I'm Alan -- welcome our show -- -- welcome monetary Holbrook author of the book trader.
Terry -- -- guarded detainees from 20032004.
And no one of his duties was to escort prisoners to interrogations and return them to their cells and a bunch of midnight conversations.
With some of the detainees and as a result diverted to Islam.
Terry thank you coming on tonight appreciated very much.
Absolutely I would welcome the the hold music they're -- like the clash.
We try to entertain people even when their own -- here on the show.
What did you tell you what you call your book trader.
Well it was actually kind of pumped into it -- to comment from the 2009 article in Newsweek.
I think that -- make -- fourteen to eighteen hours of the article being published about me 2009.
There -- literally 3000 comments calling me Riche true.
Some other form of the word that they decided that people wanted to use it towards being okay I I would -- embrace and perhaps take it from the mid Atlantic title for a book.
It is quite -- good to.
You know and of course it when Ann Coulter writes in the word liberal precedes it but anyway.
I was very intrigued by -- when you first decided to join the military and they told you know.
You actually went Lucent I really wanna go kill people -- get paid for it and that was your initial thought after 9/11 right.
Now I don't know I don't know I went to the recruiters from 2002.
And then -- after what I wanted to do I jokingly told them I want people get paid four dollars and it was a joke.
Right where it really didn't take it that way.
No it didn't take it seriously to begin when I I was covered in tattoos and I hear are stretched out what are a lot of pure and others around the rebellious when it.
Tell me the -- -- conversion for you what led to you converting to Islam here you are guard you're guarding a bunch of Muslim detainees.
I guess Muslims are regarded by as the enemy sadly I think it probably probably globally as -- any enemy.
By the -- to Guantanamo right I'm guess is a lot of bigotry.
Toward the Muslim -- But that would BA have accurate portrayal I had a lot of spare me how the cards electorate we're actually read the column all the live there and any of armor they have no objection to it after having -- -- but the other half.
Prefer mile those are the main point was the -- stimulus sort of -- it was but I have seen individuals who could.
-- you motivated.
And he continuing and moving forward and prosperous what their life.
Their -- alone.
And I I -- practicing and they are watching Christian book on the Churchill.
But the Christmas math -- things like that but I've never seen anything like link there and be sure to pay the detainees and Juan -- -- they have nothing no better pay and that was enough to keep them getting up and filing saying.
You know about that means those a big indicator.
You made a similar -- or for example you thought you were more of a prison and they work that they were -- -- in some way freer in the new.
Because of their attitude and good vs what you had to do for a living when you were guard.
Absolutely -- should be a little go to work each day hung over miserable it is going on marketed everything about -- That the Manning cages for 23 and half are there wake up and -- -- take a rocket type as a -- -- -- -- -- the scenario.
So you saw them smiling and probably stretchers and why are they smiling -- the prisoners.
Most definitely is critical wilderness.
Actually -- about sex while the conversations and questions.
So what a deadly -- tell me about some of those conversations.
In future explored.
Why these people seem to be good hearted or at least good natured.
And -- -- the guard were not as happy as they -- war.
The potential conversation quickly initially had -- like you pray iPad today are you training that we're ready trainer -- east speak English release speak for me.
While -- treat poor coaching drink -- smoke.
I know our initial question that -- look I didn't know anything about Islam but those are the questions but I than many times the detainees would simply answer my questions and go about their business.
I don't think there's actually one detainee who actively attempted just don't give me dollar two to embrace Islam we knew that it really concern them.
Right to they weren't evangelical they were just simply answering your questions never did they think probably that the prison guard.
What was your reaction of the other guards to Yorker mr.
Will -- -- commiserate -- -- the right word but communing with them talking to them and eventually.
Becoming of their faith.
You know I think the other most of -- comment that I received from -- color -- loans.
You're wearing green out wearing green -- -- I believe don't give -- hardware and what you believe that easily.
OK for that but if not every common was enlighten.
-- -- -- ever couple chapters about some of the other problem some of the other actions and activities including.
What -- you threatened -- physically in danger because of what you're doing.
I would be a liar actually -- -- can you give us without using bad language but some of threats -- may have come your way and as a result of your conversion -- To them to that of your -- horse.
Yeah we we don't like that -- -- and -- Oceanic or how.
-- who the Taliban out of yeah.
And then if you don't kick right don't -- -- on and start thinking like an American -- just popular shoot -- on the cage.
Really so and that everybody was as likely to say as we both -- grin Wear green and -- and don't bring in Italy office.
I think how the -- -- Serbs would spread the crime or there I know initially that.
What -- you're your your career path of of conversion had a few bumps along the way because.
After you left gitmo.
You kind of descended back to some of the behavior.
That you had been doing prior to becoming going into the military correct.
Actually -- that was.
That was captured in my mind I shot after -- embraced Islam.
You will work yeah it's a troubled -- stadium on and then and and with that I have that divorce my father passing away operational military in a number of other things like what drew him.
-- you can't.
You can't -- Guantanamo.
You can't hide it you can't.
So there's nothing you can do to make what you see that -- and -- this feeling and thought go away.
I'd like to -- gonna take a break and when we come back wanna ask you about some of the things you observed to Guantanamo.
How these prisoners are being treated.
How what some of them one scary terrorist apparently was twelve.
And how it is that they don't have access to attorney or any any pathway toward toward freedom we're gonna come right back.
-- -- that Terry Holbrooke C has written a book called trader.
Former gitmo guard who's now converted to Islam based on what he observed from those of that faith when he was guarding them.
Upscale structures in the military was -- -- gitmo.
He converted to Islam as a result of some of the conversations he had we've won that one person particular right -- Terry.
There are few but we can always should be many Richie.
And you have -- Islam may be used Kerry or do you juror Islamic name general and.
Well I hysteria all generations find the general idea there is -- -- you have some type but a name that is.
And -- -- ethical that the purpose content changes or there's nothing wrong with Harry -- and no reason to change it.
Now you're the only you're like it tattooed guy you'd have.
You're drink you're you did indiscriminate sex and when you.
You had those issues going -- for yourself and now your life is totally turned around correct.
I would -- a little perfect punctuation sir.
Tell me about what happened -- -- in terms of how the inmates were treated and I have no idea why.
Number one we -- and move those -- close gitmo.
And why we don't give a right constitutional right to.
Two judicial process to the people who -- not having a right to even an attorney.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- Well well I guess whatever level and I don't question -- and -- how -- treated what did you observe and to did you see people being tortured.
-- yeah and torched exodus to Guantanamo abuse takes its Guantanamo.
If you don't just fine line between fox CNN -- there's cereal how define the -- We'll tell me when you say torture.
What specifically did you observe.
Contemplate that for a long time this -- don't overdo it and there was torture -- simply abuse.
And it took awhile to come to conclusion that most tortured.
Putting a -- -- a room for fourteen hours on and having him shackled to the ground and stress position uncle Marshall school and -- -- -- and then -- -- need to dedicate themselves.
At which point guard comes an immaculate from congress and the cold water front seat -- down -- forty leaves more room for another six hours.
I think about -- -- I would too.
I think putting stroke blood on -- space and being told to turn the water -- has helped her.
Or five days side -- he can't wash all.
I think that torture.
Did you see water boarding -- Yeah I would imagine that waterboarding were occurring in Guantanamo that'll be happening I have particular gentleman -- -- part of the general population.
-- -- I don't think there's really anything held back of those.
Because she won't comment and the other or that they he's co conspirator wish.
I would imagine what happened -- probably our worst but what happens the general public union -- No matter to water board somebody and then release them back to the general public would -- very unwise -- You reliant on your quick quickly.
One terrorist was twelve years old.
Two where sort -- -- And another was thirteen.
And what they possibly had to contribute -- war and terrorist beyond I have no idea.
And one was in the seventies and dying of tuberculosis.
Do you have any understanding as to why they were there.
Well and have -- there are -- It's kind of hard to come up but I can go under the military computers that you hadn't try to look up an interracial -- -- -- -- -- would really talk much -- -- -- language used Oakmont country strong.
But I think almanac and -- -- cage prisoners are common.
Type and everything I ever wanted to know that a detainee.
Connection conviction -- prisoners -- are more information at that point in time.
But in the military can -- that I had a little -- out of work.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Nonetheless what -- but I started.
Putting it all it didn't respect.
In fairness that's that's what kind of -- to coming together it is in Honolulu the whole purpose of this just to have peace and comfort the American public.
I've always -- that.
I'm not covered by -- -- by having by -- people without the right to -- by the way the constitution as I've said many times applies to persons not just as citizens.
You know I have a 100% agree with Cuba.
I -- the sake of our audience -- divvied up many of whom loved the idea that would be torturing Muslims are like you know you have you've heard some of the reactions that people haven't.
This this so called religious war.
You know we should know and I thought -- to be different under Barack Obama that this president would not do that and would have ended these kind of abuses.
I didn't think he'd be different than any other president.
When we lost control of our country and politicians certain caring more about monetary gain.
That's -- -- going at Q.
Is is there any hope for the people in gitmo they can't stay there forever.
I think I -- right -- a hunger strike.
Two thirds of the population that is currently on -- strike in the ideas but if they die in the hands of the Americans could.
And embarrass America on a global scale and I think Guantanamo -- -- good enough job of that at the -- is -- Certainly you know hundred people just happen to drop like -- -- -- self induced starvation.
I think we were definitely clear and loud picture -- -- change them and everybody.
Else on those hot Josh.
Imagine a desperate to have to be to see.
Figure you've got nothing else to lose but to stop beating because I'm enough of a live far anyway that's.
Connect twelve years being Guantanamo that I would certainly and a I'm Dave England on the -- -- -- Freddy -- you're American.
You're under American captivity and -- -- should apply -- you.
Due process civil right he -- should apply.
We -- country that -- -- our law -- -- country -- out of our legal system.
Trust not to -- that in the individual that we trust and put in Guantanamo Bay.
And that helped write that urged antithetical to -- the basis of the -- You said that the camp pimples on every human -- US -- says it supports.
-- I don't know what are.
You were discharged at least according to press reports on -- -- But with so called quote generalized personality disorder what was that about.
An extra twenty policy go to Iraq.
The conversation you know this whether or not -- wanted to take emotional post -- Iraq.
Whether or not you hesitate to pull a trigger things like.
I was given a general -- personality disorder and operate honorable mister.
I don't understand what was that about going to a rock port -- -- have to do it.
Well that was an -- employment and -- the military -- not want me going there.
It was a yes there's gonna sponsor.
So we have him -- conserving our armed forces and the screen time and to be honest -- I encourage.
All of them on it and actually in other encourage people join the military I loved -- absolutely love that I think every American children military.
-- let you know I don't I'm not control and insurance but it people who are happy about that.
That's an interesting point of view is -- -- -- I guess I'm surprised given all you've been through.
And what they said about you and as you characterize some of the guards that you would say.
How much you love the military would would advise of the people to go into it because.
You not obviously you're you're speaking about and -- always in the most glowing terms.
Well for me fit to judge the entire military as a whole based on actions are few individuals would be ridiculous you know Irish say that the all the soldiers were serving in -- war are awful and should be locked up because Steven -- green reached a fourteen year old Iraqi girl and her family.
Know that that wouldn't be fair.
Been saying all Christians are evil because the last for a church -- a lot of asinine things the same as saying all Muslims are bad because.
Osama bin -- -- horrible guy.
How is your life -- now is a Muslim than it was before.
-- well I -- some problems.
I'm -- -- rather -- purpose and direction.
I am consciously seeking to strive to make rational -- -- -- protection of intellectual and try to eliminate.
Try to work politicians try to work on the you know -- courtesy -- attitude and I've gotten everything that I honestly think other that that could have been a deficit about.
How do you handle the bigotry when there are those who will say it's a Muslims killed us as a Muslim -- -- -- get us.
They wanna Hampshire -- law they attacked us on 9/11 they're trying to take us -- how do you respond to all that stuff.
I usually don't.
District that's the people are saying things like that there were talking to -- -- just it's better slip them under the let me just need to be educated.
Yeah now there are and I am pretty good at reading those on -- and one.
You know could be educated -- talk about two hours growers I don't call me -- condominiums and Tommy are gonna kill me or whatever.
At the end of the conversation they usually think a little bit differently so what's -- what's next for you.
Well currently working promote illegal fund of America -- -- church.
Great job I enjoy it I can't complain about our work -- open at this book -- well I'd like open really reassure general population speech.
We're -- to look at it the other where can people get your book traders the name of the book and it's a digital undated digital copy -- -- beginner on Amazon.
You can get on Amazon but you can't serve as simply hear that Chichi M though -- -- com.
All the way that it should be.
