By God's grace but -- who has a conviction on the importance of doing something about spending in Washington DC.
Former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford thanking voters Tuesday night for sending him to congress.
After an extramarital affair with -- all the twists of the TV soap opera.
Joining us now from Seabrook South Carolina to talk about his comeback is congressman a -- former governor Mark Sanford.
And I guess I -- quite a governor because as I'm used to welcome back to FOX News Sunday sir.
-- -- -- But you have never been a stand in line politician you weren't when you were in congress -- the ninety's you weren't during your eight years as governor.
How -- do you intend to make your mark.
As a new congressman here in Washington.
Well I mean I think the same way that -- tried to fashion those things when I was in congress before when I was in the eight years of governorship.
Which is to stand up for ideas today I believe them any ideas that I talked about in this campaign -- once passed.
And ideas that I think are ultimately.
-- relevant to where people come from when they think about pocketbook -- quality issues.
The house Republican campaign committee stopped.
Backing you in the middle of the campaign when there were reports that you had violated your divorce agreement by going to your ex wife's.
Home and watching the Super Bowl -- your son they dropped it was a candidate that woods has raised the question.
Now that -- back in that you won without their help what's your relationship going to be with the house Republican leadership are going to be part of the team.
Where you get any more of an independent.
Well I'm a Republican who's always had an independent streak -- -- that would be the best way to define it.
And you know I I think it always like pass this past and I look forward to working with the entire Republican team.
You know I think that you look at the the composition of power in Washington DC right now with the senate the executive branch in the congress.
It congress as a -- that -- very much look forward to working with the Republicans as they could try to advance conservative ideals that are -- Important and reflective where taxpayer to come from across this country.
All right let's talk about conservative ideas in taxpayer right here because you're a big issue.
In the house as governor has always been government spending in fact in one memorable scene.
You once brought to pig's name pork and barrel to the to the house -- the state house floor and Columbia.
Protest pork barrel spending.
Question -- you come with any.
New ideas -- particular ideas about how to shrink the size of the federal government.
Well one that it's important -- conviction on that front in -- Milton Friedman once said that the ultimate measure of government is what it spends.
Because as a result of spending you have borrowing you have tax if you have a whole host of things that follow but that spending is what begins the did the problem that so many conservatives struggle with that frankly somebody taxpayers struggle -- Yeah I think that you guys have begin to get up in Washington really begin to dig into the numbers as I did back when I was governor look at -- that.
From -- you know -- that the budget numbers in South Carolina that led to the pigs in that case it was.
You know more than a hundred million dollar unconstitutional.
Deficit would -- months of deliberation on when the deliberation didn't work we up.
Finally resorted to something else to capture people's attention.
And it worked because -- we closed off that unconstitutional deficit.
And and what I'm gonna do is in essence look under the hood as a whole host of things I think you get a deal with the big rocks the big -- in Washington DC.
They're certainly entitlements you -- look at Medicare Medicaid Social Security.
But there's a lot of inefficiency out there in all areas of government.
Did people or -- with warrant concerned about and I'm gonna be focused and there as as well I would also say this.
Another part of shrinking the deficit is not just had to cutting government spending it's tied to growing the economy look at the number of unemployed in this country right now.
That's a real drag on the economy so -- the economy grows relative that that's another part of shrinking that monster if you will.
Governor let's address your personal scandal.
What did you learn from it.
-- -- -- -- -- I would say that you probably learned more in the valleys of life and you do in the mountain tops.
I learned whole new -- for that never comprehended before with regard to God's grace.
With regard to the reflective grace that comes to two other humans that you walk.
With on a daily basis.
I'd say that I learned a lot of bad judgment I learned a lot about forgiveness and actually good and a litany of different things.
-- -- bullet down this way you know our our minister gave a great serve and a number of months back.
And his point was do the events of your life -- -- or -- your life.
I think it politics.
You know people want to take an event and make it definitional to your life.
I think that in -- these valleys or in the of these bumps that we hit in the road of life.
Either by circumstance survive our own actions.
It can be refining points world when you grow as a result of the it to the soul searching that comes in the wake -- success.
You are now engaged.
To the woman with whom you have the affair -- -- -- shop for as she made a brief appearance and we have a picture of an up on the screen at your victory party.
Which raised some eyebrows debt.
Question what -- your boys think about and and happier for boys and have they accepted her.
I'm not gonna -- -- Gator family conversations but I would just say it is what it is and I am a right now.
-- -- -- with one of my boys who has a whole host of different.
Yet college friends here scattered across this half of them sitting in right now.
Do you have a date for your wedding and will your your -- both -- come to Washington to live -- you -- -- feel like on The National Enquirer there.
Exactly what is -- fifty -- new Internet to acquired fifth hi I'm not gonna make news on that front tonight.
-- heard this morning our right of -- we've goat kids.
Let me ask another question because people wonder about so I mean there was some question -- you know your race.
Attracted unusual attention.
I think it's fair to say for a special election and won congressional house district and people wonder about two.
One of the things is is -- true.
That back late last year December that you went to your ex wife Jenny and asked her actually happened during your political career.
To once again run your campaign.
Well what what what's true today I went there to visit with her because I think that you don't want the first thing she had to determine.
Was whether she was gonna run an issue at that time was talking about running I don't think there would have -- anything more harmful.
Char four boys and haven't.
Four you know.
-- I mean a mom and a dad still mom and dad but former husband wife run against each other and so we had a conversation of that and other things.
And I think it was important to clear the air on that front she should it -- -- -- not to run that point.
Ultimately after crossing remembered the other -- -- done a number of -- guys haven't conversation indeed with her boys decide to go ahead run.
And it's been -- the really interesting.
Journey here the last five months not just in the conversation with them but -- conversational -- -- voters across the first congressional district of South Carolina.
The -- things that they would like to see in Washington DC a greater adherence to taxpayer issues that they'd like to -- in Washington DC.
And frankly they're concerned about the direction this country and the piling on of debt and deficit that I think -- -- we will impact the very voice it you're losing to.
Well let let's pick up on that because back in 2009 before all this personal -- you were exploring the possibility.
Of running for president in 2012 you've been exploring the idea of setting up a national nationwide organization.
So the question is.
Does your political comeback now and as a congressman from the first congressional district of South Carolina or is there the possibility.
Of higher office.
What what it's his one.
People begin to look at that Foreman is a big gulf between them look at -- for me.
And and -- you ought to do this unity this year look at this and be doing so I had police trip wire on that front.
That you're exactly right and number of people were suggesting those kinds of things.
There's two of my focus my focus to be the absolutely best congressman that I could be the first for the first congressional district of South Carolina.
You know I'm right now here family farm which I grow I grew up in its in the southern into the district.
My professional life began in the northern into the district up in Charleston.
And this is a traditional low country of South Carolina there's not a pretty her I think move more wonderful.
Part of the world nothing against other congressional districts in this country.
And and so you know what I want to do as well represent the people.
The first congressional district South Carolina period and and going to be very much focused on doing so as I get sworn in come this week on Wednesday.
All right and gratefully.
That we're about to run out of time that incidentally if I was The National Enquirer you were the chamber of commerce for the loss of the -- country there.
What do you think -- -- Republican national Republican Party needs to do to start winning national elections again.
Well I don't think it's prescriptive in terms of any one thing I think it is indeed a whole host of things.
But I would like any party to a brand and I think that -- when brands and caterpillar John -- to produce tractors and bulldozers.
You know I guess it was.
Did Peter's years ago the wrote a book entitled in search of excellence.
And while things they said about great brands and great companies as they go back they stick to the -- when there's difficulty.
-- what that means it's caterpillar didn't try and produce an airplane or boat they go back to produce and a better bulldozer.
And so I think that regard to the Republican brand if you will which is all that conservative philosophy.
It's very important that they go back to the admitting that brought their very existence.
You know it brought brought about their very existence in the first place and so I think the actually have to.
-- there's been real brand dissolution as -- time for Republicans have been in essence squishy on spending.
Are squishy on the whole notion taxes and I think that one thinks it will ultimately I think.
Receive the most and where support is again a very clear vision or picture as to what the parties about rather than at times -- messages or convoluted.
Governor -- we're gonna have to leave it there thank you so much for coming in today and talking web SI have a good weekend when your son this.
And military -- here in Washington next -- Look forward to it be well.
