OK congressman -- thank you for joining us.
So let's talk about some of the big issues right now on gun control seems to be one of the top ones you bats that you don't -- an assault weapons ban what about the wider proposal from the White House when it comes to background checks is their any portion of what he would call gun reform gun control that you could supports.
Well like most of America I was heartbroken to see the tragedy in Connecticut -- all -- we see any of these guys and tragedies but I don't believe gun bans are the answer history shows that the only thing gun bans are effective that is.
Keeping guns from -- biding citizens.
I do think there are opportunities for compromise and reform when to start with a extensive national dialogue about mental health I'd certainly would look at reforms that could bring school security and greater school security to our schools and Indiana.
We have about 15100 schools resource officers and it's been an effective program and are -- I think we can see that expand.
Any proposal that starts with gun bans -- frankly I'm suspicious.
What about background checks on people think that might be a place that you might be able to find compromise well -- I'm I'm I'm open to considering.
A dialogue on on background checks but I think the devil's in the details we need to be careful.
That what we do.
Ends up being something that that makes sense and and promoting safety and then just frankly become -- national gun registry which I don't think would.
Help provide for their safety and I frankly understand why many gun owners would be concerned.
Talking about the budget and the fiscal fights in Washington right now we're coming up -- A lot of big -- battles of her.
Deficits and debt ceilings and budgets and all these things.
What what do you think's gonna happen there -- we keep seeing it can -- kicked down the road but when it comes to trying to hash out a deal what are some things that you think we might see.
What I talked to voters in my district they believe we have to stop spending money as a country that we don't.
Have families have to balance budgets and we can't spend money that they that they don't have common and we have to stop doing that as a government.
As well I did support the no budget nobody knows no budget no pay bill that we just passed out of the house and now been signed and the law I think.
Virtually everyone understands -- you don't do your job you shouldn't.
I believe house Republicans will stand strong on the one point two trillion dollars sequester.
I think there is a willingness out of our caucus to negotiate how those reductions in spending occur but I do believe.
-- -- is not a willingness to negotiate whether they will currency to its current law and I think you'll see a stand strong.
And coming -- reading an article I'm from year district where he talked about what people concerns they -- bringing to you and one of them was the dysfunction in Washington so.
What do you tell people now that you're here and are seeing it firsthand is it worse than you thought is either.
Places where you see.
Chances for things to get done.
Well Bob I -- large I think the public.
The the quality of people serving out here is much higher than what the public probably.
Expects that's that I do think there are a lot of incentives in this process that lead to a partisan.
Divide and I had to be the president of the Republican freshman class I'm reaching across Allen working with -- -- -- President of the Democrat freshman class and were putting together a series of meetings so that people least get a chance to know each others far harder to demonize people.
That that you know and and our hope is just.
You know have some opportunities where we do get to know each other now I don't think we're gonna change the world overnight with -- her coffee or something.
Like that but.
In real world an adult world you have to get along with people even when you disagree and I certainly believe you can stand strong on principle on the strong conservative.
And still yet be civil in dealing with people across the I'll that's when things I hope to work on here counselors here.
That's great thank you -- Thank you very much.
