school security on top of it.
And make people safe.
That we have -- -- thank you so much I appreciate being here.
Thanks -- get all of entrapment.
