Is that voters decide in a special election Tuesday who will fill John Kerry's Senate -- and -- -- getting a lot of advice from national figures.
Democratic congressman Ed Markey with 37 years in the house is running against Gabriel -- now as a Republican businessman and former navy seal.
And a political newcomer.
And Gomez pull off the same kind of upset and heavily democratic state.
That's Scott Brown did and a special election in 2010.
And Gabriel Gomez joins us now from Boston.
Congressman -- declined our invitation mr.
According to the latest real clear politics average of recent polls in Massachusetts you're running well behind congressman Markey.
He is at.
Almost 52% you're 39%.
A margin of twelve and -- -- points.
There's a new poll out today that shows you trailing by eight points but whatever the margin it is a big deficit deficit how do you turn that around in 48 hours.
How -- we -- -- when Chris I'm confident.
Our message is resonating among independents Democrats Republicans.
His -- is a very narrow it's a very narrow sliver of the the Democratic Party.
We're getting people to have a reason to vote for me in parts of marquis has pipe -- the most misleading.
Egregious campaign try to pay somebody that I'm not and you try to scare people because they think he's scared.
And he doesn't want to talk about his record and in the end people are gonna come to the polls because they're going to use yes they're voting for me as opposed to voting against somebody else.
But why at this point in the polls is he leading by somewhere between eight and twelve points.
Yeah he's pulled -- up and down all over the place Chris bottom line is this party -- -- this election's about putting people before politics.
And talk to mark is that 37 years down there to get things done in terms immigration reform.
Conference -- tax reform entitlement reform and is asking in the special election -- -- seventeen months and I will keep my word.
I don't need 37 years like congressman -- is that and that's the message resonating over the last week here and that's -- I'm confident on on June 25 in two days.
I'm asking people to vote for me ever going to be we'll be successful on -- -- well.
You have just crystallized do you figure your main argument I wanna ask you about it that's would you say that marquis has been in congress.
-- for 37 years you say he's been in effect -- the obviously debates that and you say give you seventeen months looks at the amount of time left and John Kerry's term.
And you'll get big things done but you would be if your elected just one of 100 members of the US senate how are you gonna break the gridlock.
Chris if if the navy seal can talk a peace corps volunteer.
In a married man I think got to work with anybody.
I look forward to working with President Obama -- look forward to working with senator Warren -- part of working with all the senators and the congressmen down in DC.
I've been bipartisan my whole life and that's the problem we have done in DC right now we have such a high level of cynicism fiscal mismanagement and hyper partisanship.
And the issues are so big right now that we need to go down there reach across the -- respect the other side -- get things done.
And that's why -- our message is resonating among not just Republicans but independents and Democrats.
And it's a clear choice between -- Carson -- he's at 37 years to prove that he can do this.
He's not succeeded in that mission a mission focused I'll succeed this -- if you talk about hyper partisanship marking his main argument against you is that if you win your just gonna be another vote for the Republicans in the senate take a look.
They want and need him in Washington.
In order to advance -- radical Republican agenda.
In a liberal state where the GOP agenda today is not all that popular where do you differ from most senate Republicans.
-- -- -- wishes he was -- against somebody else but the reality is he's running against me.
I disagree with the Republican Party number of issues.
I believe -- gay marriage.
I'm for the immigration reform bill.
I also think that we need to have more you know -- -- Republican I believe that there's global warming.
And that humans and has something to do with that I also firmly believed -- -- to have its expanded background check -- to me mention bill.
I'm -- that only four Republicans voted for this bill.
And I think the NRA is completely wrong on this bill.
The flooding areas that I don't agree with the Republican Party on any game Carson -- which -- you trying to get somebody else other than me.
Well you -- say that your for the expanded background check and in fact one of the US is perhaps the issue that marquis has hit you -- on.
Is gun control take a look.
An assault weapon ban.
My opponent opposes a ban on the high capacity magazines that attached to those assault weapons that turn them into weapons of walk.
So that's his point yes you may be for the X and expanded background -- -- -- against the assault weapons ban the magazine high capacity magazine.
Down and according to the polls most Massachusetts voters disagree with you on -- -- this is like an example of constant -- not knowing how to solve the problem in order to solve the problem we need to ban all weapons from the wrong people.
And that's was gonna make our communities our schools and our kids safer in argue that we need to pass expanded background check and -- for mental health.
And anyone of -- didn't go down there and actually get more Republicans and conservative Democrats to vote for this -- we go from 54 to at least sixty is -- He's never had a history of -- across the -- I can go down there with experiences and eighty steal the credibility to go down there and get more Republicans and conservative Democrats to pass this bill.
If that's how we're gonna get our communities our schools and our kids safer that's the probably need to solve it back one.
John Kerry left the senate in January you wrote a letter to the democratic governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick in which.
You asked him to appoint you to the senate on an interim basis.
And on gun control and immigration reform you wrote this I support the positions.
That President Obama has taken on these issues and you can be assured I will keep my word and work on these issues as I have promised that question mr.
How could you promise that when you opposed the ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines that President Obama was very much pushing it back up.
Certainly -- that letter I was raised my hand a Canadian guy that in my whole career I wanna go down their volunteer and serve the people in Massachusetts.
And I am for the immigration reform bill I want to make that group of bright -- a group -- -- on making -- -- -- nine and I -- center warned -- -- in a city gang of ten.
And on the background on the -- gun control.
I know the palm then we need to solve is make sure that we ban all weapons from the wrong people and that's of the three mentioned bill does I wanna go down -- make sure we -- that when it comes back up Freya.
For a vote -- later this year.
But but I I do have to -- at the time that you wrote that letter President Obama was as long before that to -- -- Was very much supporting the idea of -- ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
You wrote and you promised you -- heard.
Governor Patrick that you supported president Obama's positions on those -- was that true then and you've changed your mind.
Or wasn't that they'll.
But when -- -- in that letter was I support his overall position on getting conference immigration reform done and gun control -- gun control solving the problem is making sure we ban all weapons from the wrong people and that's of the do we mention bill does.
I -- that I'm Shane -- for Republicans voted for bill -- wanna go down and make sure.
There we get more Republicans in more -- Democrats that's what I'm and I want to make sure we solve these problems and get the right solution down there as opposed to not solve the problem.
According to one recent -- you're unfavorable.
Rating in the state of Massachusetts is 33% which isn't bad spot.
Have a favorable opinion of -- and I guess my question is.
As a successful businessman as a former navy CL as a Hispanic why have you had such a tough time.
Making the affirmative case for Gabriel -- I think he's bold move up and down Chris and I know that when we go out there and we need the people we get our message out there people are very enthusiastic and they're not just Republicans or independents they're Democrats.
And that's why on Tuesday June 25 right humbly ask people to come vote for me.
They're gonna come out there -- they gonna show that -- a there's a reason to vote for someone as opposed against somebody.
And I'm confident that our message is getting out there -- -- these polls move up and down but I know we're gonna win on June 25 because we're giving the people a reason to put the people before party politics.
And I Disney seventeen years -- months ago down there and do the job for the people that they want us to get done.
It's been suggested that if you lose on Tuesday that it might not be all bad for you that you would have gained tremendous name recognition.
This is your first race you'll have gained a lot of experience and campaigning and debating and all of that.
And that would be well placed to run again question win or lose will you be running again for office in Massachusetts.
I'm confident Renner went Chris but -- the famous general once that back and lower -- I shall return.
And I know a lot of people are very sight of our candidacy and more more people can continue coming your candidacy and helping out -- want to go to www.
Gomez FO RMA dot com.
I'm content between now and Tuesday.
We're gonna close the gap -- we're gonna be successful on on the 25.
Well as you say I shall return assuming it does for the sake of argument that you -- -- some people as I am.
You'd run again in the in the full election not the -- election in 2014.
Against Ed Markey who would then have a record.
In the -- up a lot of the next seventeen months is not make sense to you.
It is somehow Carson marquis does -- that is gonna change is gonna be the exact status quo going this -- change he's gonna go from one building across -- the next builders looking at the cynicism the fiscal mismanagement and hyper partisanship I can't imagine what congressman Markey we deal with seventeen months.
But he hasn't done in 37 years so nothing's gonna change.
So I'm confident that because of that and I only need -- -- to prove myself -- people are gonna come to our side on on Tuesday two days.
Just -- as you've learned a lot months is a -- thank you I mean even getting on the web site well done sir thank you thanks for joining us it will be watching the results Tuesday night.
Thank you sir I appreciate it.
