Not cal -- -- for today's media getting some of -- some of these big stories wrong and a I think I haven't read this before CBS saying kept saying that we getting them wrong over and over again do tell.
-- Scott Kelly was accepting the Fred Friendly First Amendment award few days ago in New York City.
And he lashed out at his own profession it was quite amazing.
He -- -- that we get that repeatedly hit CBS news stories wrong and then we also have lambasted the whole concept of being first.
First with a story he says it's vanity.
It's self conceit.
Whoever heard about in this business.
Know why I'm sitting at home watching by TV monitors saying.
They were first that's the game that we play in our control -- maybe a touch of humility would serve us better.
An amazing get mentioned that we have egos in the television business I didn't ever know that if you've -- I had no idea I've never met one in my entire time media.
I'll -- -- -- and yeah I think -- that we really ought to discuss tonight I appreciate his honesty and -- why do they get so many stories wrong.
And I think there a couple of answers for that first of all there's been a strong cutbacks in budgets especially for a overseas bureaus.
In the network businesses that are reaching one reason that of course is -- decline in ratings.
While the ratings declining -- the broadcast networks because they give a singular unified.
View of the world and I think another reason a corollary of that that they get -- -- wrong is because virtually everybody at these networks thinks alike.
And they're related in some cases the people outside and in the government take a look at this story just breaking over the weekend that they -- CBS news is rather is on the National Security Council and was one of those who was.
Let's say well we won't say it whitewashing but will say yep.
Who is enabling.
That talking points on the -- -- affair.
We have Savannah Guthrie of The Today Show this morning announcing that she's going to be marrying her long term long time boyfriend.
Who is a former Al Gore.
Staff member and who works with a I think it's a -- now that's that's affiliated with the clintons.
And over and over and over again you see this happening with people who are allied with the democratic left and moved.
Back and forth between the political world and the media world.
That's why they get so many stories wrong because they all think alike and often what they think it -- wrong -- put more conservatives and Republicans in -- newsroom.
I think you'll get fewer stories wrong.
So don't get would you want to be better adjusted every newsroom was a -- 5050 split politically -- I don't think it's 5050 -- numbers I don't -- -- get into the numbers -- we get we get that with grace and with gender and how many women and how many African Americans or Latinos.
If if you're a liberal it doesn't matter the kind of body UN -- it's the -- you think that your brain that your outlook that your world -- Not your gender or race or sexual orientation.
So that's what ought to be front and center not not even 5050 I think -- could be honest liberals I think in this case Scott Kelly was being.
Very very honest that I congratulate for that is that good and decent guy.
But but again if you all think alike and are surrounded by people who think the same -- you do that's going to open you up to the possibility of errors that he was addressing.
What did you imagine that Scott and I also told to little about it tell us some of the new.
Media that are influencing news coverage shut -- and read it and these kind of things.
That how do have a growing influence vote for good old bat he seemed pretty angry about it as well is it isn't this deep in the sense that -- it was.
What an old school network -- sort of raging against the dying of the light to some extent.
Yeah I'll have to count all the former host of Nightline for many years an -- ABC reporter.
Has -- much of the same thing it's always sad that there FaceBook and Twitter the others were not journalism they were gossip.
Well that may be true up to a certain quite and you do have to filter all information.
Through the through the filter of accuracy.
But if it is that way like talk radio like cable news like fox.
To get around the gatekeepers of information in the mainstream media.
So to that -- -- people think communicate with each other about things that are going on that's good.
But -- -- have to be checked including the CBS newsroom which according to Scott -- has not been doing a very good job of it.
