Well growing number of lawmakers are now rejecting president Obama's defense of the NSA's controversial surveillance program.
Here's what the president had to say about this on Friday.
They're not secret in the sense that.
-- when it comes telephone calls every member of congress has been briefed on this program.
With a respect all these programs.
The relevant Intelligence Committees.
Are fully briefed on these programs.
So how about that several lawmakers on both sides of the aisle saying that the statement is simply not true.
Here's democratic congressman Keith Ellison.
We were never told that we were able to find out the information it's been revealed this week so I think it's a fiction.
It's a fiction that everybody in congress knows.
California Republican Kevin McCarthy is house majority whip.
And he joins me Nasr welcome good to have you here -- fasteners -- so you know what the president saying as far as the telephone calls parts of this goes.
-- data -- -- we've heard about everybody in congress has briefed on that we brief time that.
Know that that's why congress has requested -- tomorrow today we're gonna have staff that you did not know.
About the larger data mining.
Not tonight as it would -- -- -- now now.
And and I I would we have our Intel committee that gets brief but the full congress does not and that's why we have requested.
To be brief tomorrow we're gonna have a number of individuals coming down from NSA.
Attorney general's office FBI to walk through the entire congress members what is going on if there's a role for congress here.
That we need to have these checks and balances we wanna protect our civil liberties we wanna protect our nation from -- terrorist attack.
But there's a fine line here that we need to have greater accountability and greater transparency and I think there's going to be a lot of questions asked.
Of where we go forward and how we move forward.
T think there government should be doing that's.
I have a real problem with this -- I wanna have a lot of questions answered but I have a real concern.
From a protection of civil liberties just from myself personally.
I know we're just coming off the Boston bombing I want to protect our -- same time so where -- that fine line.
I think transparency and accountability can get -- to that point.
But the more that I hear about this I think there's got to be a greater trust here and the only way you build a trust is to have that transparency and accountability.
You look at -- -- in this 29 year old self for a fast.
Whistle blower leak are.
That's one of the big questions which one is -- do you see him.
As a whistle blower that he says I think the American people deserve to know that their government is collecting all of this information.
Or is -- a leak Perez Mike Rogers your colleague says who needs to be prosecuted and we we have heard that the White House is beginning that process now I prosecute.
If -- whistle blower.
You don't leave the United States you don't go to a Communist country.
If you if you have grave concern -- -- the questions came out I have great concerns that come before congress.
-- a whistle blower is putting information out not running from the country.
And I got real concerns one.
Of what he did did he put America in any jeopardy from our Intel gathering but more importantly don't leave our country.
If you have concerns -- the greatness about our country we can correct we're not afraid and a true whistle -- why didn't just come before congress he could came before me but the information.
You know what -- -- -- visit that we've been looking at -- it if this program worked.
It it should have caught these guys in Boston if you're tracking.
Information you know they've got YouTube you've got text messages you've got cell phone calls.
It sounds to me like it was precisely designed to catch somebody like these -- so it's an embarrassment at you could say.
That they were not able to get -- when they're doing this extraordinary amount of data mining isn't exactly the kind of instance that it was designed to prevent.
That's what we're trying to prevent but also remember we'll put the safeguards in for civil liberty that you'd have to go before the court.
To be able to get that so.
Are those protections are we having enough protections in there.
-- -- -- it according to court and take Russia told us about this -- we're a little bit concerned we're tracking their Internet activity I think let's course was -- Absolutely it you know if if Russia has alerted our country that they might be a security threat this is absolutely -- kind of thing that we want to be doing here.
But see those are the questions we have to ask we don't know of who wins that we don't know.
If the safeguard checked before -- we don't know if it's all there but this is exactly what we're trying to protect we're trying to protect our nation from -- -- of another terrorist attack.
But at the same time protect our civil liberties that we don't have government watching all your phone calls.
Carson Kevin McCarthy thank you.
