Welcome back to on the hunt on Jonathan Hunt.
Also -- serve this country in Iraq and Afghanistan as a US marine.
I he then went to Georgetown University take a law degree but -- -- -- Decided he wanted to change tack.
Go to Syria as a war zone that report he did.
And then lost all guessed he went missing the last tweet.
From -- he was a regular tweet described being at a birthday party that was thrown for him.
By members of the Free Syrian Army that -- the main rebel group in Syria it's believed that he then headed towards Damascus.
And was taken by captors unknown.
On the outskirts.
All of the capital city.
All of Syria.
His parents have been night keeping quiet perhaps only advice all the officials who like to work.
A lot of back channels in these kind of a situations and not so risk.
Disturbing anybody or annoying anybody.
Or tipping anybody over the edge who might be holding him.
But yesterday they spoke to me at length you may have seen some of the interview on The Fox Report last night they are amazing people -- simply worried about this on the as -- Parents would be I Austin Devi and mark ties why they believe best -- -- Went to Syria in the first place listen -- this.
-- and I he wanted to get the story he felt like it was a story.
Worth telling he has that special heart for children.
And he -- to have the passion for history.
And he felt that at an accurate record and for these children to know I -- what shape them and what the future's gonna look like -- am.
I think -- -- Profoundly -- -- for him.
And Jennifer if if I could add.
It's been just over a year since he first went to Syria and at the time he went.
The prevailing reports that we would see in aren't.
News here were.
About something -- taken place however it couldn't be confirmed because.
There were no reliable.
And and that you know I know drove him crazy he said you know this story needs to be reported and he he -- I think I can do it.
So that's that's what went in there.
-- entice was a freelance while he was in Syria he had photographs and stories.
Published in the Washington Post published by McClatchy news service he'd also done some work with CBS I -- told two reporters who worked with him.
And alongside him in Syria they -- say he was an extraordinary hardworking and curious man.
Obviously is a former marine guy he may have felt better equipped to handle those kind of situations.
Then all of -- all of us might do -- that perhaps is what led him to think he -- head towards Damascus we simply don't know what half.
Happened at that point.
The his parents as you could see -- very very composed.
-- watch now as I -- to -- and Debbie.
About how they find -- that this -- Had gone missing.
As it turned out Debbie was.
In the wilderness on -- canoeing trip with friends.
And in the week that she was gone.
You're right we were in daily contact with him in one way or the other either an email.
A phone call -- Skype.
A FaceBook post.
And so we knew every day pretty much what he was doing.
And then three or four days past.
Where there wasn't any word from -- not only to me at home but to any one.
We knew at that time he was.
Planning on moving from place to place in the country and so for a couple of days it didn't concern is too much because we knew that.
Many times journalists there.
You don't move.
Quietly in there aren't able to be in touch when they're actually in transit from one place to another.
But after about three days.
I contacted his editors.
And they were also concerned.
And then I got a call from his editor at McClatchy news.
And telling us that they were very concerned that they had had contact with them.
The very next -- I got literally five minutes later was from the US State Department saying they'd been notified that he was missing.
As soon as -- got back from her trip and got back -- communication which was about two days later.
I had a this terrible phone call event.
Yeah so that's that's how we found out.
Well I had just come off water with.
Five -- -- -- women we've been in the wilderness for -- week.
And of course the first thing I get -- com mark.
And he fed.
Eating Goetz says strong play it and decide if you want to be alone or with your friend.
Because I have something I need to -- end.
-- -- -- It was completely and expect that.
-- hair at that option had gone missing in such a way that.
There is deep concern about that.
Now as I mentioned the parents -- and Debbie.
Lost heard from Austin right Iran the second week.
Although all -- is last tweet as I mentioned was sent that on August 11.
One video has him edged which is parents say the -- clearly shows Allstate.
It was released on YouTube Iran due September 26 we obviously cannot confirm the veracity -- of it but as they say his parents say.
That indeed was their son he was being.
-- shown being led by group pile of man opposite a stony hill being made to -- he appeared.
About his situation at the time but he gave few clues as to who.
Might be his captives and in fact some people believed it may have been produced by -- -- -- -- holding him.
To try to throw.
Those who -- looking for him off the send to put the blame on on a different group in fact.
But I talked to -- and Debbie -- A -- -- was done and continues to be done.
And how the the community of journalists really -- tried to help to find Austin in the Oregon.
The very first thing that happened was that.
Literally the the global.
Community and journalist.
Asking everyone they knew especially people led.
Had contacts within Syria.
Did that -- other journalists other people in the region.
All of their contacts to see if they can locate -- And I don't know what to tell you accepted.
You know from the beginning we've always hope that they'll be something the next day.
And you don't.
We received or saw on YouTube.
In late September that.
Really cut us both ways it was great to see that he was alive.
But it was terrible to see that he was.
In the hands of unknown people.
For me it doesn't matter include it says.
Are they check -- are whether he's been trade data are anything like that.
The important thing to me and that he'll ever -- it's holding -- Well being is with compassion and release him safely to have -- knowing that that is the bottom line and then that's important thing.
And if if -- had.
You know again for these last many months we've been reaching out to everyone we can think.
And other countries are our own country has been very supportive.
And yet we've had no.
No account responsibility.
Even after the video you -- -- claimed responsibility for.
At this point we we frankly have not heard definitively.
Who is holding -- and so we're reaching out to everyone we can.
Well and that.
Fifteen government has told -- that they are not holding him.
But they have a sure that.
Bet they well look for him and say well keep campaign and they well returning him safely to.
In -- same way that if a child went missing in me that you might expect.
Government entities to help with that.
We have the same expectation of the -- government.
Well you know clearly we follow every bit of news coming out of Syria and in the region around Syria.
So every time bears.
A massive explosion in Damascus every time there's.
A new report of of increasing violence.
You know where is Austin is he safe is he.
Near these activities near these things that are happening or is he being kept somewhere safe so he's protected.
I I worry I think about what he's doing every day does he have.
Access to any information does he know that we're doing everything we can to bring him home -- that I -- he -- it is hard.
I hope he sees it and feels it.
So does the things I think about but most of all I think about every day both of us what can we do to help get him home.
Parents so desperately trying to get this summer home from Walt is.
Possibly arguably the most violent conflict.
On the -- right now you can just feel that pain.
Obviously it's not a -- them it's not just about journalists trying to Ted help via.
I had to back -- government as well the State Department.
The has a role in a very important role to play -- obviously and now officials in these kind of situations.
Often advised the family to be relatively quiet about this in the the -- family.
How -- vote dumb that they haven't spoken that very often but I Austin yes today when they finally did agreed to told to us.
Whether they think that -- -- nothing's being done on an official government to government level to find that some.
The second phone call I got about -- situation was from the US State Department and they have been.
Pulling her hands and close to us that throughout this entire -- or deal.
We know that within the limits of what they're able to do of course we don't have formal relations with Syria.
Our government communicates with Syria through the Czech Republic.
And we we know we're confident that they are doing everything they -- from the diplomatic standpoint.
To help bring -- home.
And we certainly.
Encourage them and encourage.
Other people in government.
Here in the US to do everything they can.
I -- I do you believe that I had everything that's humanly -- a law it -- likely being done.
If anyone thinks they have a special connection.
With someone that can help enact significant weighing.
I certainly -- turn that down.
Jennifer if if I could add.
You know we we are asking constantly for anyone who.
Can can help us in some tangible way to reach out to us and the way to do that is through the website we put together.
It's it's www.
Austin ties family dot com.
And we very much appreciate anyone that hears this -- sees this.
And believes they can help us please please let us know.
Mark -- that mentioning at the end the family's website we'll put it up on the screen for you right now there it is.
All -- Tyson family.
Dot com by the way at the -- of that interview I asked -- Tice wolf the first woods she would say.
To Austin or she will say she believes he absolutely will one day.
Be home she told me I can't tell you the -- publicly.
Or can't say it on TV where her actual words.
And then she went on to say that the that ties his.
Other six children all planning of which weapons -- which they will pummel Alston.
When he does come home and Debbie -- went on to say it will be a moment of great joy eight.
Just before -- wring his neck.
Great family as you can see there an interview that went from -- is to hope and even.
Laughter we wish them the very best and once again we do not know and nobody knows it seems exactly who Walston was -- way he was precisely what he was doing.
When he went missing but that is a family.
Mom and dad who just want that somehow.
