Very hot and serious topic this morning in -- controversy over the FDA's approval for over the counter sales.
For emergency contraception to people as young as fifteen years old but our own doctor Manny Alvarez writes this quote.
This decision is just another example of how our health care system is broke and and no one is really watching what's going on America today.
Seems like everything else in this administration changes when our hard decisions to make.
Manny Alvarez is the senior managing editor Fox News health dot com and you -- green also joins me on the set here with her thoughts on this.
Former president of the women's media center.
And a Fox News contributors has since we heard from doctor -- the -- you know your reaction to that.
Well I think this decision is really about removing obstacles.
And barriers for all women.
And and making this over the counter and I think we have to applied actually the FDA -- -- science over politics.
When you have politics -- mixing with you know the medical decisions that -- woman is making with her family with her doctor and a young woman would be making we know with herself for with her partner with her parents.
I do really with -- pair.
It's -- -- the parents are not included in this equation.
-- because if you're fifteen years old.
You can walk into any pharmacy and in any retail out that -- -- pharmacy with that and eat eat you can do something that's going to.
Dramatically change was gone on -- your body Dr.
Well this is exactly the opposite this is politics getting their nose in health care like everything else are they doing in this country you know.
There you know since when is a fifteen year old child a woman.
Not give me a break.
-- fourteen year old daughter she's had teenage here she's a child she has a lot of growing up to do.
It is my responsibility.
-- might -- responsibility.
To bring that.
To fruition not the federal government not the president not anybody else.
And you know it's funny because President Obama.
When when senators and really just came on you know whatever it was that this the first choice of plan B -- being proposed is -- while I agree with her seventeen should be the limit.
I supported that.
All of a sudden now some judge in New York questions that.
Everybody runs for the -- nobody wants to make the hard decisions and all of a sudden now it's fifteen years.
So what's gonna happen now.
Two years from now on someone's gonna make another argument they're gonna say oh you know what maybe -- from the moment they're born.
Mind you -- you know that's just that that's politics interfering health care.
And to me there are side effects -- and wouldn't be talking about it I'm going to be telling the American public this is a medication and pattern should be aware exactly what's going -- I mean at red warnings on allergy medication for my kids look -- killing Palin thought why not get that.
And you isn't right and this is the -- that it reads like the constitution to so many you -- -- possibilities probabilities percentages for the tell me fifteen year old girl.
And who can even buy it and give -- to a fourteen year old or thirteen year old gonna understand all the potential side effect on what they should do after -- -- have a -- symptoms.
-- -- -- -- What what concerns me is that.
Not all young people not all teenagers have the relationship that probably Dr.
Manny has with.
His to his daughter to what do we work -- that goes for those young women who.
Do not have that opportunity to talk -- their parents get their parents involved.
In this decision.
We can't leave them out there in the cold.
Else has been left out in the cold.
Are all women when you when you have that's not the ability for them not to get this over the counter.
There -- -- by pharmacy hours being you know not open at all times.
Pharmacies not in as many locations for what this affects all of us so ideally yes parents would be talking -- -- yeah.
And you're still going to -- you're not all doing media -- unemployment is sitting in there you know listening to what the doctor has to say to your child.
-- what scares me is you know this idea that seventh and eighth court in the eighth graders may ninth graders in -- fifteen year age range as seen each other.
Alluding to worry about it you can just take what -- pillaging and I you know over at the corner right after it's no problem.
Actually -- the research shows that teenagers.
Understand that this is not you know to replace you know ongoing.
Contraception -- that this is you know these -- iconic I have to listen.
-- with you there I have to disagree with yeah there is all overwhelming evidence that -- -- -- college.
Women in college.
Sometimes use this emergency contraception.
As their routine method of contraception you know what.
They don't wanna be on the pill and so every time they make a mistake to run again this and every time -- make the mistake they gonna read get this you know what -- to become the becomes how.
Habit and the -- becomes the method of choice for preventing pregnancy and that's on the college level.
And yeah -- -- mean it ain't no doubt what the long lasting implications of using it that in that way are when this girl decides she wants to have a baby a few -- -- -- I'm not arguing that this has some home you know mild to moderate side effects non.
Terrible side event I still at -- and I worry about a topic pregnancies I worry about a lot of things as an -- do you want him because I have women that come to my practice sometimes.
They don't even know that they're pregnant.
So I have a problem with that but I do realize that this.
Used properly which is my argument used properly with good instructions with adult like attitudes and the person that's taking it it's okay.
But not at eleven years old or or fifty.
Perhaps leave it there to -- thank you for being here Dr.
Thank you very much it's very controversial decision and more.
