I'm what I'm airborne welcome to cash in -- are -- crude this week Wayne Rogers Jonathan Hoenig and Tracy Byrnes also joining us president Obama's former top economic advisor.
And now of professor.
At the University of Chicago Booth school of business mr.
Austan Goolsbee welcome everybody for the IRS hits keep coming now we're finding out the agency dropping more than four million of your tax dollars.
On a conference at a swanky hotel back in 2010.
The same job it would be Star Trek -- and the infamous line dancing and it all went down about the same time the iris began targeting conservative groups Jonathan.
Get this they were learning how to be open and transparent with taxpayers -- Air act Erica and they're going after the Tea Party groups that want to cut down -- government spending the same time this spending.
Four million dollars on a conference which is really just a lot vacation -- 3000 dollars for a presidential suite.
Eric I'm a pretty successful guy I've never spent 3000 dollars on a hotel room.
But you know it's part of this trend where that was the GSA with there lavish spending number that the clown -- a mind -- couple years ago with a V8 I mean.
They treat the money like it's not ours because it's not it's not just in explainable it's an excuse -- -- and Wayne but it didn't.
-- yes it's inexcusable spend taxpayer money frivolously.
Arrogantly like that but also at the exact same time.
They were targeting conservative groups what does that tell you.
Well it does a lot of things first -- I think -- -- the most fundamental problem is that the government is totally out of control it's gotten so big that nobody knows what's going -- -- and I'm not sure that they even -- themselves.
The -- the increase in grand -- -- -- within the bureaucracy is what.
It's it's added one but one element of the government has no idea of what what -- what what other element of the government is doing these agencies are out of control.
They feel entitled.
They think that day.
Our our art of the people working for them as opposed to resemble working for us that's the -- -- and also what were aware of the checks and balances on stuff like this is conference is fifty million dollars by the way between 2010.
And 2012 that that there must be some oversight.
Yeah you know I I think there is I thought I thought -- point is right you know he's -- got to have some oversight discipline on this or else this kind of thing tends to happen you know it's a similar.
In a big company of and people started abusing their expense reports or or that kind of thing.
I think the budget of the fifty or forty million dollars was for 200 -- -- a different conferences.
To the extent the IRS has covered -- where the people are coming in actually.
Helping them do their jobs.
-- -- -- Osama let me let me just -- I made the cut -- like this but it was it was fifteen million bucks in their 220 these conferences but what did he do -- -- -- doing -- to the Star -- videos.
Meanwhile this -- the one entity.
This is the one group that can bring every American to their knees when you get a phone call from these people I think they have a little bit more responsibility -- the taxpayer.
-- look -- 100% agree with that what I'm saying is this conference in Anaheim -- that.
3000 dollar presidential -- to me that is the more egregious example.
Then the fact that they ran.
200 and -- -- different conference.
Right and I think to add to your point the more egregious point is that the money was set aside to hire more enforcement officials.
To hire more people and instead they kind of meet a little entry -- canning and she moved the money over into their party budget.
And had a big old conference instead so it hurts is double as taxpayers.
What is should be wasting our money and money was to be set aside for just for something to help us we lose complete.
John and if you don't it doesn't have.
You have to be this way Eric but it doesn't have to because we did iris has -- a twelve billion dollar budget excellent now.
42 dollars for every man woman and child in America it's like six months -- of -- that you pay for every year just for the budget back IRS.
I -- this studies that show a flat tax could actually reduce that expense by about 95%.
But of course the governor would never go forward because it doesn't punish the rich to help the -- That's something worth exploring rather than a more oversight of government spending the party out of control our -- -- Wayne this I want I want -- -- -- and it also so what what the -- came to congress.
A raise the right hand and swore under -- The -- -- there were asked what they were doing Doug Schulman who had been to the White House or had at least been cleared by the White House a 157.
Times in the last couple years.
When asked what he was doing there he said something to -- back to -- you know I went to the Easter egg roll it.
That is just contemptuous.
The American people is enough.
Well I think -- it's arrogance -- beyond itself that's what I said before that these things are out of control in the sense that they they are itself in dealing with that with a power.
And nobody is watching the store they think that there independent.
It's the fact that they they hit it -- this exists throughout the government each one of these agencies has found themselves to be.
She was so to speak.
Powerful within itself and -- -- nobody is why in nobody's controlling them and it's getting worse and worse so big government is that it is a theory.
That is pervasive throughout what we're doing and it has to stop.
Now -- don't let the cricket Aaron -- any event -- out there.
Do have -- lavish conferences like this but.
But for companies that have the money to spend all the power to -- The iris doesn't have this kind of budget and -- -- -- -- look they need all these conferences -- learn without going not well.
But don't be -- I -- -- -- striving in taxpayer money to complete -- -- to beat -- before you move on it in the show yeah tell me.
Who decided to to target conservative groups now I did it if we'd -- that it came from Cincinnati but since there's going to -- DC.
Some lawyer in DC didn't come up of this on his own dating you're in the White House you're in -- it honestly look I don't think -- That this is.
What what I think happened.
Is we we congress we the congress set up this weird situation in which.
Political groups to spend on elections with secret donor lists -- center and we tell the -- arrest you go make sure they're not partisan organization.
And so I think what what it seems like so far to me is that somebody whether or Washington or Cincinnati or wherever you BI arrests.
Got in their head OK well here's how we're -- -- figure out whose partisan.
It does it say Tea Party let's give -- -- Jack -- should Ann Liguori I don't -- that we agree on all those details but who who came up with this idea it's got it has to generate all of a sudden we -- to -- negative figure out what.
Let let me say one thing which is.
If what we find out in the end is that they applied the scrutiny to the Tea Party.
And to a whole bunch of other groups that I think that situations very different than if the fire -- itself was being partisan at the I -- Turns out to be partisans.
I think that's a huge problem and yeah.
He should be trying to an -- and then let let me click here to take back the president's version of accountability let's point this out figured out there are.
There are no liberal groups that -- -- -- know -- little -- of the day if you know of one liberal group that was targeted go ahead go to my Twitter account at air Boeing let me know I'll bring it but I have heard about -- zero liberal on the job and lead groups.
The only groups that loss -- there are tax exempt status.
Actually we're liberal groups these progress whatever -- those are the only ones that it.
Had it taken away and is open loss to the next you're gonna play two different issues they are targeting got a bit conservative groups to allow them to get to attacks against exempt status where they weren't doing -- the liberal groups west like Jonathan quickly please.
Yeah I mean -- I think to some extent -- right in the sense that we've given government this power but instead of in -- in that power enlarging the power by making the IRS and and government even bigger and more powerful it's time to cut it I mean a flat tax is not even -- in the congress these days Austin your point about the problem is the congress -- -- -- An initial -- step for the tax system that would work not just for those in the IRS but for all America aren't enough to leave their lord Acton power corrupts absolute power corrupts absolutely.
