-- -- -- a bombshell medical study out today raising serious red flags about fish oil supplements millions of Americans take Omega three for heart health.
And other benefits of the new research shows it in some cases it could raise man's risk of prostate cancer more than 70%.
Doctor Mark Siegel our Fox News medical correspondent.
And a professor of medicine and -- use slang -- medical center joins me now doctor thanks for being here for -- here this is a stunning study seven a 71%.
Increase in the risk of the aggressive.
Prostate cancer the most deadly strain what do you make.
This means that this is the first time that a study has shown a correlation between Omega three fatty acids and low grade prostate cancer the 71%.
-- that's the third study that that's shown that.
Aggressive prostate care to the first starting.
A 40% increase of just below -- -- we're starting to see more and more of an association.
Between Omega three fatty acids and prostate cancer know this isn't just the supplement it's also a lot of fish.
The study author -- crystal told me today that he's estimating by the amount of Omega threes that he found here.
That if you have more than three -- four portions of fish a week.
Or you have these supplements more than every third day we're talking every third day if you took one -- supplement once twice a week.
You're increasing your risk so that's pretty dramatic and I think eating fish is great and I've said that many times on the air here because you're eating fish instead of -- that may be terrible for you but do you need these supplements.
We're seeing more and more evidence you might not need them we have some evidence that they've decreased risk of depression that they improved -- dementia or thinking in the elderly.
But there was a study last year that showed that the supplements may not help.
The hard as much as we thought they -- so we're starting to study are supplements more and more productive crystal told me -- that there's now a huge study coming out.
When they're gonna do what's called a randomized trial -- this is what we really need.
To prove once and for all if his approved fear that Omega three fatty acids may actually be bad for you.
But explained how this makes sense because at the height on Omega three fatty acids in fish oil is that it cuts down on inflammation and we now believe that there is a connection.
Between inflammation and illness including cancer so the costs are inflammation why is it going to cause cancer.
It's a great question and I think we all know that inflammation is associated with cancer.
But it gets a little more complicated because Omega -- also decreased immune function and they also cause other.
Molecules that actually break up DNA so they may be a specific way they affect the prostate -- and this -- -- -- larger lesson here before you go out there we believe in the hype because there's a billion dollar industry here.
Before somebody -- you this is great for you.
Ask your physician.
Because maybe it's good for some people maybe not others what about people that are already at risk for prostate cancer.
We have to be discerning about these things and that's what I don't like about supplements to begin with did -- -- your vote have a well balanced diet.
Told me to take fish oil supplements every day because it cuts down on irritation and inflammation.
Of the -- does this study hold any truth for women.
The study has nothing to do with women the only -- that does is the issue of heart disease we've always thought that Omega three supplements protect the heart.
But we're starting to think differently about that you know if if there is some protection with the which I have heard also that may be worth taking but again that puts you -- one specific group.
This is a warning for the men out there today.
And it's also a warning for people who just think let's take a bunch of supplements it's going to help me it's gonna put me in good health.
It may or may not you should know what you're taking in everything should be gone over with -- So the -- shot today is if you are NN.
You are supposed to no longer take your fish oil supplements I think if you're a man you should continue to eat salmon and other fish that's really good for you -- -- -- might wanna watch others have already told pregnant women watch -- be on to the proportions a week.
Fish oil supplements I would advise men who -- at risk for prostate cancer to watch out today.
And to think twice about because this is the third study that showing a correlation it is not -- proof.
But it's a growing association than I'm concerned about great information opposite -- thanks so much for -- reconsider -- --
