Your reaction now from a key democratic senator from a major coal producing state.
West Virginia's Joseph Manchin joins me tonight from Capitol Hill senator thanks for joining us thanks for having -- Your reaction first of all -- the president's speech in these new regulations.
It's just so we -- responsible you know we're looking for an -- -- energy policy that basically secures our nation makes it's less dependent.
On foreign oil or foreign energy and we can do that believe that he's everything we have an imbalance with the environment and economy that's always -- said you know if you look at this in the big picture -- Eight billion tons of calls being burned in the world and we talk about the environment -- climate.
And if you little bit about geography in the world you know -- the globe is where his round and an end and the climate is all around.
If they believe that we stop burning coal in America completely Nexus One billion tons a year 18 for the consumption of the world.
That we're gonna clean up the environment they believe the world still -- that's what we're dealing with -- and and really it is going to be a killer of jobs but bottom line.
The EIA which is part of the -- you department for this president and this administration basically says they're depending upon coal.
Well up until 204035.
Why do you wanna shoot yourself in both feet and then try to run a marathon -- Yes -- what about specifically what does it do.
To the economy in your stayed -- other coal producing states.
If all of this is rolled out its fairly in fairly short order.
Well it's devastating not just to the state of West Virginia all the coal states -- basically to the economy the United States of America.
That's what we should be going with someone -- a war why don't we have a war on -- economy sluggish economy.
A war on good job growth how -- we get things moving again a war on competitiveness.
-- -- compete with the world in the global market.
That's what we should be declaring war on to get people back to work they know they're declaring war truly.
On jobs on on American jobs basically I think people -- a prayer every night for coal miner they gave you the life you have.
You know we've answered the call every time and will continue to.
And we're just asking for a balance your level playing field.
You know we often as we debate these things in Washington.
Forget the people involved I talked to a number of coal miners in that industry in West Virginia -- last year just take a quick listen to this.
They'll bring separation from the fight -- communities -- you know.
However what a lot of people and -- within the community the top of the whole industry.
There's lot of generations live in these communities and where your mom -- dad lived here your grandparents live in your aunts and uncles.
All of may be in the their former coal mining business.
-- -- -- -- -- -- The people have believed to have found what do you feel like you're completely under attack.
Where were -- for the right to work -- whereas we're not asking Brinkley was very handouts.
Not as great concessions -- whereas before as -- opportunity to work pay taxes provides electricity and provide for facts.
Now senator the president said today that you know this is -- change for the country and you have to move.
And they have to get off these fuels that cause so much problem for the environment and you listen to those folks and what do you -- is he gonna get.
The other people in the world with seven billion people who are using seven billion tons of coal that we're not using causing him to change them.
How about our trading partners want to get involved there.
You wanna clean up environment once you have -- use that technology we're using today.
None of this makes sense whatsoever they're asking us to meet standards.
This unattainable because this hasn't been the you know the the design -- all that has not been perfected the technology.
And we're supposed to meet you hit it hit a moving target.
Read all I have said.
We have coal plants today and we have utility companies that would retrofit.
If they were allowed to but they have to go to the standard just don't even attainable and today's market and technology she knew what they do they stay right where they are they do nothing.
Senator -- ask you two more quick things one is the president said today and and many people supportive especially environmentalists on the left.
That the twelve warmest years in recorded history have come.
In the last fifteen years and he went into a litany of problems from climate change down the road according two to his advisors and and many scientists he said 97% of scientists.
Are you concerned about climate change.
Sure why we should be should concerned about climate change seven billion people in the world we've all added to that but when you put it on just one on the back of one industry.
No one has brought you the greatest living in the greatest lifestyle in the world as far as the industrial world defeating and and defending this every time we go to war.
The coal industry's been the backbone of America.
With that being said we have cleaned up the environment more the last two decades -- period he's talking about than ever before and.
Quickly senator before I let -- guard be remiss if I didn't ask you about the gun legislation.
And where it stands and will you have another vote before the end of this.
I hope so we're talking and working -- this is common sense this is not gun control it's basically common sense background check.
Funny thing I've said -- If -- law abiding gun owner we're not gonna sell -- -- to a stranger or to someone who's mentally insane war to a family member who's not there are worthy effort.
We're not going to do that it makes sense that a commercial transaction.
We want to know we're not infringing unifil just look at the deal.
And a gun owners like myself.
We've given more rights and we've expanded the rights of the second in the more than ever before this is a balanced bill that works well but it makes sense it's something we should do.
90% and in my state of West Virginia 75%.
He's your gun homes and households 75%.
Agreed this makes sense so is -- going to come to a vote.
Hopes of I'm -- -- for -- senator thank you thank you appreciate.
