The -- answers in the house Ways and Means Committee will investigate the tax agencies targeting of conservative groups.
An -- -- no allegations that individual Americans.
Were targeted because their political views conflicted with the Obama administration.
Committee chairman Dave Camp Republican of Michigan says quote.
We now know that the IRS began targeting individuals based on their personal beliefs three years ago we still need to know -- begin this targeting.
And why and there are a slew of lawsuits by groups that were allegedly targeted.
One lawyer involved -- that instead -- Mitchell she's on the board of the national Republican lawyers association has involved us in these lawsuits.
And joins us this morning from Raleigh, North Carolina did -- good morning.
Good morning Eric do you think that the IRS this administration did target people who were rivals and -- -- opponents politically.
Because of that.
I absolutely do and I think we're going to get to the bottom of that as we.
Engage in discovery on behalf.
I represent truth about it which is an organization.
That file suit against -- a week ago.
This is an organization that has been waiting for more than three years for its taxes and status and one of the things I think we're going to find out as we're going to find out.
Did in fact the IRS.
At that they I know they ask about donors and in some cases I refuse to may -- some clients to provide that information that you see every tax exempt organization even those are waiting exemption.
Have to provide to the IRS on -- confidential.
They are donors of 5000 dollars or more so the IRS has a target list.
That is required to be submitted to the iris that is not supposed to be used for anything other than I just information to the iris is -- is a target those -- So what you're saying it it's your view.
That the administration illegally target Americans because of of their political views and they tried to do this to hurt a -- -- political opponents leading up.
To an election here.
Well look I think that that's a lot of assumptions what we know for a fact.
Is that the IRS through its withholding of exempt status for all these conservative groups I represent a number of them.
That with the kinds of questions at the IRS ask of these groups can make you pay when -- applications are pending.
They iris was asking for things that they should never have asked.
They should never asked for donors that should never have asked if he had candidate forums they should never Baptist kind of questions and they have all this had the effect of chilling.
-- free speech and association of these conserve workers and we know for a fact that it was happening all linked to conservative organization.
It didn't happen any liberal groups this and a like 300 or so we know had been the numbers dealing with the conservative groups what about.
Or other groups.
Well -- want dot org interestingly enough it has rolling more to over the last ten years into a federal pac.
So it really doesn't deal with the IRS.
As much as it did when it first began but look -- live on dot org was started in the late nineties to fight against impeachment of Bill Clinton.
It it applied for and receive this 501 C -- tax status instantly just like that.
All all of the organizations used to be able to expect to get their applications reviewed and approved or denied within a very short period of time that all stopped.
And the spring of 2010 and it has not.
Then corrected that's the other thing -- The -- wants to make it sound as though they found this out a year ago and -- put a stop to it.
That's not -- -- there are hundreds of conservative groups who are still waiting.
For their tax exempt status and -- pet nothing has changed inside the IRS as near as I can -- What about those who say you know they what they did was just appropriate even though I apologized just classified groups based on these.
Buzz words it was a bureaucratic way to label that.
Let your dog again that is total -- -- the IRS has done -- -- -- totally abandoned the rule of law.
There is -- process that has been in place for many years.
That as an organization that seeks exempt status fills out an application there or something like seventy questions there's a certain set of information your -- to provide.
When the Irish started this effort.
It completely departed from the approved rule of law.
The approve process and has created something that really has gone from being an object -- standard that would apply to everybody regardless of their political beliefs.
To now one that is -- objective.
We don't even know what the legal standard is that -- are applying and their client only to certain.
Groups and individuals based on -- political philosophy that that doesn't sound like the United States that you have like the former Soviet Union.
