The free press is in my view the most important guarantee liberty in this country certainly the framers viewed that way.
That's -- in the First Amendment it is there because it's often the press that holds the government accountable forces them to take responsibility.
And what's astonishing to me is how the supporters of this president.
Have -- served cast this aside.
-- they belittled the attack on the media you've even seen them say well as long as people like -- and were prosecuted.
It's really not an attack on the media.
That's that's that's really facial -- ridiculous.
And that's well known law professor Jonathan Turley with with his take on the scandal over the Justice Department is editorial ran under this headline.
In USA today the attorney general holder.
That the scandal involves of course spying on journalists -- wrote that column for USA today.
Calling on -- -- to get fired for his attacks on the news media Judy turley called Eric Holder a sin -- That's an eighteen century religious term apparently.
And I just can't get -- yeah this context it refers to someone who -- the president from his responsibilities is that what it's going on here.
Well I I think there isn't element to that and -- and not Ron -- you there at the AM National Journal point didn't explain here.
Of what off the record is as opposed to on background is supposed to on.
This record this meeting should have been on the record there is no excuse for it being anything else because the DCN.
Is an egregious one.
Vigorous nods of agreement I guess -- Ellen Ratner well first of all I wanna give it to colder air colder grand am the Obama administration for single handedly.
Uniting left and right journalist.
All right coming.
It's it's you -- -- Jonathan Turley who you just talked about.
Called it to -- it in -- go -- each child the greatest attack on free press in decades.
In USA today know is that what's going on we have a united front here.
We did and I think this is probably a pretty good gambit on the part of the DOJ to.
Sort of allowed depressive.
To be a part of this too to make them sort of somewhat culpable for what the DOJ was doing and allow them to bring them in and say we're -- just trying to work out this working relationship and now -- justice culpable as we are.
In a cover up essentially.
In targeting journalists cover up is that -- adding that no makes good point that -- holders try to do them the clinch on them and bring him in and so for example.
I'll and you made and Judy may detect outrage here when I see the Washington Post headlines page three of Friday's -- holder addresses media concerns in a story -- categories like somewhere between new elections in the Philippines or.
Blatantly don't Prince Harry I don't detect any outrage and I think this is a completely manageable story.
Are from from the White House point of view and when Chris Matthews was pretty job -- there's -- Chris Matthews and Chris Matthews said it was a quote her flop all unquote probably -- -- they're not feeling the pain at all on this.
I don't know I hear people pretty angry and I take it we called the Justice Department and asked them what radio people.
We're invited to these meetings they -- didn't return our calls and -- so far as I can tell no radio people one right.
No -- is and MSNBC.
Contributor Michael Eric Dyson.
-- -- Eric Holder the Moses of our time we've got a lot of sort of religious references.
Our thus far.
How does he get away with that -- he's talking about the right wing effort to smear yes attorney general.
He's a longer he is because he's the essential the equivalent of of handing down on the law's from on high and that.
Yeah it was a very young stream of thought stream of consciousness kind of effort to exonerate.
Eric Holder and -- him scrutiny in some sort of idea of a victim here.
And it was very ham handed and it's been relatively.
-- so Rick you've spent a lot of time at the podium explaining how government works there's a question as to whether or not.
Eric Holder committed perjury he said he wasn't in -- back on May fifteenth in.
Any attempt or or that he knew nothing about any attempt to prosecute anyone in the press.
For disclosure of material and then later comes out that.
He was the one who approved of this court order this this request to investigate James Rosen.
And even labeled him a fox -- I'm sorry labeled him a co conspirator.
How does -- get going with.
I'm not sure what people on these -- are drinking because it's so obvious that he lied.
If if more people in Washington who -- Actually got fired we would fix Washington those of us on the outside are looking at Washington in the East Coast and laughing.
Where are the journalists now would be a good time.
For some real journalists to stand up.
And separate themselves from the group think that's going on instead though we have Jack Shafer.
Who lives in media critic for Reuters who besides this week to attack and James Rosen and say you know he's a sloppy journalist who got caught.
That's not what we need with journalists right now we -- -- free press who are gonna stand up and call this what it is.
I'm -- mentioned one who who let the chips for the man that's Jordy -- at the at the hill who said look there does appear to be a discrepancy between what holder testified under -- to and what actually is truth.
And what the -- figure out for themselves what they think.
And then to say well we're gonna charge him as a -- -- -- forward co conspirator we're gonna tell the judge he's a co conspirator.
But we never intended to charging criminal.
Right we're just going to -- to the judge in order to get the search warrant that we want to -- -- records but we wouldn't think of prosecuting him.
How is it every journalist -- a country and don't forget that -- me.
And if I'm tied to -- everybody in multiple judges and -- -- well there it that was that was separate issue over whether or not the warrant ought to be made public.
But the seizing of the records.
And perhaps we still don't know whether or not Fox News was informed or not informed there's a dispute over whose records were compromised we have so many questions that journalists have stopped asking.
And this and we're right in the middle of the scandal.
You alluded earlier to that off the record meeting that Eric Holder held this week with representatives of some news organizations.
Many including Fox News decided not to attend -- forty -- again from the national journey journal.
Wrote a list of of bullet points really about that meeting and -- one of his more I thought interesting points -- The -- fundamental job is to shine light in the darkest corners of government if we stand for anything its transparency and accountability.
Meeting secretly with holder.
Borders on hypocrisy Ellen.
-- -- not gonna get any disagreement from me.
You know is interesting is reason magazine talked about that -- -- don't even think about having these meetings until he was sitting reading the Washington Post.
And act at at that is is kitchen table and finally it sunk in that may -- the media was.
That was the -- president was also traveled.
And therefore he asked the attorney general to examine his own department in his own conduct and come up with recommendations for fixing the problem and 45 days.
Excuse -- what's going on here.
