Stories and dramatic new testimony in the scandals -- not IRS -- -- with us on this Tuesday I'm generally and I'm John Scott welcome to the second hour of happening now live look now at Capitol Hill.
Lawmakers there are hearing directly from the conservative groups who were targeted by the tax agency.
In order to raise money I filed an application with the IRS in January of 2011.
Seeking to obtain 501 C three status.
As an educational organization.
As of today I've been waiting for 29 months without status.
In the intro my -- to 30000 dollar launch -- it.
From a reputable nonprofit whose executive director advice me.
But he had never seen such treatment of -- 501 C three applicant in his 25 years of making grants.
I also lost and continue to lose multiple thousands of my own money.
We are patriotic Americans.
We peacefully assemble we petition our government.
We exercise the rights of free speech.
And we don't understand why the government tried to stop us I'm not -- my lords -- -- I -- born free American woman.
Wife mother in citizen.
I'm telling my government -- you've forgotten your place.
Well the IRS already had its say when this man the agency's acting commissioner got a grilling yesterday.
He talked about his priority is going forward.
Do you feel like the IRS has betrayed the trust of the American people.
Thank you mr.
chairman I think that's why I'm thinking about this in terms of my primary mission.
Is to restore that trust and hopeful that by the end of this this hearing today for the various questions that that you ask that can lay out.
Our our approach.
But I think it has to start with the recognition that the trust has been violated and it has to start with the recognition that we have to get all the facts out.
All this comes as new details emerge about the IRS and it's fifty million dollar spending spree with.
Money going to fun stuff like this.
-- -- -- even yes the now infamous line dancing video with IRS workers showing off their moves.
This recording cost about 16100 bucks to make your hard earned tax dollars paid for it.
But that's not all -- -- shelled out for -- CBS news reporting the IRS employee conference in Anaheim California.
Cost four million dollars with some managers staying in suites at 15100.
Dollars a night.
The agency also brought in a happiness expert for more than 111000.
Dollars to -- some workshops.
And it paid another speaker 171000.
Dollars for a presentation on leadership's -- through art.
For a look at the political impact of all of this let's bring in Joseph Trippi former Howard Dean campaign manager also a Fox News contributor.
Have you had your happiness coach today Joseph.
No but I could use -- At that.
So what about the political impact you know we just heard congressman Jim McDermott there from Washington State in the hearing.
Suggesting that there have been abuses.
You know directed at Democrats in the past as well is there going to be -- trouble for the administration because of all this.
I I I look I think it's clear that they've -- there will be and look.
There may well have been.
Some progressive groups -- -- they were hit like this -- But that's no defense of any event you have to be appalled by what.
These individuals were telling when they were telling their stories about the IRS.
Them and it.
Yeah I mean I just think it's.
That's an -- reasonable defense.
It's clear I thought that acting director.
Made the better case yesterday that.
You have to admit that there is abuse and a failure -- that and we have to get all the facts out and I think that's what these hearings are gonna do.
And they are gonna I think there are gonna be some implications I mean with -- all of these things combined particularly the -- you know the situation with Eric Holder the attorney general.
The increasing calls on both the left in the right for him to -- to resign whether he does or not all these things are gonna impact.
Moving forward politically both parties.
And I think -- 2014.
You know the obviously I think the Republican Party will make the case.
Using these scandals against the administration and Democrats and Democrats will be.
Saying look you there overreach seeing.
They're not doing that the country's business instead they're just trying to get the White House in that debate is gonna affect and impact the 2014 election how.
Yet it's not clear but right now I'd rather.
I think the administration suggests get all the -- the facts out and and -- try to put this.
As many of these things behind them as they can't by addressing them not fight.
Pushing him under.
The rug with a history here -- obviously -- the Tea Party a rose after President Obama was elected and and -- seem to be.
Too much of what he was trying to accomplish in his first -- so the Tea Party.
Sprang up if then.
The Tea Party is singled out or Tea Party groups are singled out.
For special scrutiny from the IRS.
At a time when that administration.
Was in power it just it just raises all kinds of questions.
About who is really doing the the scrutiny here and who's ordering it.
But now and I think that's what the investigation in -- Olympic Committee.
Hearings that are you know gonna try to get to right -- -- right I mean it.
It where -- where does does this stop and that's going to be important if it goes.
Much higher than most learner I and I don't know the answer to any of that the one thing I'm -- I'm convinced.
From both the democratic side on that committee -- congressman Levin and it and in the Republicans they're gonna get to the bottom of or to the top where this goes.
And that that that's gonna be -- we need to because this -- to get fixed it can't happen again.
But you're political advisor I mean if if you were there.
-- -- get on the horn with President Obama this afternoon and and and start talking him up to him about what he should do as a result of all this.
I mean these ordinary Americans getting up there in front congress.
And telling some heart rending stories frankly and pleading their cases very well what would you tell the president about the in the political impact here.
Well I want thinks I think that that congress eleven did today was apologize.
To to the to the groups that reviews I mean did they did.
That they deserve an apology there you know that's something -- something.
Really wrong happened here.
And I think you need to state that.
Apologize for it and and and then.
Get to the bottom of it and change it in reform and one of the things I think that this may end up.
Having some impact he was tax reform because.
All of the complicated stuff that these big big groups have to do and I don't mean just these groups that I mean every all Americans have to do.
-- to get through the tax morass of the IRS.
May be a real reform of the RS in the tax code really is it -- -- beyond just this issue.
Congressman Dave Camp ahead of this committee supposedly wants to make that.
One of the big priorities of the committee going forward tax reform.
The question is whether you know the rest Washington will buy into that.
Joseph Trippi always good to talk you thank you thanks John.
