But if you really want to test demand give him power.
I think in that sense the president's failing that test of power because he is extraordinary power he's supposed to be -- be wise enough to restrain himself.
But he's using the power of government to investigate -- enemies he's tapping the phones of the press.
Was senator Rand Paul from the commonwealth of Kentucky he was on with -- -- the team on the aptly named entity.
And this is power play and I am Chris Farrell and what senator -- was.
Taking from the great -- -- there was in reference to.
The latest in a troika of scandals that are currently descending the Obama administration this -- about a really wave over broad.
What looks like it way over broad subpoena.
Of phone records and other things from the Associated Press the most the central news gathering and reporting entity in the United States by the attorney general.
And by the Justice Department.
And that is just the latest that is that was just part of a very -- Monday for this administration is they're battling back and in addition to more problems on the -- -- eat crow band the IRS thing which is -- -- bullet.
Who boys and technical term that relates to the IRS.
So we will talk about that we will talk about how this all -- downs too.
The efficacy of the president and his second term in a special segment that we will call Obama and when he sees.
Where you for you lovers of -- -- And then we will also -- talked to a member of congress about what house Republicans think they can't or may do as it relates the -- -- do all of that.
And we will do it is and solace and a fashion as is possible when talking about scandal corruption and political -- Because anybody can do that.
It's Matthew continent he is in fact the editor in chief of the Washington freebies and which is probable.
Act freely can stand -- you also have read.
And continue to read from time to time that these -- weekly standard welcome Matthew thank you for having.
So you're not that kind of journalists that the Obama administration -- you're not exactly the -- you're you're not there there -- of Canada I don't think they read the street you can rate your.
What -- -- -- from time -- time though I bet I bet if you broken some stuff you guys have had -- -- we have over over time that they're not reading it when we're not hurting them right causing him pain right but -- so good at moments of discomfort -- when you were able to survive this comforter when you're doing your job and yes when you're when you're afflicting the comfortable or at least this administration.
You're probably getting noticed.
There's been a lot of talk about a chilling effect from what's happened with the Associated Press Matt Drudge.
Most notably -- we have we all have to assume that everything.
Is being monitored now and I thought I don't have time to get -- -- on -- can't I.
I I can't I can't get there this is.
Ham handed heavy handed especially bad for an administration that has a bad reputation for bully boy tactics with the press.
To Ron Fournier and others and I've seen it in my own.
In my own work.
Than dealing with reporters and nasty fashion.
But this would cross the line into something else right.
-- I have to similar bit torn on this story because as much as I agree with you hear about it the administration really cracking down and -- and an intimidating a lot of people and I know.
Personally -- reporters whom this has happened to.
There's also this question of these national security leaks right if you -- and go back to last year.
Remembered when there is leak after leak testifying supposedly to the president's prowess and dismantling al-Qaeda and Osama the leaks about the stocks that virus citizen front page of the New York Times leaks that kill list -- I was wanna see those -- quashed because I think those -- being politicized so the question here is.
How broad -- was the DOJ.
Operating and I think you're actually right to save his phone lines it was over a broad it was Hartford Connecticut Washington DC so these -- phone line that's used by AP reporters of their retirement hundreds of right there lawyers HP's lawyers know I think that's where this scandal really lies and I think it's interesting too that you can actually connected with the B word -- -- -- word quote specifically because they.
Remember these leaks these national security -- -- talking about were all playing to the administration's message during the election of al-Qaeda is.
Yeah that he can Mudd college al-Qaeda central's decimated right that I became.
Oops we haven't hit this that video in the Gaza.
So -- you I think it's important to find out who was making these leagues because I think it could reach to the highest levels of the administration there's another scandal here just beneath the surface.
-- -- -- -- -- -- Allow me to be self interest -- isn't self interest and don't do it doesn't the American free enterprise system and our and our system run -- does level.
-- -- -- For.
There as a news organization.
At the Fox News that has been subject to -- some pretty rough stuff.
From this administration.
And part of a deliberate campaign marginalize.
And discredit via the fox and yet they've been Anita Dunn and all -- like we're gonna get you.
It as concerning as it is when there are leaks.
A year old -- twenty.
Records and searching the records and twenty lines that were used by hundreds of people go up and employers not -- -- in advance.
That has to have whatever chilling effect it has.
On leaguers from which is arguably the -- part of the goal here is the little leaguers know you got national security so we're gonna find you and come get you.
That's got to have a chilling effect on.
The economy -- reporters -- making the kind of stuff they're doing right but absolutely must not forget one of the reasons why I think the story is so politically powerful.
Is it can't -- broke you know the Monday following the Friday that the IRS scandals broke and here too we have this idea of the government.
Taking going beyond perhaps the rule of law.
In many cases in order to target to political opponents -- government -- and so they think that adds to the that this magnifying effect this perfect storm.
That's engulfing the Obama presidency right now now the.
Who talk about the other patterns in this storm system.
But as it relates -- the attorney general is is set to come out and have a press conference.
With Kathleen Sebelius today talk about out there doing so well Medicare fraud.
But that's not what the president is going to be about -- -- is going to be about basically this question.
We've attorney general holder will make the point we expected to make the point that you made which was national security leaks are very important and we've got to go get him so he's gonna say this is this is cool.
But the question for attorney general holder then becomes DG -- Personally authorized this subpoena because the rules say that the Department of Justice that only that the attorney general must sign off.
On a subpoena that -- a request -- -- of this man.
That's -- it -- suspected that the scandals that we're affecting the Justice Department in Obama's first term whether it has to do with black -- case where there has to do with.
The fast and furious case this may be seen as the straw that broke Eric -- back.
And we were getting into the second term Obama's very close to him very loyal to him but what -- was -- now Chris is the press.
It's angry and in the press gets angry I think they won't stop until heads roll old -- I've seen stuff before he.
I think I've I've seen that anger you if you throw a couple of Johnnie Walker black labels on that anger.
For -- press you invited the couple parties get little access that that that righteous indignation does I think people will lose their jobs as a result of this confluence of scandals -- next excellence of questionable but moved to the -- with the -- How how how far -- ago.
But today you know when -- -- you know okay well a you've.
-- affected my thinking.
This that's what I try to do give -- little perspective to things that affected my thinking I can't say for the this is definitely affected my thinking god can you OK Matthew thank you make time for.
Thank you it's okay now -- you're gonna do Internet because I feel you've -- it we're going to have a great and we're gonna have grown Nixon -- -- they're going to be here and we're gonna talk about.
What happens in the Mo -- what happens to the presidential second term mode Joseph.
With this how much time does he have to get out from under these scandals and all of this talk.
And what happens if he doesn't it's not -- process we'll talk about how when we come back -- stick around.
We have -- -- -- here's what they're going to black -- better.
-- that was President Obama talking about how much time is left in his term he was -- -- new York city New York City fund raiser hosted by Harvey Weinstein.
And attended by some very famous and all very rich but some of the very famous people.
This power play welcome back with -- president was trying to do there in talking to his supporters and people who were making donations to Democrats.
Many was an exhortation I don't have much time left in this thing in the second term.
If we don't get it together start rallying.
And start pushing back on these Republicans he mentioned Rush Limbaugh and sort of the stuff we've heard before but we don't get the fight going.
We're gonna run out of time.
What about that.
How much time as he had left and -- -- the current as the current.
Scandal headlines a fact that people who know because they've seen it done.
Are growing -- -- he is of course a radio talk show host he is a man of the left a fair minded America and he is the host.
Of radio -- to be PFW -- Replacement is many of those things but not -- -- the -- he is former senior advisor to president George W.
Bush and bush error.
He is a professor at the -- and university.
So we -- go boy is only when your.
Thank you only as a thank you for making time for the OK so.
Here's a question Garland you and I you talk about this the last time you were here.
And this is before all this stuff there but really.
A big agenda in a divided congress whether it's immigration -- all -- the gun control these other things.
Was always a tough facts that's always a tough -- for a reelected president.
How do you see.
Whether they are deemed to be contrived and political contrivance is of the president's opponents or not.
How do you see the current this current scandal narrative affecting what he -- I really don't see it affecting it in my opinion I think that the people who are most concerned about it are those who already believe the president I think that out and that that the broad side most Americans aren't really overly concerned with most of these things.
I could go bit by bit to tell you why how very simply aren't -- -- leaving Gaza well that's.
But the -- there is -- there is an accretion effect they can't consummation of fact where things happen one after the other and while Marilyn's right the people.
But there may not be a huge percentage -- Americans who desperately -- interest in what happened.
In bad guys you would talking points thereafter when you get to a narrative where people say when this is the game that you can't shoot straight there's always a problem.
Well look the Fox News poll on May sixth stated that 46% of the American people believe that in -- -- for instance there was a cover up by the government.
-- now we have the trifecta we have not only because we have the HP scandal -- which -- broke yesterday and -- with -- the -- admission.
Photos that that they targeted conservative groups solely because they were conservative groups to get my -- time on on the heels of an election so that the president.
To quote another famous Nixon.
-- no way I -- well you know that the American people have to know -- president is not a crook.
And now you've got three scandal swirling around the present and the present is not going to be able to get a domestic agenda or any other agenda done while these things are swirling around the way.
A -- -- -- there have been a lot of references to Richard -- but -- conquer -- there's also -- to -- -- that whatever -- like president like doing his second term.
Once your batting away scandal allegations and doing stuff.
It gets much harder to get people focused the Carlyle and ask you ever felt -- you know it gets a -- I did it justice for you that is on I'm Kennedy.
And what I said was this on the Ben -- thing.
He needs to stop making mistakes he made a mistake yesterday he said I didn't call -- a terrorist act -- -- -- and then the Washington Post that it was.
You didn't do this release he's not making mistakes and let that would sort of cool law for awhile but on the other two embarrassing maybe he needs to look.
Busy he needs to people need to be getting fired stuff has to be happening right so that he can.
Keep this from -- not yet.
Not in my opinion in my opinion they are manufactures candles and he is it as an example BHP.
A very valid investigation about a CIA leak.
If you don't know what they're looking for then you certainly don't know whether or not it was appropriate within that investigation.
To -- -- to get information in particular period if you -- read the investigation you can't say they shouldn't have done it may very well be.
The why -- this -- the FBI could have done.
Because let's not forget we're talking about CIA operations being compromised here they have.
-- have to investigate.
That no matter how you do that yes.
Investigate -- investigations but now you're a journalist but.
That's not -- that's not how we do this -- as if his boss I can promise you right now.
-- his boss had already been accused of intimidation.
Or -- unfriendly tactics with the press.
And then come out if if this had been by golly this -- -- Alberto -- Gonzales and this has come out.
It would be a real it would be a real scary thing in -- -- that we -- would be even better for.
-- there's there's no question about it there is a huge double standard in the in the press that created Obama.
Are the last people to take him down except when they themselves are being attacked the other circles.
The wagons are being circled.
Questions are being answered holder is is not forthcoming and the president I greeted Chris the president has got to do something the -- thing is an admitted.
Transgression why doesn't the president start.
And not having righteous indignation and actually righteous action against people who -- -- doesn't matter to users and -- and if what would that -- the validity of the claim the president needs to look like -- and he did a good job of that on the Paris yesterday.
Yesterday in his press count on the IRS.
Strong language bold.
People will be held accountable totally unacceptable he said the words that are necessary.
Now in this one it's a little bit more.
Tricky right because.
As -- on any who's been here before going out there's a leak probe here is that that.
Target of which may get pretty close there may be individuals who were close to him.
That are targeted in the -- so -- be careful about that but just for appearances -- does that sound.
Would it sound different to say something about not accepting.
Any sort of intimidation of -- Orders -- I don't know I think he should go the other direction I think he should support the FBI and and and the law enforcement and what they're doing I think he should say we are -- DD to protect the United States and at the CIA FC IA operations are compromise we're gonna do whatever is necessary.
As long as it's legal there is no indication.
That this is any illegal operation.
The runner president and within the context suggests that so where within the context of an investigation and it may lead he why is this thing they could possibly do would we be better off for them to do this investigation to look into the what the press is doing and -- -- and -- -- -- -- look at what the press -- good -- yeah I think that.
If it rounded up.
-- round them up indicated that this is what we're gonna do we're -- around enough and ask questions later we're gonna tap their post this is the president is a senator was against the Patriot Act in the fight to act and again Chris if George Bush people would have -- That this is something that he was considering he would have been excoriated by every one including its own or not -- Stop another 9/11.
And it was perfectly legal it will you don't that's the thing about nine elevenths that gets yes you don't know about right and you and who and who knows but -- but and a girl and I hate that you.
And as I'm acting from personal self interest.
Professional self interest here I'm sorry that you've been ganged up a little Honolulu another today Obama by the -- -- You right now.
That there has to be delicacy.
Whenever the federal government interacts with the press there you have to -- you have to be.
In this case instead of going to the -- to say it.
We'd like to -- commitments here can you help us out if -- No but if you sue us and taken to court we will pretend that were upset and then will we will pretend to be outraged and then you're gonna get the documents -- couldn't this have been handled at least.
In a way that was more sensitive -- ultimately predict.
I don't think you would have been wise for this reason if someone there was involved and they -- -- 2030 years of prison in front and invaded any reason the hard drives in its ratings are only at the time when you look at -- to get -- to get rid of information not an investigation people when people get scared.
All kind of silly things.
-- -- -- First Amendment has to be protected and it all cost.
And the president has to proceed gingerly as you correctly pointed out there are other ways that they could have gotten information.
Other than the heavy handed tactics that appear that he had been exercise census.
Rules and that -- -- we we in the media were very sensitive people at our lot is the wrong temperature we get very -- so imagine now that go compassionate conservative.
That's exactly exactly OK gentlemen we.
Your compassion and forbearance etc.
especially -- Okay here's what's -- -- says this is the press finally start deporting these things and people will start to notice.
You -- -- great way to get the press report on something -- -- about the press and that.
That's like their favorite thing to report on -- stuff about them so you'll see Agassi he's right on events today -- got okay we're gonna take a quick break but when we come back.
Talk about the IRS thing we've got Republican from Utah who will join us we'll talk about that when we come back -- it's different.
You -- if you've got the IRS operating in anything less than a neutral.
And non partisan way.
Then that is outrageous it is contrary to our traditions.
And people have to be held accountable and it's got to be fixed.
So won't wait and see.
What exactly all the details of the facts are but I've got no patients with a I will not tolerate it.
That was President Obama speaking at a joint press conference with one David Cameron the prime minister.
The United Kingdom and this is power play and welcome back the president says.
He's not willing to let the IRS get away with any funny business when it comes to the targeting of groups.
Groups that happened to be oppose the -- can have a large.
But that he's gonna get that the bottom will be gotten to.
And that he is going to take care of that as the facts come out but as the facts come out we learned yesterday that in fact the original report from the IRS which said that.
The the guilty parties were in one field office and we're low level staffers Washington Post is reported now.
That it is been much more far reaching ready to Washington.
And California and offices and maybe -- higher and higher levels so guess what house Republicans.
I don't think that the administration was quite up to the job of policing itself.
Chris Stewart is a Republican from the great state of Utah congressman -- -- thank you and I should point out by the way.
That you're the first person we've ever had -- this a world record.
For what we call when you fly around the globe -- nonstop flight around the World Cup circuit's does but you circumnavigate Iberia yes we -- -- the world aren't just pretty cool you and Magellan is cool but.
Yesterday he did you did a great educated a -- yeah.
After back into Columbus entered the all right so the question is you Republicans are -- -- distrustful of this administration when it comes to the question to love this IRS and we're hearing today.
Questions previously answered on the subject were not answered.
-- -- -- -- -- -- Well I looked as if history here Americans are outraged and frankly it's not just Republicans it's not just Tea Party conservative groups Americans were outraged.
And anger Republicans are concerned because we don't have a history.
We don't -- -- pattern of this administration.
And and that makes a lot of us cautious and I'm comfortable if I -- make this you know just kind of an overarching comment.
And there are certain foundational things that Americans have to believe are taking place for example our elections we expect him to be free and fair.
And if our guy doesn't win -- are caused doesn't -- we accept that as long as we believe that the people -- And you don't believe that the IRS or other government agencies are gonna be used against political points and when you see those kind of things happening it breaks down that foundation.
And that's why I think this is such a huge emotional issue for Americans again there are many liberals -- are those on the other side to me -- a greatly politically.
That they know that this is a bad deal.
So he needs some people need to get fired when you're right absolutely this is gonna happen pretty absolutely and and frankly not -- can't just go out have a token firings okay well we clean that out.
-- we got to know who was involved at what level they're involved and and look Chris you made the point earlier.
It wasn't a coincidence that they were conservative groups that are being targeted player they very clearly took particular measure from the administration -- -- reading that.
And we need to know why and and and do you either just absolutely ensure that this is just never occurs again.
What's interesting in all of this is the administration has.
And a lot of opportunity.
To show forthrightness on this on the AP and other things to him to come out and get ahead.
Of these stories.
But there's some -- and that's -- house Republicans because as we've seen.
This game will be.
When you're down when you're keep pounding on this it tends to intends to distract -- while they distract the administration doesn't distract you guys yes it does.
And -- you know just like we expect for the things that the administration to say we expect them to be true.
You have to expect the same thing or Republicans are others who -- -- this you want everything they seem to be true you want them not to be speculating wildly.
You want them to have had you know had some basis in fact and and hopefully they'll they'll do that.
But the initial reaction is -- necessarily based on investigations so far it's just based on what we know about just how.
This early people disagree and this that it just turns people so away from trust in government when they see these kind of things happen.
You know anything backdrop for all of this has been that we experienced the first successful large scale terrorist attack the United States since nine elevenths.
And then it sort of sharpened and focused people's thinking -- not yet passed.
You know we had hearings on that last week as you know I sit on the counterterrorism and intelligence -- -- subcommittee on Homeland Security.
And you know before we.
Before we jump into that maybe made this comment saying about how we want things to measure to -- -- there -- a lot of good things that happened again in that there were many things that took people reacted correctly and think thank you for that thank them for that.
But there were very clearly some meaningful breakdowns or otherwise -- -- be having this conversation.
You know and you you mentioned my air force background we we should quote -- -- Jackie -- -- what we have here is a basic failure to communicate and that's absolutely what happened here.
He had basic failure to communicate between international organizations in this case between the Russian intelligence organizations and our -- At a basic failure between federal organizations very clear examples that men between federal and local.
In all three cases there were some great.
We were going to skip or PowerPoint -- -- I want the Internet to hear your answer -- this question.
The president has.
A -- of agenda items credited her but he also has some nominees that he's trying to get through the senate -- that house Republicans have serious questions about it or labor.
-- EPA and other things.
What is the implication that the scandal stories on.
Well I think there's a multilayered implications to a number one is additions to conversations away from other important issues but that's the reality there -- certain this is what we're gonna talk about for a while until we begin to get a sense for where they're going.
The other is -- clearly weakens the president mean how many times have you seen headlines the last two or three days -- all the second term curse yet and and that's kind of the narrative right now.
Because it's really early into the second term as well you -- It was a lot less than the present -- a lot of -- once he's getting a couple months ago about Obama looks to avoid -- his second term -- how does he get out yeah.
Exactly you know and six months ago as well the Democrats are going to be in power for eternity now and Republicans are minority party forever.
And how quickly you guys you always have you -- about right that's.
I think -- -- thank you think permitting time for us OK Internet.
Sorry no apparent Wednesday but I wanted to be here that -- -- you know stuff so want to listen evidence that it may no Charles take a few of them analyst boot.
But here's the good news on public Jonathan Hunt up next and we will see you back here tomorrow.
