The cure for lower back pain could be as simple as one single shot.
That's what some researchers are now saying -- was back pain especially lower back pain can be agonizing sometimes really debilitating.
Doctors report that each year it -- half of all American workers who treated -- all sorts of painkillers and therapies even surgery.
But in of new study at the Colombian international pain center in Missouri.
Doctors say they've harvested.
Bone marrow from patients and then they re injected into their spines.
The mayor is rich in stem cells of course doctors stress this is still only an an experimental stage.
But they say none of the patients reported an increase in pain after the procedure.
The stuff from the university hospital in Cleveland actually to make David doc -- nice to see you thank you.
Hi my dad is is in and lots of lower back pain and he can't figure out what to do with -- that -- first reading this I'm like wow.
But maybe not.
Maybe not 22 patients.
That tell the whole story I guess.
Well it is more than that okay.
I'm actually a pediatrician by training but my fellowship -- -- epidemiology and bio statistics so when -- look at a paper or report I look at it from that standpoint.
So there were 22 patients.
They didn't stratified -- mean they didn't say we're gonna have eleven men in eleven women were gonna have five people got.
Back pain for five years in five people -- back pain for one year.
They just -- it took the first trying to commerce.
And then they did bone marrow harvesting now that itself is not insignificant.
They take these -- that have a quick and they and going to your issue which is.
Your hip bone and -- -- out bone marrow so it's painful.
People tell you that when she -- a bone marrow harvest is kind of feels like having fallen off of sports and so I've never had that happen.
But I'm told that it's not without -- And then what they did was days but it down and they injected into the death.
Between -- -- vertebrae and some of the people got better.
And some of the people had no relief whatsoever.
So -- about 22 people.
It's not the gold standard the gold standard it's what's called -- randomized clinical trial.
So you would take one group of people.
And you would give them -- and you take another group of people and let's say you would inject something like sterile saline into the desk.
And then city to the people who have those but they're all it did they really do better than the people who just had the -- Maybe it's just having something injected into that -- Maybe it's what we call the placebo effect which means somebody did Sunday to you and so you feel better because something was done -- you.
-- this is kind of a buzz kill you're not usually a buzz -- -- All I -- I'm a scientist I wanna look at things scientifically.
The royal and sites as nearly as fun as this is -- headline on that thing I guess they they got a big had to do more trials as what you're saying before anybody ought to go out after this thing.
Well this is a very very very limited studies and they -- they're gonna have to write it up submitted to what's called -- peer reviewed journal.
They're gonna have -- people in their area who by that I mean area of expertise who look at how they did -- study what their findings were.
And then -- it comes out in a reputable peer reviewed journal will all read it and we'll all know that sounds right to me.
Good to see -- doc thank you.
