They say he's barricaded himself inside a home.
The standoff in a small town of swami about forty miles north and east of Atlanta.
Investigators -- -- firefighters responded to an emergency call but while those firefighters were inside the home the suspect reportedly pulled a gun.
A source tells fox that the suspect may be upset because he's home maybe in foreclosure.
And that the utilities may be cut off now initially this man was holding -- five hostages.
But the suspect reportedly let one firefighter go so he could go move his fire truck about an hour authorities explain the whole thing.
Firefighters are trying -- Battle blazes they're trying to provide basic and advanced life support -- when we leave situations like this up to the officials and law enforcement.
Again when we know that there's potential for a violent situation to occur we do stage and wait for police.
To arrive at the scene and give us an indication that it's okay to -- there.
But again there was no indication that this call had anything other than a typical medical emergency.
With a patient who's in need of care.
And those firefighters -- -- to provide that -- And now four of them held hostage it appears at least at this moment nobody's been hurt police have not yet spoken about any possible motive.
Let's get right to work of fox station the GA reporter Doug Evans from fox five for the Atlanta area on -- -- Doug what do we know.
Well -- you're absolutely right there seems to be some indication that this man may have been in some sort of financial distress before all of this took place this afternoon.
-- Gwinnett county police say they know absolutely why this is going on.
But they're holding tight lipped about that right now they say they want to make sure that their firefighters are safe before they release.
Any information on the gunman or what his motive might be.
As you said.
This -- -- -- is about forty miles northeast of Atlanta it's in Gwinnett County Gwinnett County is one of the biggest counties that make up metro Atlanta.
There's police departments very good this fire departments very good -- swat team very good.
So there in their right now trying to negotiate with this man they say they had been in contact with them.
I get a sense from talking with them that they feel pretty good about.
The way everything is laying out so far.
But they are being very cautious they asked the news helicopters to back off which we did.
They've asked us not to release any information about the man which we haven't.
And so they have not updated us for some time yet but that it was a basic information as about an hour ago.
Let me -- -- lay it out to you right now and we'll show you this scene -- this is the walnut grove at Richland subdivision is -- Taylor wrote in -- -- was here about 340 this afternoon.
That -- that county firefighters responded to a medical emergency.
-- it was a routine call this is a cold that they respond to.
Hundreds of times a week in this very large county.
Five firefighters arrive at the house they go inside.
A neighbor who saw them go inside a neighbor who saw the man just minutes before he took those firefighter hostage.
Said that the guy appeared absolutely normal -- no indication of what was about to go down the firefighters we hear from the fire department.
They had no clue that they were walking into danger of course these guys are highly trained -- -- danger when they see it.
They respond to all kinds of major fires in this very large area they go into the house.
And then the guy pulls the gun -- they radio back in saying that that they're being held hostage.
He did allow one person to come out that was two a firefighter came out to remove the truck and the police department has talked to them and has.
Assured the police department and the fire department that the -- for firefighters still inside.
Are doing OK that they are safe so far and that's the promise that they have.
And -- motivation that they have to continue to talk with this guy to keeping calm down.
And try to bring this to some sort of resolution -- you can imagine this subdivision here is completely blocked off right now.
Some people have been evacuated some people are.
Inside their homes not able to get off out -- -- bring in Stephen Hayes whose girlfriend is inside here now.
Steven you've talked to -- what is she telling you about what's going on inside.
My fiance semi some photos around 430 and said that -- was here and -- soft side came right home from work.
And sure enough the whole neighborhood was blocked off you because you -- end.
She said that there are snipers and and and there a couple dogs I hear stuff like that and it this shocking.
What what did those photographs show you mean you saw them describe what you saw.
I mean -- there's cars everywhere.
There's an -- the cops are right.
Pretty much in our driveway dissolve you know kind based out right there -- use our bathroom.
And there is.
I'm sure that your concern for your fiance but he also one sure very concerned these four firefighters as -- -- somebody who protects your community what it.
You know was your best wish for these guys that are and I hope I really hope they get out safely you know hopefully the -- -- down situation goes away.
-- I know my fiance save this planet cops here.
And they're all around the house I do feel comfortable with them right now but hopefully the firefighters and everything and and -- good.
Steven -- his fiancee is inside we appreciate you joining us thanks very much.
To show up right now they're just in the stage where they're trying to negotiate with this guy.
Find out what it's gonna take to getting outside.
Find out what it's gonna take to get into release those firefighters to Doug if they had any contact with the firefighters themselves.
Doug can hear me.
Apparently we've we've lost communication -- there will reestablish that communication I can give you a little bit more information here.
The Atlanta journal constitution newspapers covering this and -- -- reporting.
That the only vehicle allowed in and out of there outside of you know official vehicles police and fire in the rest.
Has been a Comcast cable truck.
It was allowed in just about close to an hour ago now -- the reporting of the paper.
And that's possibly to cut cable to the -- Port Authority said earlier that they were concerned about what the -- may be seeing or hearing on the news.
So it's our belief at least that he does not that have access to the news at least on television at this moment.
A spokesperson says quote this is a very touchy situation anything could happen at this point so we've got to try to keep him call.
Today at the news choppers out of the -- the police on the ground or in some sort of discussions with him it's we're led to believe.
But they're not letting much information out -- That are the thinking is they don't want to -- this man but the situation is a difficult one with four firefighters being held hostage.
Inside there and we've reestablished communications with a reporter Doug Evans from fox five in Atlanta Doug.
Do we know if they've been able to speak with the firefighters themselves.
I don't know whether they've been able to speak with the firefighters all they will say ship is that they are in communication with the gunman who is holding them hostage.
That is a good sign any time that the police can communicate with this guy.
Can try to call -- down find out what it's going to take to in this situation.
Find out if there -- the needs of those firefighters inside give him some alternative.
To ending this on on what.
He might suppose -- his terms.
Of course it's all being orchestrated by the police department.
Would that -- he is a very large county.
This is probably one of the best police departments in metro Atlanta.
Hostage situations all the time these guys are well trained to do that.
I saw the district attorney for -- county Danny Porter arrive here a short time ago.
He's been in to talk with these guys that are handling the negotiations to try to help them along.
All right -- they don't really think I was curious about -- they had to have evacuated the areas around there they concern for others -- they just having them.
Shelter in place if you will.
Will I think -- that the people that are in there are sheltering in place to anyone who's been on the outside of this subdivision since 330 has not been allowed in and we can kinda give you an idea of what this looks like behind us I mean you're seeing.
You know -- the police cars there Lloyd if we can just kind of spin around and just show them what we've got here.
You know you've got the media camped out here of course but on the other side.
Of the streak here those are not only just curiosity seekers.
They are also people who can't get into their neighborhood tonight they're talking on cell phones to their loved ones inside.
They're getting pictures.
Sent to them of what they're seeing inside the neighborhood the reassuring them that their.
Okay you heard Stephen -- just a short time ago.
He didn't sound too concerned about his fiancee in their because she's surrounded with -- by police officers there in her house they're using her facilities.
So so he feels pretty good about her situation.
I have talked with another woman here.
Whose husband is just three doors down -- on he was asked to leave chose not to.
And stayed inside his house she's a little concern for him right now because of his proximity to this situation.
And he you know this is a guy who saw the gunman just a few minutes before he took these firefighters hostages.
And he told his his wife that he appeared absolutely normal that nothing.
Seemed out of the ordinary he didn't suspected anything was about to happen and nor did those firefighters as they walked into this huge mess.
Doug Evans from fox five Atlanta WP GA.
Great to have your eyes and ears on the scene I know others which they had similar will go back there for as news develops what we have now is.
Four firefighters in -- house held hostage by a man with a gun.
Authorities trying to talk the man with the gun down and keep these firefighters from being injured -- police helicopters out and they're not letting people in and out of the neighborhood.
