Happens in these particularly east dangerous situations you'll see it but tornados and then it will dissipate and that it also could have the chance to.
Rotate again so this is something we're gonna watch certainly throughout the day today the clouds are honest we are right for tornado activity.
We've got dew points in the upper sixties and seventies meeting that the moisture the available moisture is there we've got the upper level support of a very strong jetstream.
This is tornado Alley this is typically where we see tornadoes.
During this time of year in late may but it's been a big.
I believe we have someone on the on the phone with us you just.
Tell us where were coming from other had to go back to you what I believe we have someone.
On the ground in Oklahoma City that's gonna tell us about this actually -- we we do you have someone on the phone from Wichita.
Where we do have confirmation still waiting as you said for confirmation there in Oklahoma City as to whether that funnel cloud.
Did in fact.
Touch grounds as we wait on that and we let Janice check that out let's speak now with Randy Duncan who's the director of Wichita county emergency management we do have confirmed.
That a large and extremely dangerous tornado did in -- touched down near Wichita.
Near the mid continent airport there in Kansas Randy.
Can you tell us first -- thing about damage on the ground we heard -- -- that there are some initial reports that there has been damaged -- -- -- -- yes we have had reports of some initial damage fortunately.
Give them the -- large nature of the tornado the initial damage reports seem to be relatively light.
It even more fortunately there are no reports.
Fatalities or injuries at this particular point in time.
These tornadoes -- rain wrap this afternoon which is.
Little bit of an unusual feature for tornadoes here in the -- plane.
And as result the visibility for folks has not been near as high we have activated our outdoor warning devices.
At least three times here within -- caddie in the city of Wichita.
This afternoon and I think people are paying attention and that's one reason we're not seeing those injury reports at this time.
-- and Randy just to reading it reiterate for people what they're looking at on their screen right now is from Oklahoma City.
You in fact are reporting Boris from Wichita where you're the director of emergency management.
Repeat for us we heard earlier from -- -- there weren't facts and reports of people trapped or hurt that you say in fact now that is not the case.
At least as far as -- We have had no report.
Victims trapped or injuries here within the Wichita Sedgwick county area at this time.
-- we have had some minor reports of damage to property.
Which is I said earlier is a little bit surprising in a very fortunate -- give them the -- large size of the tornado that was indicated.
By our spotters -- by radar.
And and -- how large was it indicated by the spotters.
Well it was indicated is that because it's rain wrapped it's -- to give an exact.
Is but the the radar indicated that it was a substantial area of circulation.
You know perhaps a quarter of a mile -- slowly and as I say we haven't had time to determine how long exactly it was on the ground.
But it does appear to have dissipated at this point although we do remain under two active tornado warnings.
At this time as well as to severe thunderstorm warning.
You know -- we mentioned that this areas known as tornado Alley you're used to getting storms like these.
What that area specifically where this tornado touched down could you describe it to me was it a mainly a residential area.
Was it a business area.
It's sort of fringe area at the western side of the town.
There -- residential area surrounding it however there's also quite a bit of open area.
Would that being in the area area in the neighborhood rather the airport.
So we'll that's I think another of the reasons why we're not having the well large numbers of reports of damaged because.
It even though this is a fairly high population density area of particular area that it struck is probably one of our lower concentration for -- what's.
And why -- Arab Randy are rain wrapped.
Unusual in your area.
But typically because -- the the.
-- types of super -- that produced the tornadoes here are typically the LP or low precipitation type tornadoes.
And low precipitation type -- -- rather AMP.
-- -- tornadoes are usually very easy -- because the rain free base.
Allows for actual operation observations.
Of the phenomenon.
-- been an exception and we've had.
Rain -- precipitation -- tornado.
High precipitation rates now once again to our viewers at home.
You're looking at a live picture from Oklahoma City as we continue to monitor the situation there.
