-- And vast seaside romance.
Was between the president Barack Obama and New Jersey governor Chris Christie as they went down on the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore tell folks that did despite hurricane -- it was it -- -- Out there on the beach and this is power play and and Chris -- -- and happy Friday in my Adam's apple is here to tell you.
That it's Friday and you should be enjoying yourself despite it being.
This interestingly -- Disgusting.
Opt in Washington DC we will talk about not just new Jersey's like -- -- -- -- Virginia -- they were harbingers.
Of the future.
Men that took place in 2009.
What will they tell us about 2014.
Mid terms and beyond quite so quite so we will also talk about out.
The IRS yes we will yes we will we will talk about what's happening as congressional investigators make their way down to Cincinnati.
And environs to talk to the agents who have gotten the blame from their superiors.
-- there irrational exuberance.
When it came to targeting conservative groups.
We'll also talk about.
The hot seat for Eric Holder as he looks to.
-- journalistic fears.
And keep president.
Obama on board and ride out the current scandal storm dissenting is agency.
We would do all of that -- that it doesn't when you think about it -- got a good.
But I know that it will be good it will be more than just sounding good it will be good.
Because Josh -- -- is here he is the executive at a tour fancy title.
National Journal hotline.
He is available at hotline Josh.
This is of course commitment because if you are as much.
Eight politics -- as me -- enough to Mary if you watching this you should be following.
You should be reading up on because it is the dispatch and it's the most trade publication for anyone who wants -- what's going on any team in the country after.
You have to -- our.
Power play first so that you have you know jokes and stuff but then after that you should you should know things that -- together yes they go to get -- they go together.
Chris Christie looking good for reelection in New Jersey yes.
He's looking good -- but it's actually interest in how closely he feels he needs that.
Connect himself to President Obama to get to one Democrat -- it's it's it's you know you look at the polls this is huge lead over Barbara Bono a state legislator.
Who is not exactly love -- -- her own -- -- -- Republicans.
But -- Christie still feel the need.
To show that he's working with the president.
He's not criticize it into too hard.
And that they're having these photo ops of them -- football together.
-- the Jersey Shore of them walking together survey the damage that's a necessary photo op certainly for Christie -- is still.
Knows he's and a top state right now he's.
You know pretty solid favorite to win reelection because the numbers the polls right now are going to be as favorable as they are Election Day and her arm and -- they've -- -- be an election.
And the thinking here is -- Obama and wants Christie to give him cover.
About I'm doing it looks I'm doing everything that I can and I'm working hard to repair the damage from -- Shubert storm sandy.
But for Christie what it does and this is good politics on his part Democrats on the state level can't attack.
Ask him for them.
People are frustrated because do recovery and relief efforts have not been as speedy as -- promise.
Democrats can't attack him because if they do by extension they're attacking their oppressed.
-- very savvy political movement is set for Obama she needs Republican friends and -- the blonde Republican outside of Washington has been able to give a lifeline.
Not not many many Republican voters over with the problems Israelis have been at least you have bipartisan imagery which is on the the president plans need.
And it in any any really got hit on the the real problem that Christie could face he's getting a lot of insulation by how.
Having the president there giving him rhetorical support this clean up in the wake of lurking -- -- has not been particularly efficient.
Has not been particularly effective.
In the wake of Katrina.
Every all the knives -- out against bush in the Louisiana state officials for their slow -- company cleanup.
-- to be quite as bad a New Jersey but there are a lot of communities that are still pretty storm ravaged.
And Christie has gotten largely a pass he's got -- help on that front from the very Byrd Democrat who was criticized.
And ironically of course and with Katrina Kathleen Blanco.
And was the democratic governor of an increasingly Republican state who is at odds with a Republican.
Kathleen -- -- George W Bush's approval -- -- a consequence of Katrina Kathleen Blanco got.
She got ended.
And -- was a lose lose situation both of their political careers post-Katrina blew up rush never recovered.
-- is it is it is -- -- -- that is adamantly pro women run for congress and a body was -- reelection either but but like it was a total total that you decided it was a disaster the end of her political career I don't even know where -- Ray -- now.
You know -- -- wherever he ran for something.
Chocolate city is no more.
All right so before we move on -- Virginia which is there's sort of more interest contest.
Can he rebound with.
Republicans if he does in fact want to run for president he has.
This -- been a good strategy for winning in New Jersey.
Republicans in Iowa New Hampshire Florida South Carolina can't be thinking I love him more than ever.
Well look if you talk to -- advisors what they'll say is that.
Republicans even the most conservative Republicans understand that when you're governor restate -- beautiful word first about the needs of your constituents and less about national politics.
They think that voters that he does decide to make a national push -- 26 team they can separate the bipartisan style -- the -- of sandy vs where he stands and other hot button national issues.
Problem is the Republican Party voters primary voters in particular.
Are much more looking for the old Christina confrontation.
-- -- -- And -- haven't seen a lot of that as much of that lately and the more the bigger photo -- we have seen have been the ones with them -- the president has -- for the football the president on the Jersey Shore.
Did you matters and style matters a lot as much substance to a lot of conservative primary voters.
And I think he's going to be a credit he -- for president is a credible candidate but.
She's definitely not help his chances especially when you're looking at a field of a bomb throwers like Rand Paul.
Scott Walker certainly earned his stripes and a -- the as the battle he runs.
Even rubio who's there is -- you know it's it's going to be tough.
Since he missed that there's there's been a ton of walker buzz lately and I mean a ton of walker by us.
He had a successful outing and I always from a neighboring state.
Republicans historically have preferred governors as their candidates he's there can he can -- when I.
Think she's the sleeper of the 2016 presidential candidates for watching you build all the all the good reasons why -- in the fact is he matches the necessary companies that he was a confrontational.
Governor when he challenged the labor unions -- when he challenged the -- the public sector workers and really was able to pass a budget and get it done despite all the national outcry.
From from liberal groups.
And yet he still is a guy who was able to win election in a Blue States -- -- the exact executive modified and you've got the ability to take on some of them have that interest groups on the line.
Are they viewers will remember well me getting the finger and scream that in Madison -- -- they're gonna cover of the recall election and it was great fun.
And that before we'd like to go in Virginia you have.
Neither party is particularly.
Excited about their standard bearer.
You have former DNC boss and -- usual political trajectory that.
Terry McAuliffe on the democratic side he's got plenty of baggage.
-- -- -- -- is a social conservative of the first waters who in in a purple state like Virginia.
With a lot of moderate voters in the northern part of the state.
His style hardline stances on social issues and make it tough yeah.
I mean Virginia governor's races are kind of -- in the forty yard lines of the football field right you can't be too liberal he can't be too conservative Republicans and Democrats alike have governed.
And sort of centrist not ideological fashion.
And originality is it.
Outside that home -- he's been trying to.
Downplay the rough edges on -- social and it is an abortion and gay marriage of some of the more.
Hot rhetoric he's he's offered over the years but it's going to be a real challenge just given how much Virginia demographically.
In the last decade.
The -- the very flawed candidate himself so anything he does much.
-- -- -- so much as liberalism as it is the fact that he was the partisan fund raiser on a bumper or.
As for much much of his career in the fact -- -- have a huge degree of accomplishments -- -- -- from from his background.
You really do have this race -- the bottom where were both candidates are.
Deeply deeply flawed and Virginia that he's to have any straw aren't -- other candidates these these.
And managers the Mark Warner is the Bob McDonnell's Chuck -- back in the.
Not a moderate moderate Democrats not Republicans basically -- to get -- bandwidth.
A -- I live in the Virginia suburbs and I heard in my neighborhood the other -- the only thing that this person knew.
Was that they would they would be more poorly governed by this time next year so I think that that maybe -- sentiment if there's low turnout.
Could you Nellie will do better in getting his folks to the polls right in off year elections usually are short term.
There you go if if there's a double Republican plan and you'll know that there are strong signs for the party to do pretty well and fourteen.
Just -- power will do well in point fourteen -- -- regardless thank you for him.
Experts okay Internet.
Let's take a quick break to collect ourselves because -- we come back we're gonna talk about other shoes dropping.
As it relates to the Internal Revenue Service and its targeting of conservative groups -- do that when we come back.
-- stick around.
I want to -- I want to forward would be -- -- -- -- -- -- -- You know -- the most but not at all I mean I don't get that out of me.
Chile from skyline chili and Cincinnati Ohio.
And a four way by the way.
-- sweet Cincinnati's out -- served over noodles.
Beans and onions that's what a four way ought to be if you're doing it right near at skyline chili.
This is power -- so president -- they're bringing Chile back for his staff.
But the investigators for the house Ways and Means Committee.
As well as.
The house government oversight committee -- to be bringing that more than -- Wednesday -- complete their visits to Cincinnati over the next couple of weeks they hope to be bringing back damning testimony that will point the finger of blame higher inside the IRS chain of command.
That has previously been pointed before so what about that.
Why don't we figure it out.
And why don't we bring in.
Experts in the figuring out of things Richard Fowler he is the host appropriately enough of the -- show on we -- radio which if you lived in DC.
You listen to and WP WC 1488.
And and and taunting us from a low humidity -- pleasant climate in Denver Colorado.
Is your friend and mine Sarah Lindsay she is a Republican strategist she's worked among other people for Mitt Romney she is probable -- -- and plenty.
And -- welcome.
Think grant how are you this it.
This is not Canada I saw your tweet earlier that some Canadian power play I don't know anything about that caught after they probably haven't really tasty.
Alerts and they pronounce long vowels but that is not me I know -- accountable for their commentary on prime minister -- -- -- Okay sister let's start with you and here's a question so up to this point what we've heard about the IRS.
Are from people at some remove from what actually went on.
We've heard from the president the secretary treasury.
That -- two I mean I guess now to immediate past directors of the agency and the woman.
What we heard a little bit from the woman who was in charge of the division but we haven't heard any of the on the -- -- the folks who got the blame house Republicans think that they're gonna get some interest in testimony from them how likely is that.
You know Chris I don't know the president the other -- at the Naval Academy.
Set along the lines of that -- the actions of the few spoke about the integrity of the entire institution.
It would be.
It would behoove them to.
Come forward and be honest about what went on with the IRS but honestly the buck stops -- the president.
He was reelected and said that this new administer -- the new.
What next for -- are all going to be about transparency and we haven't seen that so I I think he needs to take a day.
And appoint special prosecutor -- 6% the pop those polled are saying they want this.
It's the number one issue and hop on top of -- and then the AP scandal.
This seems to be doubtless.
Do the president's not gonna appoint a special -- time to have done that would have been if if you're gonna do that you do that at the beginning you don't wait.
Three weeks and say you know that you mention that Republicans I think I will do that what he's what he's saying is.
We can remedy these problems inside of our government do attorney general's office can find -- around my question for you it's.
If you're one of these folks in the Cincinnati office.
If you -- one of these people you're just doing your job.
That's got to be your definition of this you were just doing your job you had pressure from Washington.
You had senators and -- the president himself saying he's 501 C groups.
Are up to no good this is nefarious or meddling in the political process so you go out and you say well let's -- them let's go get -- so you're just doing your job.
And now you've been scapegoated by everybody everybody from.
Former and current and presidents and Treasury Secretary and everybody said.
You guys screwed up wouldn't you be a little peeved if you were -- Yeah cricket look Chris I don't think it goes that far I think bill would first I think the Republicans are overplaying their hand on this -- -- -- -- and number and got the because if you look at the president's most recent approval ratings approval ratings are still in the fifties.
So I think that I think Democrats around other that morning and I allies of the president are rallying -- -- there before and so.
-- -- will get to you innocent referred to the question.
If you work and Europe angles and your lifelong suitor -- on civil servant you're in the union you're there you've worked -- -- benefactor high performing human being because you've been tasked with this important work.
And now you're getting thrown under the bus -- looks bad.
But I don't know that we're talking about two rogue individuals -- about four people did them before that have been identified if you're one of those four and now you've got paralyzed his henchmen flying down to Cincinnati and the flying into Covington and Burlington and they're saying.
Did this and we're gonna drag you before the house aren't you don't you feel abandoned them to feel betrayed.
Because if I was the one who went against them about my job description was in Iceland a particular groups that shouldn't have done that the president both -- have the air everywhere -- can I would I would not want to give I would not want to get as his people any extra -- coupons.
-- -- -- -- I totally agree and -- so the head of the IRS does the White House a 157 times more in -- secretary of state secretary treasury combined.
I would be furious if I were one of these workers in Cincinnati.
Again accountability at the top end.
This comes down to accountability the president had the IRS an ally the Department of Justice as well.
I just think I would be -- Chris.
DW well block.
-- balk but.
-- will -- tell me how it's pronounced now pronounce it correctly.
He wisely follows me on Twitter -- is is far far far thinking.
And won't walk says.
There would have to be at least 75 to a hundred people accountable.
Inside the structure they knew it was wrong and they still followed orders.
The but -- back to this point.
They didn't know it was wrong they didn't.
Think it was -- they saw a problem they saw a threat to democracy they saw a threat to this they saw the Coke Brothers.
Buying elections they saw danger they sought Astroturf they -- foreign money pouring in there was high alert these people.
Didn't the -- well we don't know but wouldn't it be possible at least for these people to think that they were doing their job that they were trying to protect the constitution and.
Any radical courses and is the same way as those individuals who audited in the -- you know for thought they were doing your job.
-- and so don't do that.
As I -- I I hear that and I think you're right on that point but I think with what we're what we're doing here is making a mountain out of a mole hill.
There's no connection to the White House has never been a connection to the white now White House and I think.
I don't -- -- and other members -- trying to make this connection and try to make this -- of scandal but just not resonating well with the American people Sarah I'll let you take that.
We don't know that there's no connection to the White House again the IRS chief was there a 157.
This has got to be looked at and it -- once -- -- I mean it's immoral if not legal to look.
Target and specific group of people.
The thing it's ironic president sitting here in Denver where the 501 C fours were -- -- you know back in the early two thousand's you can look at it for days.
Seriously investigating the democratic by the once he bowlers that's what I want it now yeah.
We were in 2004 when they ought to be a publicity.
That's sure they -- -- -- the NAACP beat then number.
Audit all groups all these groups were asked for additional questions as to do fortunately there were a -- they are not only are -- That this was -- more this was not this was -- cool you're competitors but look talking about art but it was a grassy it was super request what.
But he added it was are they doing -- -- are there primarily engaging in election activities are not.
-- political activities on the Tea Party the Tea Party bucks more Tennessee is not in the 51% and Packers picked him.
Well that and why we don't have a -- conversation about how we report.
You can't -- shouldn't get a bigger conversation about a lot of things but that the truth is in this situation.
You're making my point these people thought they were doing what was right and they get and they're getting cash before they thought they were ready -- -- President Obama and the secretary of the treasury and all these people there's I mean.
Haven't they gotten thrown under the bus for doing what they thought was right I think the president handle this amazingly he fired the guy who ran higher -- at the time.
Right -- what we're seeing now is this witch hunt happening by sterilize.
And Republicans on the House of Representatives looking forward I don't know what they're looking for god knows what they're looking for.
On the same as the looking for more from being -- but there's nobody is looking for -- either.
This is just a crusade against the president's agenda Sarah leaving aside the question of -- who's to blame etc.
would you agree with the assessment that the president has handled this amazingly.
He is not handled this amazingly -- need to get -- for -- I mean the timeline even took shows you that they haven't handled this amazingly they've -- back in the fourth what did they know what did they know.
It's it's been a disaster and all three scandals.
Period end of story.
Period and it starts with a two different ends of the stories -- accurate and they ended with the same punctuation but different ending.
-- good luck getting on Canadian Internet television but for now we're very we're very happy to have you here in the states enjoy -- -- -- I -- that.
That's okay -- loves you and Richard candidate in America should -- I'm like well I'm not sure why not and Richard Greg White House.
That's a -- back in -- -- yeah it was a pretty big deal that's Friday I thought I would note I white -- -- -- -- it's a widely Buford of white shoe law firms this is a white -- radio host Richard -- thank you.
We're gonna take a quick break but when we come back one of your very favorites somebody who knows a thing -- -- -- we -- That's Mike Emanuel heat will be here -- we will sort things that as it relates to enter into with him -- stick around.
It's on precedent.
The degree of willingness of this administration to target to target a reporter for this network as an unindicted co conspirator.
And I mean -- that he is without precedent.
And unfortunately I think it's part and parcel of a pattern from this administration.
Of not respecting the bill of rights.
Indictments came from and -- Senator US senator from the great state of Texas and he was on America live with Megyn Kelly.
This -- -- welcome back now.
The heat on attorney general holder is not yet abated.
He had some meetings yesterday with those Washington bureau chiefs who were willing.
That win over and they talk about what they might do in the future.
But this doesn't show any signs of letting up as congressional investigators.
Get ready to unleash hell -- the Justice Department.
Tracking -- is Mike Emanuel who joins us here at -- Changed -- studio three instead of being over there with all your fancy friends in the Russell -- this -- -- the echo chamber echo chamber so what do you know.
Well you know I think this is at this stage of a Washington controversy where.
He has the -- of the president's confidence until he doesn't.
They had confidence right right I mean so I think there -- these meetings going on and they're hoping that at all.
You know -- some people down in the media that are you know hammering this issue every day.
Will it I don't know I mean I know our news organization didn't go because it was off the record at that point oh.
So at this point you know they're doing damage control and -- trying to change the subject or say we'll do better or or something of that nature.
-- -- still will not tell me how he pronounces his names but this Mike Emanuel is not related.
I don't believe to Rahm Emanuel Chicago different.
Told me one time that I was Ron's little brother in the night clarify for him is that Mr.
President that over the case.
I would have much better access there right way better access -- no relation sets yes no relation.
OK so the question Mike is.
This is also the point in Washington controversy.
When things slowdown you have new revelation.
You have that and sharp intake of breath of this thing has happened then people rally to their flags Democrats rallied to go all the mostly.
In this case mostly rallied to the attorney general's -- they're doing so quietly they're not they're not coming you don't hear a lot of full throated support -- But they're hoping he'll do enough make goods to get there meanwhile Republican investigators are trying to figure it out enough to use against him.
What's the timeframe when are we gonna start to see some work product.
I -- very soon very quickly.
You know we've got multiple tracks going in terms of these congressional investigations the IRS can have more hearings next week.
Timing wise the Memorial Day holiday may have been a good.
You breather if you will floor.
The attorney general and perhaps the folks at the IRS because congress at a town they're not getting hammered every day to the frequency that they would be if they were here.
But they come back on Monday and so we expect that we will -- some more.
From lawmakers early next week on on all fronts related to these different controversies that are -- right now.
You know why Cincinnati chili is sweet and has that unusual.
-- tell me during the -- my piece this is speaks Greek restaurant tourists in Cincinnati to the American staple of Chile and added some exotic spices of the east.
To the bland and came up with what Texans hate.
But it's pretty tasty Cincinnati chili skyline and gold star I think -- better but it's very tasty stuff that so thanks to the Greeks for bringing -- five way to these shores and Rob Portman thanks you for buying the children.
And we thank you for making time for us today.
Happy Friday Internet did you have fun I did Canadian jokes and chilly jokes and Sarah -- -- jokes all aside thanks for making a little bit of time for us that really grateful that you check and and -- Jonathan Hunt is next and now.
We like to do everything we want to leave -- with the word from our French -- This stuff -- no farce here is you have this whole exercise is about.
Making the administration accountable.
But the way to be accountable to speak on the record.
So everybody has a look at what you say is he considered true.
And to make it off of the record of course -- entirely that purpose.
