Where are we in all of a sudden it seems that we are getting closer and closer -- some sort of launch by the north Koreans is it important for us to stop that or to respond.
Off after it's happened.
Well I think it just sort I think it really depends on what the little -- for this launch as I'm very sure that it's going to be a test launch but as he said.
The missile could go off direction and so -- -- very much have to be prepared for in in that in that case I think I wanna emphasize to everyone that as you said.
This missile is not operational by any stretch of the imagination it has not been tested.
And for it to be achieving come close a place like Guam or read any accuracy whatsoever it's gonna have to go -- a number of tasks and I know your viewers are concerned.
To some degree we aren't concerned about whether this thing has the capability of holding a nuclear warhead.
There's -- be we've North Korea has not perfected that type of miniaturization at this point and an even if it has miniaturized they're going to be a lot more tests that are going to be necessary for it to go on top of that missile and to be delivered with any kind of accuracy.
So I think right now that's the we just -- -- -- I think it doesn't make sense for us to go after this on the ground that's very provocative.
-- if it's a task I suspect we probably won't do anything if it's harmless but if it does veer off course I think we're prepared and ready to deal with that when we have to.
And -- we have the capability we we put these two destroyers in the region in the western Pacific as the as officials will only refer to as on a missile.
Defense mission that they've admitted we have the ability to shoot down anything that's flying over any kind of distance do we not -- -- Well we have as limited ability the aegis destroyers we have -- okay is we have that ability there's the the -- missile defense system that's been deployed to Guam.
That in a tough situation.
Has has has a relative has shown some accuracy but we don't know necessarily what it's like on a long range.
Longer range missile the kind of accuracy that.
Think people -- depending upon so.
This is still we have not been able to do this and actual sort of real conditions -- just got to see what what what what kind of accuracy there is some sort of.
What what do we do next -- -- as if if Kim Jong-un is going to back Koppel all the woods we've heard from him.
It may well be that over this weekend -- perhaps in the early hours of Monday morning which would be the 100 in the first anniversary of the birth of the founder of North Korea -- -- condones grandfather.
If they fire a missile then -- -- -- test missile lands in the ocean what are we gonna do we just let them get away with -- do we have to take some sort of action.
-- of that action by them.
Well I think -- will probably are doing is going probably do we have to respond we have to go back and I suspect will happen is that there'll be another set of UN resolutions.
Related to that I think Jonathan is really important that we go back and look at the big you figure picture here what why this is happening right now.
First there is clearly domestic purpose for -- North Korea doing this can -- and his relatively young.
In a Confucian society that respects age he has to establish his bona TDs and what better way than to stand down with United States.
And -- to some degree -- concerned about.
His consolidation of power what better way.
Then two consolidate power under I can exert control when your risks country is in the state of war quote unquote.
The second thing is an international.
Component to this they want north -- trying to extract benefits are trying to compel us to give them benefits.
And I think that this is also a test of the international community we have new governments in South Korea China Japan and in new security team in the United States.
Kim Jong-un wants to see how we respond what is our resolve under increasing pressure.
They are probing us and we have to respond firmly and kind.
And finally I think that they are creating a pretext for justifying their missile and their nuclear weapons program.
And and so by putting us under war footing by ratcheting up pressure by showing the kinds of things that the -- looking at the escalation that's going on they're justifying their continuance.
A nuclear weapons program.
-- fun finally kind of a -- let you go do you believe firmly believe that we don't -- likely to see.
A missile test -- over the next few days and secondly.
Is Kim Jong-Il and -- himself making that decision or other generals making that decision for him.
Well I I do think we're probably it's highly likely I'd say 75 to 80% there's going to be some missile test that's what it looks like.
Whether Kim -- that is actually making decisions.
It appears to be so but I'm less certain about that when it comes to internal dynamics and politics of what's going on in North Korea it's speculation.
And so that's how I would -- at this point it looks like he is.
But it's we just need more information and that's the problem right now we just haven't had a lot of contact.
With this new leader or have seen a lot of his actions or.
-- over a period of time.
