Francisco if you heard the new Xbox system I mean much if you have one of these games as a home Xbox PlayStation but I just for games anymore -- I only -- -- -- which one -- down.
But I have what I home and output athletic game on it in six straight months it's it's used for other things almost like an apple TV you can find different apps on there -- -- -- TV -- Smart TV really.
And Xbox -- taking the next step.
In that whole process joining us live to Steve but he's editor in chief of IG in dot com you can find they're upset -- dot com very -- as well.
Steve thank you thanks for joining us was ever Cisco.
You're very welcome thank you.
You know our question is about Xbox one obviously -- -- in layman's terms I was trying to explain people homeless you don't know what a game system is the most it'll probably watching at this point have an idea.
On that Xbox one missed the mark with this new product.
What depends on what you think they're goals should have been I don't think they missed the mark in terms of reaching out to the mainstream consumer and saying.
We are a replacement for all the other entertainment devices that are competing for attention in your living room.
They want to replace the cable box essentially so united can.
Stream TV on your Xbox you can watch cable you can.
Engage -- social networks.
It's not a very compelling message to gamers of course and a -- -- -- consumption patterns that a lot of new generation folks have for media but.
I think they accomplished what they want to accomplish which is to say we are an entertainment solution for everything you need in your living room.
Do you think they're going more towards -- the PlayStation and we kind of mix -- mean you see David I sauce on Nestle at this in the -- the Internet for some nights in an in person.
-- the ability to detect people's movements and faces.
It's kind of like they have the -- from a few years ago yet on steroids but also the PlayStation idea where they're making it more of a connected TVs in an Xbox.
Was the one a kind of stayed more towards gaining in this case as you mentioned.
The -- trying to be maybe something for everyone.
Well I don't know I mean they they have the connect functionality now on the Xbox-360 so it's something that all three of the big console manufacturers have tried to solve.
The problem is right now all that generation is you know all that technology is first generation.
It's all very much proof of concept waiting for -- -- -- something really intuitive really interactive of those technologies.
What about the fact that some gamers are -- that the games from Xbox-360.
Won't work on the new console.
-- -- know they'll have to keep to console basically hooked up.
But the big problem writes that the problem that Microsoft -- US assault.
You know I myself have a tremendous catalog of Xbox-360 games.
The problem well -- the solution for me is that I'm not gonna get rid of my Xbox-360 but now I have two game consoles when maybe I only need one.
That a bigger problem for Microsoft assault with regard to gamers and expectations -- How are they gonna handle the used game market how are they gonna handle game -- how are -- gonna handle -- games to friends.
Right now we don't have a lot of clarity on that but it sounds like Microsoft is locking that stuff out in an attempt to get even more revenue out of this box.
In -- you -- you had the Xbox 316 and a wide variety of games so what is your.
Gut on this -- step away from the professional side of things.
Where you give us we'll get back to that but as as as someone who likes them obvious or use them both.
And they were you surprised me happy were you shocked were hitting anything me as a person who knows Xbox 316 I don't know Xbox-360 that -- -- why I'm asking you.
-- we as a professional somebody who covers the business of this industry.
I wasn't very surprised that made sense to me as a gamer I was little let down.
I've already got something in my house that I can watch TV on why don't need to redundancies -- technology that allows me to do that I expected to hear more about games but.
-- Look here are new -- piece here -- new franchises here the new game play experiences you can have our console.
-- and that we really wanted to hear but I'm not surprised we didn't.
On the on the question coming -- one of our producers actually that I had gotten to yet and I'm glad you brought up about the Xbox original TV program like you know.
The halo live action series we talked about that a few weeks ago -- on on this show.
-- -- -- -- -- -- That's a big deal that's a -- play from Microsoft right.
It legitimizes them as a TV content provider and it also bolsters one of their biggest IPs halo by its association with Steven Spielberg.
In this media format that is much more mainstream I mean people are much more likely to accept -- as a television show.
-- as a video game and maybe some of those folks who first encountered as a TV show.
Will become curious about the game and Microsoft figures they can transform those TV fans in the gamers.
Yes I think of -- -- back to you can't touch on as well now back to the business on things and that is.
You know there there are so many different avenues out there nowadays and you have a connected TV type folks -- -- the apple -- -- Brett did have the ability to get these things on your computer -- on your television you can stream things.
-- that you have the gaming situation you have the ability to you know chat with grandparents who are 56 hours away there it seems like both.
Nice are you are talking Sony here but with Sony -- spots you have two different companies and other was doing the same thing of course when -- -- is as well.
Really trying to expand out and grab more and more and more of the audience to guess the question comes then is there a way for them.
Is somehow still specialize.
Like -- game well that's a good.
That's a big question right are they sufficiently differentiated enough from each other to stand on the marketplace.
And are they -- offering a service that substantially different from what we're already getting on our tablets are Smartphones.
And I'm not sure they are.
In the gaming space -- we've seen things like -- -- and what even the PC.
Development -- become highly democratize and both of those spaces you've got kick starter which makes funding a lot easier you've got digital distribution models which means you don't have to go through Tripoli publisher.
And is ready access to development tools.
So our big question is.
Is Microsoft's development environment for the Xbox one going to be so close that there's not a lot of room for innovation.
I think that's gonna -- there competitiveness in the market more than the actual hardware specs.
My last question for you is do you think.
Overall -- the busy professional this was a Smart move.
I absolutely think it was a Smart move look I mean Microsoft spends a lot of time has a lot of intelligent people working on this project.
I think it's a very Smart move for them they're trying to capitalize on.
This mainstream exposure right I mean gaming is becoming ubiquitous now in and we have all these different devices that connect this to each other in the content we want -- consume and all these various ways.
My concern though is as I said if this new generation that's coming up it's consuming television and content the way that Microsoft -- there.
A lot of people we know don't even have cable television subscriptions anymore so where they fit in the Microsoft model.
But Steve -- great question I think we're learn more -- -- you hit the nail on the head too with the three coming up here in the future weeks in Los Angeles out.
I suspect that Microsoft gonna have some surprises for everybody when they get there.
-- there are some good questions though especially the 360.
When I read that for the first time even though I don't have an Xbox-360 but have a lot of friends that do.
It surprised me bits -- curious to see how about -- the third party some -- gets involved as well.
It's a very interest in time for us.
It is it is Steve bus from San Francisco IGN dot com that's their website great to come and I'll really appreciate your expertise and you see right there there.
The front page of the website talking about Xbox.
All sorts of information -- -- original TV series in the way they're going about what the whole halo franchise.
Are more information at IGN dot com Steve thank for joining us why do you back and we'll probably see down there it the big sky conference -- the big.
