In a new op Ed that today she talks about the need for patience and determination urging people to support gun control measures but she concedes.
Waiting is difficult here's what she writes quote lately.
I'm not feeling too patient toward senators and representatives who were listening to the misinformation that's out there and that universal background checks instead of to the constituents.
In saying they may not support common sense solutions to ending gun violence.
Giffords of course were shot in the head just over two years ago and at congressional.
The NRA's school safety task force former congressman -- Hutchinson says.
It would be impossible for the government to prevent all societal violence Hutchinson says we should focus on keeping kids safe he was on.
FOX News Sunday with Chris Wallace today and you could see that interview immediately following America's News HQ today.
As congress debates new gun control measures the Washington Post writes that the NRA is chipping away at support for more restrictions.
Even senate Democrats are -- the powerful gun -- difficult to resist radio show host and Fox News contributors Mike Gallagher and -- Marshall here.
For a fair and balanced -- good to see you folks and let's -- let's start -- I view.
Washington Post and -- headline yesterday said the NRA is winning the gun control debate isn't and is that a bad thing.
All I don't think if you look at the polls latest 90% of the American people.
Who favor background checks and we look at the polls at various states including the one I'm sitting in.
That are moving four or Connecticut that have already passed tougher gun control measures.
That's not what the people are saying.
Now I know in the past my -- and his buddies kinda got confused as to the GOP constituency verses.
They -- -- a Grover Norquist being the leader now that's out after November now with the -- re.
But when I'm perplexed by John -- I grew up in Massachusetts.
That for years when I lived there had one out and continues to have one of the toughest gun control measures and the NRA remain silent.
Connecticut had a weapons ban in place for agents and the NRA remain flat this is very political.
Since new talent.
And and I think it's a -- as what we as a nation should be about politics there's really should be about.
Where can we agree to make this nation safer for the people and especially our children Michael -- -- cannot.
Well of course a funny thing happened on the way to the Leslie's Powell's trying to restrict Americans constitutional right to keep and bear arms and Leslie -- thanks for under explaining that you grow from Massachusetts.
Now it all comes to get -- apple I get it but I -- -- I'm kidding but seriously there -- there is an audio clip by play on my radio show John all the time.
From Rahm Emanuel you know profile president Bruce former guru.
And he said that you that you never let a crisis go to waste he said what I mean by that is you you always take a crisis and try to turn it into something that you could maybe affect change with that you nor ordinarily couldn't do it I think Americans saw right through what the left tried to do with Newtown.
The Americans were appalled.
The Democrats tried to manipulate.
Americans' emotions into thinking that new town is the is the breakthrough -- catastrophe that will take aways Americans rights to keep and bear arms we don't want gun restrictions one of the mistakes that I think we make John.
You talked about it in the open about the NRA and the NRA.
You know that -- listen.
The gun lobby the American people.
The NRA the American people is the gun lobby Americans don't want their Second Amendment tampered with and Americans hold very very very strongly to the belief that we have a a right to keep and bear arms now we need a reasonable response to what has happened in places like Newtown and to Gabby Giffords and those who were killed.
Nothing that's on the table is reasonable because everybody knows and Leslie you didn't -- none of the restrictions in place today that the senate is now debating would have stopped new town not -- -- -- -- -- -- look look at what did you.
For second -- and and go to this idea of of universal background checks because that appears to be the only thing that may survive in the senate looks like the assault weapons ban is dead.
Looks like limiting the size of magazines is is his -- as well and I wanna come back -- that Gabriel Giffords op Ed that was published at least of the New York Daily News today she say quote.
Determination guides me every day we need to be determined to determined to pass background checks legislation.
To make it harder for criminals and the dangerously mentally ill to get deadly weapons.
In the first place she is a gun owners she is not afraid of universal background checks why should anyone else.
Well and I'm not either John in -- -- break ranks with a lot of people on my side of the aisle I I understand that I think that is what really strong restriction.
The problem is that -- -- for a lot of people were frustrated because on the left because they want more they wanna -- they want to limit how many how big the magazines are you go -- we would have said Michael all of that appears to be -- let me -- -- -- -- the big worry.
Among gun owners at least lot that I talk -- -- this idea of the federal gun registry.
Is there anything in the legislation in congress.
That could lead us down that room.
Now because first of all it's illegal to have a national gun registry.
But secondly we have to look at history in some things that have been down I want to give you one example.
Broke up I massive.
-- gun trafficking ring that was going from the state of Virginia to the State of New York.
They could not have done that with -- being able to see who registered the guns who was selling it -- took home.
We are talking about safety.
This is not violating the Second Amendment.
You know what when I go to the airport and they go through my bags I'm not worried because a lot of terrorist bringing something bad on the plane so my -- -- when we go to what would a person goes to a private gun show.
What a person is a buying a gun and they a collector's.
You know loved us children somebody's home worst in as well as -- gun show this is common sense we want everybody if I have nothing to hide why should that we have a background check on its Michael you admitted you were not worried that any drug that that have to be addressed.
Okay thirty seconds I happen to agree I think that's a reasonable response quite frankly I understand the concerns but what -- what we don't like.
Is this this this penchant for slippery slope.
Make no mistake Liberal Democrats are frustrated they want -- much more they didn't get it at the end of the day the American people have spoken -- that the demonization of the NRA didn't work all the empty rhetoric failed.
And and ultimately we're gonna get to keep and bear arms and that's that's what the constitutional second that's what it's -- about -- Mike -- let me ask you for -- -- yes or no answer here so if if congress comes -- of legislation provided for universal background -- with an absolute guarantee.
That there will be no federal gun registry could you support that yes absolutely all right Mike Gallagher Leslie Marshall.
Thanks for joining us guys we found -- common ground to.
