Continuing coverage of breaking news terror attack at the Boston Marathon I'm Shepard Smith.
A White House spokesman says the explosions in Boston are quote clearly an act of terror.
Now from that same spokesman to learn whether the perpetrators -- domestic or foreign and whether those perpetrators are members of the terrorist organization.
-- those questions at this moment we have no answers.
Right now we're awaiting another briefing from officials in Boston with the very latest information it's scheduled to begin at this moment.
We'll take you there when it does here's what we know right now.
At least two people are confirmed dead seventy hurt after two bombs exploded near the finish line at the Boston Marathon.
One witness says he watched the trash can explode.
Here's video of the first bomb in the moments of chaos that follow.
And another camera captured the scene moments right after the first blast along with the second explosion.
Both blasts came just before 3 o'clock Boston time.
The last runners -- time in the marathon is listed officially at 2:57.
Then the second one went off just down the street from the first -- police say about 100 yards away he detonated.
Approximately twelve to fourteen seconds after the first.
People who they -- say they had no idea exactly what was happening.
We were coming down -- history.
And literally I heard and -- -- go off I saw a whole bunch of smoke and -- -- to the ground.
You know everybody started running and all of a sudden everyone all the runners -- and -- And so all calls and people running an address you start looking at altering injuries and you start to see people coming out.
Come with no legs.
People with no arms.
People faces and bodies covered in blood it.
A source tells Fox News that investigators in Boston are now.
Guarding whom a man they've called a person of interest guarding this person at a hospital and we do not know which one.
We're told that person has severe burns but investigators say they cannot determine with certainty whether he was a victim or an attacker again at this moment.
A person of interest in a hospital.
And police say nobody has been identified as a suspect.
In the last hour President Obama said the country will find out who did this and hold them accountable.
Here's another angle of the first explosion you can see one runner fall.
As the smoke billowed into the air.
Boston Police say there was also a fire at JFK library in -- Dorchester neighborhood.
But the police now say as of this moment there is no evidence to connect it to the bombings they think it was a fire and -- related they're still investigating.
Nobody was hurt in that fire.
Take a look at a map of the marathon -- announcing get a better sense of where all this happened the blasts again just a few hundred feet apart.
On patriots day in Boston.
When people were running the marathon families and friends cheering them on thousands packing the streets on a holiday there.
And in an instant.
The Fox Report -- correspondent Jonathan Hunt was on -- with us when this happened it has the latest information from our newsroom Jonathan.
Shaft first in the timing of this the last runners actually recording that work recorded crossing the finish line.
Were recorded at 2:57.
PM eastern time.
That gives you a pretty accurate picture of exactly when those two.
Explosions ripped through the scene 11 and then another a bad.
Fourteen seconds upon by our candles we listened to the explosions on the video that you -- now it appears according to all the experts that they were on some sort of timer device.
Now it could've been a time attached to each of those explosive devices but more likely according to the experts I've spoken to.
They were remotely detonated possibly using cell funds.
That is why we were told at the time that cell phone traffic have been shot down although a couple of the selvin.
Company said that they would not requested to do so but it appeared.
To a lot of people at cell phones have been blocked there was not a lot of structural damage these were not huge devices.
In that sense but they -- clearly able to do a lot have damage to the people many of them gathered that.
This was before our mock of the -- -- that's a typically busy time.
At the finish line -- there were a lot of people still crowded.
-- the finish line spectators and those who would already completed the race and with simply waiting for friends all relatives.
To come in now we have had some blood that the bombs may have been packed with -- ball bearings.
That is one of the things that does a great deal of damage to human flesh.
That would be why we -- -- in the reports of horrific injuries including many people losing their limbs and -- the investigation begins.
There are three basic questions here who did it.
How they did it.
Why they did -- the wall we know for short -- you look at the scene of the explosions again is two explosions.
Two people dead more than 100 wounded among them children who -- being taken by the parents to see a sporting event on this holiday in ball.
-- -- Jonathan WH DH television channel seven the NBC station in Boston is reporting that among the two confirmed dead.
Is an eight year old girl we can't independently confirm this and we haven't learned too much about the rest of the victims.
Yet we can't independently confirm that -- we haven't heard that report.
How we are also seeing reports from some of the local media that.
That the Children's Hospital in Boston that currently has seven patients it is -- from this we doesn't know.
The extent of their injuries there are reports of children at some of the all the hospitals involved -- and as they say a total we are told.
Of something like 105.
People not taken to the local hospitals as a result of this which just shows you.
The force of those explosions and what have -- shrapnel.
They will packed wind ripping through everybody who was -- in that area at that time -- Jonathan I mentioned at the top of this newscast -- waiting for briefing from officials in Boston as you can see it's that's the podium where they'll be speaking it was scheduled to begin at 7 o'clock.
So just about seven minutes ago now and we're expecting that should begin shortly in the meantime Jonathan.
But it became clear this afternoon when these were separate explosion -- we knew they were devices.
That this was what authorities and watch what the White House is now calling a terror attack the question is who.
And with what motivates you just said we don't yet have answers to any of that -- speculation has been rampant but nothing not nothing firm.
I don't know absolutely nothing nothing from a whatsoever and there are all these reports.
That a a person of interest.
May be being god -- by the Boston Police Department a -- one not all of the hospitals we do not -- have independent confirmation of who this person might be.
-- even whether it is a man or a woman at this point but obviously.
In -- idea every -- enforcement agency involved right -- That looking -- and what they'll be doing first is looking at the explosive devices they'll be taking them -- -- seeing how they will put together.
-- what materials they will put together.
That will give investigators a lot of clues remember when they look at these things they tend to see what they call a signature of a bomb maker.
That will lead them in one direction we'll find out in good time -- Jonathan thank you will be back to you as news warrants Catherine Herridge works intelligence forest.
In his live in our DC bureau Catherine it it it's my understanding that there are no.
Credible claims of responsibility here.
Well it's really been in touch with the various crew -- they make it their business to monitor these extremist web sites.
And so far there has been no claim of responsibility.
For what's happened in Boston I Johnson though is touching on an important point because -- forensic information.
This Boston Marathon is now a crime scene.
And -- told the FBI's focus is very much on taking the residue from these devices.
Identifying the explosive.
Then -- the origin of those explosives.
And then looking for that bomb maker's signature between these bomb makers makes these devices in a certain way.
The type of detonator and then specifically whether there was shrapnel a short time ago we heard from the head of the house homeland security committee Republican congressman Mike McCall.
Who confirmed that he is getting reports that the devices contained.
Ball bearings so shrapnel that is a critical marker here.
The other thing I would try your attention to is the fact that the explosions were nearly simultaneous.
And about fifty to a hundred yards apart.
What has the intention of at least one source is following the investigation.
Is that it is a standard practice to have that.
With the idea that you will dry if the public towards the -- secondary site.
Which is in fact larger device so that you can maximize the casualties.
In an event like this this is why people are discussing this as an act of terrorism first privately.
And now more publicly with administration officials a final point we just a confirmation in the last few minutes.
That the FBI.
As well as CN CTC this is the National Counterterrorism Center.
This is the group that was created after 9/11 to monitor threats against the United States will be briefing members of the House Intelligence Committee.
As early as tomorrow so with the timing tells you -- from my experience.
Is that this thing is really on fire and this is a pressing acted investigation.
If they're gonna have hearings on the hill as early as tomorrow morning -- -- Catherine -- just for clarity is it is it proper to save it.
In the early going from your reporting.
We don't know whether this was some sort of terrorist organization.
Whether this was one person with a beef.
That's a local issue in Boston -- -- frankly at this moment and we know there was an act of terror.
But as we can look it up in the dictionary and this fits the definition but we don't know whether quote terrorists were involved.
The definition of terrorism is an act of violence to promote a political and what is not clear.
Is that is it an individual.
Is it -- small cell of individuals are they domestic or is there an international component but when you have simultaneous.
They meet that threshold definition.
Of terrorism so you are correct.
Earlier Katherine as this was breaking we talked about whether there had been.
On usual signs of -- a specific.
Questions about whether that Boston Marathon might be a target at the time the answer was no there hadn't been is that still the case.
That is still the case has spoken to about half dozen people -- who work this issue on Capitol Hill or -- in federal law enforcement.
And the -- I've -- from every conversation.
Is that there was nothing specific or credible at least initially there saying to me.
That there was a threat to the Boston Marathon.
What's one of the things that's happening right now is that they're going back.
Through that threat information to see if something had been missed but again you have the sense that people were somewhat.
Blind sided by what happened in Boston station there.
All right Catherine we could -- you -- blind sided and sometimes.
Win when they're blind sided bet that could mean that it's because this is -- some big.
-- and this could be a couple of folks are a person with a back right after June.
I don't want to get into because we don't have this information yet.
Whether we know the individual or an individual's association.
But to speak more broadly one of the issues the intelligence community has been wrestling with especially in the last two to three years.
Is the emergence of what they called the individual actor or small cells.
The problem with that is that is very hard to intercept communications.
They don't necessarily use the traditional methods of talking to each other which -- allowed us to intercept or to block.
These kinds of events in the past so I don't want to go down one road as to a specific group.
But this is been seen as the emerging threat individual.
Or small cell which is very hard to infiltrate by law enforcement in this case the FBI -- -- -- -- All right intelligence correspondent live in Washington we back to her as events warrant on the left --
