Is the Senate Finance Committee where senators today are questioning a series of witnesses.
On the scandal at the Internal Revenue Service.
How it got started.
Where it went who knew who ordered it.
How far to the implications go that's all part of the fact finding mission now moving through the senate and sure to return to the -- soon enough.
This is power play and I and Chris -- welcome.
Now well most of the nation's attention is rightly focused on the issue.
What's happened to those were folks out in Oklahoma.
And certainly everyone in Washington goes about their business day with that.
In in their hearts and on their minds as they think about the devastation there Moore Oklahoma and elsewhere.
But business goes on here in town because there's a theory full slate of things to deal -- It's a big day for the immigration.
Measure in the senate we'll talk about that today.
But of course we will talk about what's going on with what seems to be right now.
The biggest problem for the Obama administration which is.
The targeting of the president's political enemies by the Internal Revenue Service.
And somebody who's been tracking this story with her typical as long.
And again what is Susan -- here she is the chief congressional correspondent for the Washington examiner -- It's been -- so today we've heard from Jack -- who was the White House chief of staff and now is the secretary of the treasury.
And we're going to hear from the former director of the IRS Douglas showman.
And we will also hear from.
Stephen Miller because I think -- receiving.
Well I don't know he's he's probably gonna do okay.
But he's gonna have another bad day basis -- guys -- Right I mean -- but you know that's the thing about scapegoat you gotta you gotta go into it ready to have get your points -- It's sending is he's a -- -- picked like this -- he was the guy really had anything to do with it should only be getting to the bottom up.
Who was actually behind is in reality not just -- scapegoat before the cameras this is what I would like to know personally that's why -- -- minute testimony today could be interesting because a lot of people feel like if there's anyone who really we should be talking to -- getting more information from its mister -- Who yes was a bush -- however he's a Democrat considered by some well I -- the Democrats who like registered it -- well he's a Democrat and he's known to be -- Democrat.
-- -- and any associations with prominent folks are higher and tell me that that.
Keys -- someone roll and politicizing the agency so I think he is a person who will have a lot more relevant information and the already outgoing acting commissioner was planning to -- in June anyway.
I was now -- putting his finger on as as the culprit here but the real issue with virus right now is.
And maybe -- -- start with some low level employees in misdeeds -- People Harris tell me to follow who knew when and -- they do about it.
-- don't find out.
Sad people knew a lot.
Sooner than that they -- saying and people higher up knew what we're learning that day by day it's getting higher and higher in the chain reaction just choosing Obama administration's problem.
How close can they get that scandal to President Obama.
Public and Republicans are trying to.
-- plate barrel of monkeys they're trying to connect the next monkey to the next one to actually Democrats trying to act it down while I'm doing and that's exactly how that's that's that's the scandal a -- game it was bill barrel of monkeys.
But it yesterday.
The white has changed its story about who knew what -- -- -- we should point out again this is important.
That the administration deals only with the question of this inspector general's report not.
The actual wrongdoing.
This sounds like a distinction without a difference but it makes a big difference.
Because it leaves lots of space for plausible -- I ability for administration officials if you focus just on what you -- about a specific report.
That keeps you away from oh yes somebody did mention to us one day that there were some concerns -- the Republican -- One million letters complaining about this so they're focusing just on the IG report that even inside the universe of that -- report they changed the story yesterday and said well.
It wasn't just the counsel's office that knew it was also the chief of staff that NATO and it was also the Treasury Department that new -- we promise we didn't tell.
The communications officer we promise we didn't tell the president.
And when those folks told you what they told you they weren't lying they just wanted to.
It is still blurry enough people -- -- wait what just happened I mean it is it's got that air confusion about -- spirit of president any connection.
Two -- to.
Any responsibility for what happened.
But the problem is that we have changing stories for the IRS which which makes everybody feel like what is what is what's the president doing it -- isn't he in charge 89 charts then you have the changing stories with a -- guys he attacks.
And it overweight and now they -- and they didn't now and then you have the situation with that president's office trying to get emails and things from.
Reporters -- what are they noted.
It -- altogether.
Makes -- -- White House look so culpable because.
Maybe you maybe didn't know what are -- trying to cover up here I think that that's of I again as the White House this problem it all looks bad for that even though as the stories on all these situations change day by day yes I think it's it isn't a problem.
Of competency for the White House this is probably a what are they trying to deny now what what culpability and -- -- to.
-- -- -- -- I -- -- on that very topics.
AA if you follow me at ceased firewall you have you already have that because out -- already tweeting to -- I would have already sent you that massive.
In which I wrote that it's complicated that what.
The White House does about this is complicated by a few things when they don't look like it's really a big scandal and you know Al hunt who isn't.
Let's look he he is no Tea Party here -- And others are now saying hey administration it's time to put somebody over this thing that has some credibility.
So that there is some assurance that this is going the right way or otherwise your detractors are gonna keep going after you.
I -- today though that for the president it's more complicated.
Because remember this the most important core constituency inside the Democratic Party.
Our government worker unionized government workers.
That's it ash means at.
Gee Bob and a big one is the union of treasury employees.
Weapon to represented many of the 100000.
IRS workers if you start swinging a wrecking ball at the IRS these people are going to be.
Set against is be very very careful about this but the whole idea called -- weekend.
I know from -- on Capitol Hill that this idea that the Tea Party groups out there are being targeted at conservative groups out there being turned.
Is not new David talked about on Capitol Hill senators have been waiting letters around there -- been hearings he's been.
Iris denial for months and months now about the Associated Press -- prison not know about it it was public information people are talking about it it was on the news.
-- that this was happening so the idea that.
This was happening right before an election these groups are being stifled that in some cases I know senators talk about the -- of votes in some ways being suppressed because he's Tea Party groups -- allowed to organized.
And and get them you know get their message across before the election.
Mean that's really the heart of the issue here is that did the president tried -- did the administration try to do something influence it's going twelve election.
-- -- very serious nothing.
-- it is to make that case.
And you know and continue to do so through these hearings I think that's going to be a big problem for the White House I don't think it's something that -- and just dropped.
Some months I think they'll keep it going the way they have kept.
That controversy surrounding how -- -- -- attacks were handled before and after I think that they will keep discount.
You know one of the things -- like the Internet through is that it's more.
And -- -- points out that I miss Truman gave 500 dollars to the Democratic National Committee -- has thereby.
-- string the question of whether or not he is a Democrat sounds and it sounds like you thank you mark tank.
The last -- tonight I have as.
The -- -- many points this -- the chance that it did these investigations are 20/20 hindsight going back and president says he wants to make sure that this doesn't happen again but.
Do we now approach the point.
-- overload where there's so many hearings and so much people talking mess up that as you say that narrative thread and all of this starts to slip through our fingers.
It could individually and he -- -- our also Sonny IRS and some people are noticing lately wait.
-- nothing -- he's taking all the limelight away from the -- what you really need to show shine bright -- find out what happened people were killed here.
I -- and security of the embassies all these things that are so.
So there is this threat that is all being overshadowed.
And now all of this big.
You know mess.
-- hearings but on the other hand it also combines.
Creates a larger narrative about.
What's happening really from the top down in our country you know -- what -- know what.
How honest is the White House being with the press widgets -- country about being Ghazi honestly being about.
They're targeting -- air accident that they try to covered up.
And so I think it's good to have a light shown on that issue as well and and and I think that's -- Republicans also are trying to use to their advantage on capitol Democrats you can tell -- that's the case because of -- watch these hearings.
They're becoming a lot more political it Democrats are just really are up -- arms if they -- up and they're defending a lot of things that I think normally you would see them defending.
And part of it's just really out of fear right now that they are -- -- and -- politically.
-- -- situations.
In the thank you were -- you're -- upon us the Internet -- grateful to have been enlightened.
And you and I wouldn't -- thank you for those are blue fingernail polish personally show that is that since when does that start -- plus the spring color accuracy do you feel funny.
Have to ask mrs.
power -- they weren't doing that -- -- they were doing that in Boston but they really but they will still -- go to jail but pretty soon.
Is everything you make and -- -- us and we're never gonna take a quick break when we come back.
I'm going to ask for you were forbearance as we discuss immigration issues today because I don't wanna talk about a lot of -- stuff but today's the big day so we need to move the inventory on this so that you understand it and are not caught blind -- in the future.
We are here to equip and empower you Internet these -- to do so and stick around.
And those are officers.
The immigration customs enforcement agency part of your friendly friends at the Department of Homeland Security.
And this is -- welcome back now those folks.
Rob we're probably part of a big -- union that represents those Border Patrol agents customs agents and other folks.
Who recently came out and said that they don't think that the compromise legislation on immigration moving through is a good idea -- they think it's a bad idea.
Because they think it will open the system to fraud.
they are just the latest in a number of people.
From starting on the right.
More rumbling on the left back and forth complaining about the so called gang of legislation the senate.
It's -- big day today because they're trying to get this sucker out of the Senate Judiciary Committee they have gone like -- weed wacker through a hundred.
Not kidding -- hundred amendments they're trying to push this thing through.
But if it proves harder in the longer it stays on the shelf of war critics emerge.
Especially critics -- standing like those so what.
Does the future hold people who know or at least are willing to surmise this.
Include Chopra shot he is the president of solidarity strategies and the director of the Latino project act that makes him today.
Big blue union guy that makes him a Democrat that makes him a dear friend of this Internet telecast welcome -- -- Here and Javier Ortiz making his sophomore here -- -- on the dominant Internet political telecast of the 1130 half hour.
He is the former advisor to the former governor of Rico loose which I don't know is founded associate member of the national.
Conference of Hispanic legislate words.
And you are a Republican as demonstrated by your red -- yes absolutely that's true okay he owns it he's not a guy -- his orange here I don't know he's he's going someplace that that.
No minute minute minute and how do your -- you don't you hate to give me I have trouble we're gonna make it that bad because -- -- -- W views of the big twelve in the service hurts -- live in my house anyway.
Now the question is this guy's.
Chuck I know you.
Been generally supportive of what they're trying to do this and it gets something right and I know that you feel the time -- now I'm here I've read you -- peace.
Not too long ago where you talked about the need to move the ball but the only -- -- man.
I think that it's important to have an American history of don't respect from our friend Javier but.
I do believe something has -- To -- definitely something we'll be done I just hope the good people don't get in the way of getting something done I think yesterday it was a good step forward I was happy with some of the commitments that came out of it but that he said coming -- from the left there were things I wasn't happy with but there are more things that I -- -- -- it seems like.
They should be enough -- has the -- to get something to make sure that we have something fair for these families trying to become Americans.
The air your fellow Republicans in the -- saying.
Go ahead and -- your selves that senate do whatever you want on this stuff because when you bring that down here Bob good -- and the boys on the House Judiciary Committee said.
At best we're going to be able to move this and bite size pieces we're not going to be able to do comprehensive reform.
In -- its interest in this actually agree with stuff we -- we need -- -- we need to move the ball forward and I think that.
-- to me is interstate.
That there are folks that are experts in in border security Border Patrol doing what they do that they're saying this is not good for the country so that should give some -- some -- -- to see where places.
This needs to be -- following.
And certainly it.
What's this whole thing that in in very dangerous ground if you well because if you have the experts in this.
Space that do this every day saying this is not good it will be difficult for us to -- it -- open system fraught.
The house is really gonna have -- difficult -- moving this -- it's a shame because I think senator rubio.
Has done a great job in moving the ball forward working with the colleagues on the democratic side I don't want to call on the left because I think that.
We the various I think that case there is -- the middle the middle of the country.
Is is coming together asked evidenced by what senator rubio is is trying to do but if this doesn't work if this doesn't.
Happen and it's getting more and more complicated and we've talked about this before you know this it's getting harder to do you know scandal stuff over there -- -- that.
Washington president chuck always likes to say.
We can walk and chew gum at the same time Washington cannot walk to go -- can barely walk let alone walk and chew gum simultaneously.
The is it good or bad for prospects for passage of an immigration bill.
That there's so much distraction in Washington today it on one hand it increases the -- that something get through that being the full focus.
Of political commentators and talk radio and MSNBC and all that stuff there's so there's that but on the other hand people are just plain distracted.
I think there's there's a reason why the congressional approval rating is probably less than 50% because people know the same thing that what you're saying is -- It's hard for congress to get things done and people think that the system is broken -- this immigration policies a prime example I don't know the -- and another way if I've got people on the left.
And people on the right that -- -- that -- that something good may be happy because of most of Americans aren't on the far right or on the far left they just wanna see something -- they wanna see problems fixed they wanna see our country move forward.
But congress sometimes has a hard time doing it they let them get distracted it does become a good thing because -- -- other places politically in my world they don't get something done Katie bar the door because I'm coming after he -- he'll be there for -- for those Republican.
Congressman in Texas chuck -- -- beat chuck -- as soon as soon as some some choice words that you'll be hearing in an ad how the air.
I want to give you the last -- for Republicans.
We know the contrary we know the shape of this but from a practical perspective.
When he comes time to move legislation and do stuff.
Can't house Republicans make a credible argument that doing this piece meal is superior to doing this on -- It will be.
Difficult for them to.
See that -- in and move forward doubt wave really is because what we're really talking about an immigration reform is.
Bringing people to be part of the system.
It -- troops to move forward and and contribute to the country.
By the way it's not all of us -- so we have folks that in India.
Who are very interest in this efforts in other parts of the country and parts of the world that our interest in an immigration reform high tech.
Companies -- interest it in this.
And we can have a big debate about should we be educating more people Hispanics are included in high tech.
Jobs it to take those so I think this very complicated for house Republicans.
Not to do something because this is -- just -- Hispanic -- happens.
To be a big number associated with -- but there's big business also that's interest in -- and high tech companies and other folks are pushing very hard.
To make this work if Republicans.
Need to understand that the economy.
Is also going to be impacted if they're not moving.
That's how they are -- not only insightful he is a -- here he is a sincere because he has correctly predicted he -- the next segment BA.
We'll have a guest with us.
We'll delve into this question of at -- -- here we thank you for you -- forward looking message your insights -- I need you to statement as we gotta talk about this okay.
All right all right he got a good he's gonna do it even though his agent says now all right Internet I want to take a quick break and come right back -- around.
And that is what it looks like when senators.
Squabble with each other on the Senate Judiciary Committee as they try.
There dog on this to get a big bill that deals with what they call comprehensive immigration reform out of that committee and out to the senate for a full vote.
Then it will of course face doom in the house but part of it all long process that may eventually take the country to a coherent immigration policy.
And this is power play welcome back.
And I will get your chest will be -- -- I'm gonna do it.
I'm gonna do it but I can't wait to introduce to you are -- -- you Michael Becker that he is president and CEO of the Internet association which is an industry trade group.
For people who make you Internet who provide use to us so we thank you and your members and Chopra says with a stealth now guys a big issue that they're fighting over there today.
And they thought about it yesterday -- hatch Republican from you talk.
Said I like your bill.
Any more high tech -- and I need more high tech pieces to bring the immigrants who work at companies like those two.
-- part of your association Michael.
But guys in the union world say.
-- -- -- -- -- This isn't -- necessarily good thing you're.
Creating carve outs for big companies and high tech companies and high skilled workers.
And what about that so there's this is proving to be problematic because they definitely want -- -- they definitely want those kind of Republicans vote.
So let's just you lay this out force -- let's make this information on Michael.
I think the important thing when it comes achieve high skilled visas is it's not just about carving out special workers for Internet companies -- high tech companies.
But for every high skilled worker.
Internet companies able to hire are able to -- from five to twelve American.
There's so there's a multiplier effect here where by bringing in some high skilled workers that are experts in.
You computer engineering or developments -- that they're able to hire -- whole team around them.
And it creates more just America it's a great story it's a great story -- How would don't disagree yes I would think that there's got to be a reason why.
These Republicans are pushing for this piece now this is coming -- from -- cynical view but.
I know that.
A lot of these people are going to make sure that business interest to -- for comprehensive immigration reform at a certain level.
The unions meet.
Or worried about -- America which I hope what you say brothers' true I'm not calling you are by no means but I want to believe but I just don't believe right.
Lot of long enough about having a horse that mr.
somebody or by yourself -- saying that you know I'm worried about people being out of work you don't see.
People were -- the low -- jobs because nobody wants to do those that backed up by just wanna make sure.
If we gonna bring people in an amber would have twelve American workers are for everyone I think you see a lot of Democrats and let's get this done right now.
Right and salute and and there is skepticism Michael from.
Democrats anytime they hear Republicans offer something made some big businesses behind it they assume that -- -- it is that but among Republicans.
There's so little for them to like in the legislation overall that they might be excused for asking for more help on something like this.
This is about jobs period.
It's about keeping America competitive.
You know few issues that are in this immigration abilities he dressed you know one win foreign students coming here to United States in the best educational world.
It's important that we keep -- here we've heard stories of people coming over.
Getting a great -- here in the United States wanted to start company in the United States work for one of our companies and being forced to leave -- go back to their home country where they.
Create -- new start up and there is competing with us and we're not getting economic value here.
Those companies are paying taxes and provides our economy.
And you know -- -- and it's OK to be a little cynical it's fine.
But the Internet industry and high tech it's very different I think -- the rest of the economy in this regard and they're hiring these people they're trying to hire more Americans -- they can.
But relaxed you know I'm young people today are not -- -- studying the stem fields science technology and math and we need to encourage that in this build yet.
But by bringing in more H one -- postal workers they're able to hire more Americans and they're able to keep.
United States companies competitive here and have -- stay here.
That's -- discussion that is gonna take place in a big -- soon on this is about low skilled workers.
Because there are carve outs in this legislation.
For the construction industry and others to import foreign workers to do those kind of jobs that you're talking about.
And this balance about.
How many of what kind.
Creates a lot of political pressure points on left and right and everything else.
Do -- that you say this compromise that I'm sitting in that room and I wanna see this done thinking about are related to think about our players think about immigrants where they were Irish or Latino.
That there has become -- I would be -- -- that we're thinking of common sense of that if we need and there's a case to be made for H one B visas or for that destruction these.
If there's a way to find the comments as to both ankles so we can get Pakistan that was fair to people who wanna be Americas that's what the -- should be focused on -- on their constituency groups on the left all of Iraq had.
How do we get this done so eleven million immigrants to become citizens start paying taxes and be -- part of America there should be common sense on both sides to get that done I think sometimes that's what's lacking in the US and really feeling optimistic.
I am an optimist -- Yeah that's that's -- -- are OK I think about it I am optimistic -- I think this bill's gonna get out of the Judiciary Committee hopefully this week maybe as early as today.
And you know we'll see what happens on the senate floor this a long process.
Again -- -- deserves a lot of credit bill's not perfect nobody says is that affecting you know some of those conservative Republicans most Liberal Democrats coming together compromise it's important.
Michael thank you that we thank you as always -- -- -- nothing is perfect but perhaps you crapshoot today so how about some of your chest.
For the love of America how come no one ever knows what is going on with their departments.
They're either really -- -- lazier obviously hiding something well you know that maybe all who knows.
Smooth SNB 157 says this is a failure of leadership -- -- about the IRS.
Please take responsibility for their actions this administration cannot figure out who did what and who knew.
Who knew what -- it doesn't matter who appointed them this administration kept them with their wrongdoing did nothing about them.
And its veterans that are there's a lot of that -- but Google is having 1953.
Who is that something could save photos via Twitter.
And he says Susan is always great and she is great but here for a minute to part with you have it.
And I like the blue fingernails.
I'm not so sure I'm not so sure I'm old now a little bit.
And that's it -- today more green.
Is in for Jonathan on the -- so you'll enjoy that and the only PowerPoint we have for today is that if you are able if you are able to help the folks at Oklahoma they should be -- They sure do needed and if you got a little -- to give or -- just to prayer wattage offered that up today and be mildly urging to you today Internet.
-- on them and last night so just think about that have a great day and we'll see you back here tomorrow.
