But president -- and lots of laughter as Arizona State commencement speech in 2009.
But no one is laughing now in fact outrage is growing among Republicans and Democrats over the -- targeting conservative groups.
Senator John -- started question Harris practiced over a year ago.
He joins us before I ask you about China question Harris -- three years ago I have you been quoted as describing this -- Chicago style politics.
Do you -- we stand by that but give any reasonably the president knew about the IRS targeting groups before Friday.
Well it's hard to -- is we don't know I mean obviously this is something that an investigation will bring out and the house is gonna have a hearing later this week the Senate's gonna have a hearing later this week.
But I think that the president has a problem here Greta whether he knew about this or not because it feeds into the broader narrative.
That with the weather is fast and furious or whether it's this report today that HHS is skirting the law by trying to get.
Private companies to publicize Obama -- they're just so many things that's -- come across to people is abuse of power.
And I think this feeds into that narrative it's in the presence developing a bigger and bigger credit credibility gap with the American people and that's a real problem for him whether he had any direct -- other not.
-- -- -- sent three letters to the IRS did you ever get an answer.
What would do with the letters addressed and why did what made you send -- -- what we sent -- -- that to the IRS commissioner.
Who you heard there and that in the Clinton back in March saying that they don't do this march of last year -- -- that fell onto the last two months ago -- fourteen months -- over a year ago and we started a four letter marshes are you there were reports and rumors about this targeting and harassment conservative groups and so we asked him in -- we sent another -- -- another one -- August.
And every circumstance the response came back they did admit to any of this.
Did they say they're still looking that they deny they basically just didn't mean they this is -- and it doesn't they they don't do that.
-- I mean what they don't target right well tell me do that just apologized admitted last week they have NC I think that's the that's a huge problem credibility problem for the IRS now because now they're that -- -- the agency is -- responsible for implementing and enforcing -- -- which I think is gonna mortified.
The American people that this whole episode reinforces.
And in confirms.
The American people's worst fears about big government run amok.
And and I think it's a real problem for the administration particularly I'd also been -- and some of the other things are going on -- I think it's more than big government running -- I mean if the Harris a specific specifically targeting groups that's more than just like we don't even know it the right is doing what the right -- doesn't -- collection and doing.
That's more than just a big government.
That's something dirty if if they're targeting a group.
Well it is in an inning and again and it that conjures up ideas and I think for most Americans they start thinking this a police fear what when they hear these types of stories.
But it's really caught fire out there I mean the American people you probably hear this we're hearing that's out there.
This is something that just crosses a line for people when you start thinking that.
An agency a government agency can do this to a conservative -- simply because of their beliefs.
-- these are by and large -- C fours that do a lot of things that are.
You know organizations that you support the constitution this is really really a stretch well.
The -- Democrats settle a likewise great senator Harry -- -- something they'd leader Nancy Pelosi says something that but there's something I'm -- that I assume that there will be hearings on this to see exactly the our state.
But one of the things of the IRS -- complaints I'm here it's -- a specific targeting.
But that they ourselves.
Law -- In -- to to some groups tax exempt status.
That there are so slow to make it almost impossible for them to exist so it's not just targeting but -- they actually targeting people by not delivering a swift decision.
Whether or not they're going to be -- tax exempt organization -- that's another way to target them.
-- there lots of ways they can do this and that's it that's a good example of -- it's probably less overt.
Then -- just isn't anywhere else I could have run sure a lot of business right exactly and -- -- this sort of thing is going on and it's clearly intentional.
And I think these hearings this week in the house and the senate we're gonna have hearings as well and -- it is bipartisan outrageous isn't something is confined to Republicans.
This is something that the American people.
Generally I think find outrageous and want answers.
But that doesn't -- Jay Carney said tonight White House and he -- knows what he read about the president the end White House -- -- Delaware abstinence I think so -- I think today the president finally called it said it was outrageous but no -- -- -- He said it is yeah he did not apologize when I saw that he sit and if it happened he must not know that the that the -- is admitted and apologized last Friday so it you know it has happened then on it's it's finally copped to -- you know -- sent except thanks Chris.
