We're that we're.
There's a good -- government won't.
And that's not very sincere -- got -- Came from President Obama at a press conference with reporters yesterday and this is power play and -- in Chris Cairo and welcome.
How do you do Internet.
And the president there was talking to Jonathan Karl from ABC news asked the question about how come things don't seem to be going very well for the president now he's been.
Twice turned back.
By senate Democrats.
Once on gun control legislation.
And another time on -- call to not Alter automatic reductions are automatic increases in spending known as the sequester in Washington.
With tax increases.
When it relates at least the F today.
He's got -- stalled agenda and people are crappy and he says he's no lame duck in fact.
It's people just don't understand how good things -- So we'll talk about that and the ways in which.
President should do and don't become lame ducks will do that.
We will also talk about the standoff.
Between the White House and Republicans.
In congress over the terrorist raid on the US consulate in Ben -- Libya.
We will also talk about the president's health law and how implementation thereof.
Is affecting things -- hope.
Let's say we get started let's say we get started and -- and I can think of no better way to start especially on the subject of -- second term presidential clout.
The Dana Perino.
Because -- like aspect.
Well -- beaten you can she was in fact the Press Secretary.
To George W.
He was trying to keep his clout.
And she is of course the love to you now as they co host of the five where she is in charge of making sure.
That that neither FCC sensors.
Any announcers have to get involved welcome back to the show day.
Thanks so much -- Okay now I promised myself I would not ask you about why you wrapped.
I'm I'm not going to do that I promise.
-- helmet him it definitely if you if you did everything Greg -- told you to do you'd be in trouble pretty quickly -- back.
I have to ask you this major dog where baseball that's -- -- in Jasper I just don't think of is that kind of dog you know.
Yeah he's a good problem though.
-- -- to take them around the city and get pictures of him and all sorts of different places and wearing weird things I don't dress -- not too much that was actually my husband pat.
OK I'm all right as I -- so much like the president yesterday you -- apportioning blame to others.
Nevermind I'll Wear your agenda that that's at all.
So vote but what about that the president yesterday said I'm not a lame duck now we've seen in the past the very famously -- -- -- a great piece about this yesterday pointing this out.
When Bill Clinton came out and said I'm still relevant.
That was the best side that anybody had to that point that he was it.
Why did the president feel compelled and was it wise for him to comment yesterday and say -- matter.
I think that if they had.
-- the press conference differently and put it put the president in a position of strength.
To be the bully at the bully pulpit.
That they would have had a better press conference instead it look like one of those just because perhaps press conferences.
In the Carl rose office I remember there was this big board as three month outlook on the calendar.
And we would look out -- say -- look on April 24 it's going to be the hundredth -- -- pavement the second administration's that we should do something on that day.
But it seemed to me yesterday was that they had all they have the press conference on the president's calendar and it is mailed it and and it is very unfortunate because it's not people on the right that work alarms it.
It was people on the left if you look at for example Maureen Dowd column this morning in the times.
They're just dismayed and he's got three and a half years left.
I think one of the problems -- is that.
After the reelection -- they felt really good about things and they have a reason to feel good about things in the White House the president then asked.
Senate Democrats to do something they could not do which is to vote for his gun control legislation.
Then he got mad about it.
And now they're going into the 2014 election.
All of those members of congress are hearing from their constituents their concerns about obamacare.
And jobs yesterday the president and talk about those at all and he's got so many other things on his plate that I think their dream.
Of recapturing the house and 24 team is becoming more and more of a long shot every day.
Well and and the farther that slips away.
The president's strategy which said we're going to break the fever of house Republicans.
And then defeat -- in mid terms and then have our way would only -- to increase.
The impatience of his political base wouldn't -- if they thought that there was no chance for total victory they'd be looking to get what they can while they can't.
And -- also and they have you must have somebody new in legislative affairs -- encouraged him to.
You've put on this but the -- it if they in themselves called the charm offensive with members of congress well.
You can't do that and then.
Ridiculed and -- and find the nation mother out of town.
And expect that that dinner would've had any lasting -- fact.
The other thing that's amazing is.
This is a white as it's been known to use polls to their advantage.
And take it -- -- -- look at them and say okay this is where we're going to go.
-- Obama care for example the Kaiser poll yesterday was just devastated he wrote about it this morning about 71% of people say it's -- just too much.
And yet the president sounds so tone deaf when he says.
Most it's been implemented everything will be fine that's not what those members of congress are hearing in their district believe me they have specific stories about.
The concerns about the uncertainty it's not that people don't want.
Health care to exist and it.
-- to -- provide healthcare to their employees.
They just don't know how to plan and the government has -- luxury of not having to a budget in five years that's not how businesses work.
-- to see it's it's sad to me away I don't understand how could they can be so disconnected.
From what people are trying to tell them.
Well you know one thing that you guys -- called on the bush team.
Is that the closer mid term elections got in 2006.
Because all as we always say here only a president's own party can make him or her lame duck you it's not the other guys who do it to you at your own team.
And as the bush White House got closer and closer to the 2006 mid terms and Republicans got more and more anxious in congress.
It became very difficult for you guys to get anything put through car.
Just look at that it in 2005 -- such -- would've been the first year the second term President Bush tried to get Social Security done.
That didn't that didn't happen.
On it immediately after that and on June 30 2005.
Something dramatically change for the Bush Administration that immediately took away that concern about a lame duck remember what it was.
Sandra Day O'Connor announced her resignation over.
All of a sudden now the president is front and center again with the John roberts' nomination.
As that's going through -- August of 2005 guess what else happens.
Cindy she usually comes on the scene.
Two weeks later Hurricane Katrina hits.
Five days later William Rehnquist dies and -- you have Harriet Miers and then Justice Alito.
Dubai ports and we then went from crisis to crisis.
And from there.
What do think President Bush did -- on the war in Iraq remember the surge.
In 2007 and he had he -- really the only one.
With Petraeus who believed in what he wanted to do and he had to think convince the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
His secretary of state.
I'm somewhat the secretary of defense and other generals -- the go along with -- that was the best thing that he could've done.
The congress at the time to remember and President Bush's book decision points even the Republicans are saying.
Look this war's gonna hurt us in the mid term elections maybe we should pull out of president of so that's not the principle thing to do we can fix this.
And that's so -- lame duck status sort of was staved off.
By some of those other things -- out on the Supreme Court -- That could happen for President Obama I think it's likely to happen.
Oh yeah I'm I'm I'm sure I -- sure you're right about that and and as president offset these rumors of his demise are exaggerated because he just is not.
I'm going to be back.
He did it looks he -- -- had a plan yesterday it looked like you know those countdown clocks.
-- you haven't felt like something it used it can just imagine that he and Michelle have one of those on the mantle and they just look at it every night and I mean we're a little bit closer.
Little bit closer to get a -- a hundred million allocated that we could think that -- bless him and ask you.
I have been holding forth with no knowledge of course.
That Jay Carney.
No -- know that the president was going to be calling on Ed Henry first.
Should have been obliged to tell the president that have been -- question and specifically.
The question about whistle blowers since that's what our network was reporting yesterday.
That Jay Carney what would have been obliged to tell the president that before he called on Ed Henry right.
I really can't explain that.
I used to over Pratt President Bush in fact he was he has said about me.
I never was surprised by a question.
When Dana Perino was in charge of the briefing.
And and there were times -- -- that would bring him on something that didn't come up but he was never surprised by something.
It was that head of the Drudge Report it was the lead on Fox News.
It if you're going to go to Ed Henry you have to have something better than -- get back to you.
-- about that that's the press secretary's job is they all get back to you you wanna put the president in that position.
Without an opening statement aren't used to announced yesterday I don't think they should have done that press conference at all an -- -- held off until they had something had to announce on Syria.
Or some other new initiative in tomorrow Chris and Friday you're gonna get more economic news.
And it doesn't look like it's going to be good it -- at -- mixed housing is up jobs bill.
Hurting and Mark Zandi today the economists -- the Obama administration love says pump.
It looks like obamacare is having an impact yeah that the president just said the opposite yesterday.
So they've got a hornet's nest that can win.
Internet because she agreed with me I am now and somewhat sorry for bringing up with the she -- -- dog and sideways but not really being afraid to ask your America's -- -- -- -- -- America wants its act back.
Dana Perino you are gracious and kind to make time for us today we thank you thank you grant.
Okay Internet here's what we're gonna do we're gonna collect ourselves remote because one of your very favorite -- is going to be here to entertain you.
And hopefully keep playing mostly for the rest of the show that's going to be David Mercer and Charlie -- will be here when we come back.
So stick around.
A phone call yesterday.
To a basketball player did he make a phone call to the whistle blowers who were trying to expose the murder or for fellow Americans did he called them today and say you know what I want to congratulate you for coming forward.
You're doing the right thing he said twelve hours.
And that angered and was trade -- he is a Republican congressman from South Carolina On the Record w/ Greta -- -- -- if the president had time to make a phone call to a basketball player.
Who expressed -- sexual orientation.
Why didn't he have time to call some whistle blowers and the State Department -- and encourage them to come forward and tell their tale about what happened and Ben Ghazi.
And this is power play.
Now look here's the thing about and got -- whatever you think -- -- don't think happened or whatever else this set to is going to be a real real struggle over the next few weeks.
The administration has been very successful so far.
Well mostly successful so far batting away this issue in describing it as a more -- thing something that only finish lists are intrastate and but house Republicans say then let us that a shies away.
And they are now getting ready to hold hearings and they're getting ready report whistle blowers.
And on and on it goes how will this play out and we of course you not care about the quest for truth we care about political consequence here -- -- life so I don't think you know no better people to bring to the discussion that David Mercer.
He is a democratic strategist and former deputy national finance director for the Democratic National Committee.
And not in charge of amateur titles David Mercer welcome back.
Is a columnist for The Washington Times and it -- person.
You know I think exception to that and structure so what's the resentment I don't know about miles.
Well yeah -- -- editor and the Eric Holder now I don't know I don't know you for too long to get -- all that okay now here's a question.
The Republicans David.
Have not been successfully tried during the election.
Surprise surprise us.
Don't take his lines.
They -- during the election they've been trying since then.
To try to make this issue -- guy's stick and while polls show that Americans generally thinks something smells about the whole deal and they have some concerns about it.
It's not a farmer and the fact is it possible now as you get in hearings and introduced -- starts to move up the chain of public it.
I don't think so it seems like -- -- nine there -- various agendas you got McCain and Lindsey Graham and others.
And trying to close the president into one.
Action or another without full -- and and and and preparation for which the president is doing now.
Gone and I think you know being Ghazi occurred.
To -- Have been Gaza hearings when we're trying to formulate what we're going to do with Syria I think is stepping on.
Various messages and I think serial remain at the top.
-- -- -- -- allies like Turkey.
In Israel and Jordan and and concerns in the Middle East over.
On in the -- Ghazi deal you know look the purpose.
Of this hearing is supposedly.
To put some substance to allegations.
That whistle blowers are being.
Curtailed from sharing testimony.
There's no evidence of that -- of what I would consider -- rumor at this point.
And I don't see that kind of a story taking over from Syria in the other issues that we got to address whether we just talked.
About the question how -- the president not not not not.
He called on deck on Ed Henry what do you think Ed Henry was gonna ask him -- -- -- -- ask -- about global warming and no he called on it and -- shouldn't -- have been equipped to say.
-- this is an answer I have on the bad guys you think that you guys have been reporting on.
With -- screaming sirens for two days that you think you should have said do you think you should -- better to say that.
I don't know anything about this what do you tell me about it and analysts it was a -- that fit well.
Only then did it shouldn't have been incumbent at least on Jay Carney to have said -- -- Just ask you absolutely and edit.
-- sort of underscores this notion that there that he can have their head in the sand.
Over the White -- but I also kind of -- actually agree with.
David what do you know.
I think that you because you -- -- the Boston bombing situation which was.
-- obviously a disaster and because you have the serious thing which is a brewing.
First through the administration.
It it does get complicated quickly but you also have another problem and that is that that you.
Liberals are so much better at expressing outrage over -- foreign.
That I think conservatives are.
And for that reason I think -- it's kind of hard to see how the big guys -- thing gets you super good traction.
Anyone other than people who already -- president or are just like the -- They're already there already -- this -- -- you mentioned Syria -- and -- New York Times and CBS news -- And Christine let's take a look at that US responsibility for what's going out of -- which basically genocide more than 70000 people have been killed.
My -- -- white religious minority in that country led by Charles.
May he have used chemical weapons.
-- -- We what are the chain of meditative after the treasurer master crew heard the reporter who did earlier today that it might it might have been the red cries against -- -- I think I was dying of chlorine gas station he said we'll surely this means that help is on its way.
By here's -- the New York Times CBS -- that if you accept responsibility for Syria yes 24%.
No 62 blue percent.
And so David here's the question.
And these are of the neo conservative flavor in the new Holland Iceland -- -- in -- yeah I know there's some conservatives.
The McCain Lindsey Graham Nash.
I think that it's time that we get involved in serious that we need to do we -- no fly zone we need to do -- Most liberals this is much like you know and -- we talked about this here before.
Bill Clinton when asked what his greatest regret of his presidency and he had some options that shows the question.
And -- the point of not preventing the genocide in -- one.
That he looked back on -- as he could drop a 101 airborne and there.
And dealt with that -- pretty fast fashion.
Since they're neat and simple you do believers yeah absolutely -- -- it's the right back in 97 it was not a problem is not a problem.
Can't the president.
Relying on a number like this that the broad majority of Americans say Syria.
-- -- can't the president.
Continue to resist action.
Wolf first let's establish there has been action taken there is fourth in 50400.
That's gone and humanitarian needs we know of the problems -- cause with refugees into.
Turkey and elsewhere.
There's also 250.
Billion dollar million dollars it's gone in on nonlethal aid so there have been steps taken that this water is still on got a that this is a senior civil war -- a lot of that is ongoing.
As we are trying.
Two as we have in Iraq.
Withdraw down there and bring troops home and do the same in Afghanistan.
To do so on just sort of a knee jerk reaction.
When we are also working with Turkey Jordan and Israel on -- and and then let's be mindful of that in his visit to Israel.
And -- didn't spin through to today.
And the Israelis have not asked for intervention Jordan wants a political solution in Iraq Turkey would like this same.
-- but there's also being preparations we now know with the Pentagon and others on what are the options that we can exercise.
That will maintain good will with our allies at the same time be effective.
In bringing to a close a civil war -- -- -- blew.
A -- up -- -- -- -- Over threatening to kill some people.
And that is that you didn't he didn't succeed in -- city with the streets of bad guys he would slow with blood and he's kind of crazy.
Did the deal there Syria this is an unending nightmare by that standard.
-- for -- -- right yeah because the Syrian people are getting killed had the misfortune to be live where there.
Are no good options for President Obama regarding Syria and it with the situation with Qaddafi you know he got a couple of times and you he's -- -- Losing his support from the the humanitarian liberals.
That that that.
And put him in office but it but here's the problem.
I would say that did you know all these situations are very very complex.
And and I would go back to the start of the Iraq War when.
We we went to into Iraq.
That's decided that they were going to politicize it and and and tournament run a couple of campaigns -- that the person John -- then the second -- worked out very well for Obama.
He and I want to forget about it is that the sale on politicizing.
Isn't there a bit and -- Son but my my simple point is that these are very complex situations.
And the realization of it you know on on either side and I think even to some degree goes could go to -- I think I'm not sure.
But it ages it's it's a very.
Sort of tawdry affair.
But -- -- from that limitation of tawdry mess to another.
And let us hear what president had to say about his health insurance program.
Of 8590% of Americans who -- you have health insurance.
This -- very apt.
And they're only impact is that their insurance is stronger better more secure.
Than it was before.
-- -- that's.
They don't worry about it us.
And -- that was president saying this is as good as it's.
Going to get under obamacare he said if you -- and but just look at the poll about where they are.
We know we have the we have the poll from.
Your family foundation of 42 people don't even think the law exists 42 Vietnamese like what law it doesn't exist I thought they repealed that.
And -- under the Republican message machine six.
If -- spread the -- so effectively that people think that it's long gone and then here's what fox the Fox News report out today said.
If you had a cast an up or down vote on the 2010 health care law will just say 54 say repeal the law forty once they keep the one play.
Is this really is good is it get that's what.
I'm really whether it is as good as America holdings alignment boot idea that you're Kaiser.
Poll found also that 33%.
Of the people of of of their poll.
Want to see you be.
They repeal which is way down from where it's if you are doing -- I think substantially changed.
When -- give people options and -- -- something we've all given to the fact that.
Whatever changes need to be made were open to change this.
We're not what we -- floor below or they have for the Supreme Court itself.
But that doesn't mean they're not going to be adjustments.
To the fire and I heard that Charlie did you hear what that is certainly Visalia and -- that.
-- -- -- -- Well if you were listening more closely you would have heard that he just said whatever changes need to be made speaking anything there -- -- is that is just as he announces press conference there was a -- -- and applications now down a three page there are a lot of oil.
And we also have to work.
With all the states and trying to get the exchanges set up which aren't -- going to -- until -- fourteen -- -- and purposes.
But the thing that is working is for the mother who had a preexisting condition.
She's now you can't be refused health -- the son of a family whose father.
Give him early -- that England is bankrupt.
Who -- -- within the pre existing condition and I think and time is his book.
And they did their their underfunded the Republicans -- yeah.
Are you proud of me you know you -- -- the other wrote the bill says it's going to be excellent -- to implement.
And that's the good part that good the bad part is that once it gets implemented.
-- -- to all of our -- and we just pray it doesn't cost too much money.
Before -- projection and you John and Kaiser also found in in it it was a memo attached to that hole.
That -- the rate of expense or you know or cost.
Increasing has slowed dramatically.
Contrary to what a lot of.
All right so what you guys that didn't test the premise quickly of my column today again -- bits and I won't follow Nancy starlet -- Telecom.
-- you -- -- thank you don't don't test this premise and and my -- this president says.
I ate dessert in 2012 we put the good stuff at the beginning and -- Democrats who got there and he's handled in 2010.
Over this law.
And now he's look at these same Democrats and saying guess what it's your turn again I ate dessert and -- -- twelve instead -- pre existing conditions.
Now -- -- fourteen you guys are gonna have to defend.
The -- and as it rises up out of the ocean this -- You're going to run away from that well look look -- with regard to what Charles said about the Republican.
-- machine in -- -- There's no mandate.
We that's all that's all the people really know right now they don't know about the the other elements of the -- and they don't and these Supreme Court has sanctioned and so -- little.
Quickly -- next time I'm having an argument with my wife I'm going to use the term.
Full stocked full.
Yeah I started I don't think you I think I think they're yeah they're great girls -- -- -- sleeping upstairs.
OK guys we thank you very much living witness today I'm Jonathan Hunt is up next how about some.
Mid century power points -- Hot hot -- Does your -- points for today let's take a look at the video released of the proposed Eisenhower memorial.
And it's controversial it's got what looks like giant mosquito netting and all kinds of stuff.
It's kind of cool looking though the people don't like it because it doesn't cast as parents and sort of heroic.
Relief that the statue of grant particularly great general plan.
In front of the congress does -- Astride a horse but the cash into the left an infantryman to the right.
So where's the -- To talk about Eisenhower are -- Your first PowerPoint is this heavy tax right Eisenhower you do not know -- I bet everybody thinks he's from Kansas where was he born.
Texas he's born in Texas his dad was working out there and rare road and he was -- of Texas making him only second southerner to be elected president.
Sent after the civil war the first Republican.
So take that.
Bush that's true.
Secondary point he shall -- term there's a lot to like about Dwight -- story but particularly this.
He was made in -- it'll aid to Douglas MacArthur a guy with an ego bigger than his corn cob pipe.
And he's a hero of the rainbow division in World War I a massive -- image.
And he was so dismissive and need Eisenhower wouldn't even let -- -- army and take the street car.
When he came to Washington very few would expect that Eisenhower -- don't want to be macarthur's boss.
Technically you get down to it and going to be president while MacArthur got snubbed by Harry Truman.
And didn't even bother running for the Republican nomination so it just goes to show you even if your boss is a jerky that's his -- one day and your third PowerPoint is this wait for.
Wait for Eisenhower I was mostly dismissed by historians.
In the immediate term after.
Is mid term in office.
He was caretaker a do nothing and what ever.
But the longer we get from Eisenhower's presidency.
The more positive in light it is reflected in.
Guys like him in cal Coolidge who don't make a lot of -- while -- in there oftentimes are judged better the longer history has looked back.
Just say just pointing that out there -- PowerPoint analogy like to do every day who wanted to leave with word from our French -- -- chain of custody -- use CSI Damascus.
In the middle of the war we expect the chain of custody in deciding.
If a weapon quite as usual.
