But the mother of a six year old boy who murdered and a new town shooting making a very emotional plea for new gun control laws.
During president Obama's weekly address Francine Wheeler.
Filling in for the president here's part of her message.
I've heard people say that the tidal wave of anguish -- country felt on 1214 has receded.
But not for -- To less.
It feels as if it happened just yesterday.
And in the four months since we lost our loved ones.
Thousands of other Americans have died at the and America.
Thousands of other families across the United States are also drowning in our -- Please help us do something.
Before our tragedy becomes -- or tragedy.
Former New York senator Al D'Amato is a Fox News contributor he joins us here on the set pleasure to see and the viewers here.
The president is utilizing the new town -- ways to make -- case for gun control.
But in some ways is he exploiting this tragedy in the grieving families for political purposes.
Well the answer -- yes it did but it is very effective.
And he's an unseemly.
Why China I don't believe it though yeah.
Not -- three year old and a five year old.
It's heart wrenching.
When when someone whose -- like this woman -- her six year old child comes on and says look you've got to do something.
And and and notwithstanding that I believe in the Second Amendment they lost things and legislation pending now they can and will make it -- For people who shouldn't get guns should get him it's not going to.
Correct goal of the problems.
And so it is a very effective political tool but -- striking is that there is no connection.
Between the legislation that is pending and the -- tragedies nothing in that legislation would have prevented what happened -- sandy remember -- when I -- It won't prevent everything but it will keep.
Lots of guns from getting into hands of people who shouldn't as easily as they now can.
You'll be you'll be able to keep criminals from going to a -- -- Buying them.
They won't be able to get them mentally disturbed people.
And it is a step in the right direction but those -- being sure that you will -- never have another tragedy like this of course.
Well option in the social media and the bloggers.
Are very critical of the president for what he's doing and funny quote syndicated columnist Jacob -- we'll put it up on the screen here Obama -- idea of rational debate.
Involves trotting out grieving parents and presenting -- pain.
As if it were an argument.
-- -- the point he's trying to make and others are making is -- -- these families are still very very emotionally vulnerable does it feel too soon.
To sort of -- engineering them for political purposes or outright manipulating them -- taking his stand on a vital constitutional right.
Well constitution -- I disagree with them and entirely.
The constitution doesn't say that the government doesn't have a right.
And keep up guns from being in the hands of certain individuals to to to have a right to them but it doesn't have the criminals have a right to -- that -- insane people have a right to himself.
There are certain provisions in the law that they're talking about -- that I think just make actual sense.
And at my colleagues who voted against those provisions I think I'm making a terrible tragic mistake.
And on bending to the pressure of the NRA.
And I play conservative.
I believe the person should have a right to all of a weapon but I also think -- candy should be background checks.
Are the midtown killer was mentally ill so too in Tucson in -- Colorado the other mass killings in many many others and yet.
Most of the legislation out there doesn't deal.
With mental illness well.
Again if you go to a gun show now there's no checks and if you are mentally ill and -- it checked it.
Demonstrate to -- it will stop that sale they won't stop -- proper or shop.
It mentally ill person from getting a gun.
That's their parents have in their home and then using that weapon.
That discipline and getting news is there any evidence that background checks thwart mass killings.
Well maybe not mass killings but they certainly have prevented killings that otherwise would have taken place.
There's absolutely no doubt about it the -- who make it for criminals and mention -- -- stable people would get the guns.
You know going to be reducing we know that.
You will be reducing the number of incidents that take place -- the president continues to call mass shootings routine that's his word routine and yet statistically we know they're quite rare.
Is that they are they are quite -- but they're so sensational president sort of -- enough.
False arguments and false evidence.
For his own political well certainly.
His purpose -- to get legislation passed and claim that even if it means.
Uttering -- cities.
Well even if it means exaggerations.
And then politic lies you tell yourself there's a fine line between lies and -- well it's it's it.
It is part of the political process.
As part of free speech.
You know you can -- say just about anything.
Faith accepting yelled fire in the -- a movie theater everything shorter that.
It's fair fair play it's a tough business what do you -- New York's.
Gun laws are in new socialist I've gone further there than the courts will permit hundreds yes I think it -- if certain aspects.
Question of the whether or not the federal government has -- right and whether the state is infringing.
As it relates to finish particularly as it relates to.
The number of -- should check your but I but I think in terms of registration.
It is the right thing I think it may be well intentioned.
But I think they're going to have trouble in a federal court justice -- famous Supreme Court Heller case there'd been more than eighty challenges to state laws on gun control measures not a single one of them.
I think in his station along may have gone further.
-- the court will permit.
-- -- -- this year's choice but let's do it here.
